The Termite Times Issue #0018 December 2017 Next Meeting December 21 st PRESIDENTS MESSAGE How A house in my neighborhood just went up for sale. Just two houses down from me! It has four bedrooms, three baths, spa, pool and a large brick barbecue in the back yard. A winning lottery ticket would be helpful since the asking price is north of $500K. Now are you wondering why I’m talking about a house for sale? Is Tom anxious to see that neighbor move out of the neighborhood? No! Is he now a novice real estate agent? No again! There is one little (well not exactly little) item I neglected to mention. About three years ago, the owner poured a concrete slab at the edge of the property and put up a high steel building with a footprint three times the size of my workshop. And it’s air conditioned! What a Christmas present that would be. Any of you woodworkers care to be my new neighbor? How are ‘you all’ coming with your wooden ‘ladies’ gift for the Christmas party drawing? I got inspired on Saturday and had it finished by Sunday. No, I’m not telling what it is.. you must wait till the party. It sure feels good to have it finished. Now if I could only finish my state fair entry. It has at least five items on it that are a challenge for me. If I run short of time I’ve been known to take short cuts. As an example: doing finger joints instead of dovetails. It’s good to challenge yourself… it improves your woodworking, or anything else you apply it to. DO NOT FORGET the party is at the Golden Corral 6942 West Hillsborough Ave. at 5:30. Please hold off of getting in the food lines until we salute the flag and have our invocation. In other words go directly to our assigned party room upon entering. OLD BUSINESS

Details for the Christmas party were confirmed. We will have our December meeting at the Golden Corral on Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa on December 21st (regular meeting night). We have a separate room reserved. The auction and gift exchange will be held after the meal. The reservation is for 5:30 PM. Pay for your meal when you come in.

NEW BUSINESS

The State Fair and Tool Show sign-up sheets were passed around.

The Tool Show dates are different this year. It will be held February 26th through February 28th. Volunteers are needed to load the wood for the logging mill at Gene Petys’ place. Need to be there by 7:00 AM on the 26th.

A committee is needed to explore the possibility of using the existing building on the church property for club meetings and equipment usage/storage. The following members volunteered.

Gene Petys

Bill Powell

Pietro Monereda

The Incra fence was left over from the tool auction. We may want to reserve it for use on our equipment, if the church building/shop project works out.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Toy Committee – James Nauman announced that there were 626 toys made this year, which is significantly lower than years past. James is also stepping down as lead for the Toy Committee, so we need a volunteer to take on this role.

State Fair Committee – The fair dates are February 8th through February 17th. If you sign up to man the woodworking booth, you will receive two entry tickets for each day. The shift is four hours and you will be answering questions from fair goers and promoting woodworking to the general public. There will be a book at the booth that gives information about the entries and the prices for those that are available for sale.

Urn Project – Bill Rizi reported that The Villages plans on engraving 500 emblems for each branch of service. These emblems will be attached to the urns as needed.

We need to standardize the urn dimensions for those states that have more stringent controls.

A laser engraving machine was donated to the club by a veteran’s widow who had listed it on Craig’s List.

DEMONSTRATION

Mike Breedlove joined us again to share some of the many different types of wood available and to test our wits in naming different wood examples,

We were all given a numbered sheet and around 60 wood samples. The goal was to identify as many species of wood as we could. The highest scores would win a prize.

Mike then began his presentation with a bit of explanation. The term used for the scientific naming of all living things is called taxonomy. There is currently a project being run around the world to create a single database of all known species of wood. Currently, the database holds about 60,000 different species and approximately 200 new species are discovered each year! Approximately 60% of the known species of are native to only one country. The major countries holding the most indigenous species are Brazil, Columbia and Indonesia.

Wood is unique in that all wood we us use is dead, but yet it is still alive. The best part of the wood (sapwood or heartwood) varies, depending on the “anatomy” of the particular species. What is wood? In a 1X1X1 “ cube of wood there are about 5 million cells. These elongated cells expand and contract which gives wood it’s designation as a living thing, even though it has been cut down. These cells are what cause the swelling and shrinkage we see in woodworking. Wood cells shrink and expand across the depth and width of any given piece.

The common pine species are native to North America only and in the years between 1902 and 1912, each logging town in the United States felled approximately 5 billion board feet of pine. The trees averaged 150 feet in length and 3 feet in diameter.

Another interesting facet of wood “naming” is that sometimes woods from other countries are given exotic and unusual names to make them more appealing to the American market.

Chuck VanKleek (African Bloodwood), Pietro Monereda and John Snyder (Santos Mahogany) guessed the most correct species. They were given samples of some very exotic and hard-to-find woods.
