Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral, If you happen to be reading this after Mass this Sunday, one of the things that you probably noticed immediately, is that some of the Mass parts (namely the ‘Holy, Holy,’ the Mystery of Faith, and the ‘Lamb of God’) were sung/recited in Latin. For some, this might have been a nostalgic trip back to how Mass was celebrated in their childhood, others may not have even noticed the change (hopefully this was not the case), and for still others, it might have been a source of confusion (after all, didn’t Vatican II get rid of Latin all together). Because of the possibility of greatly varied responses, I want to take a moment to briefly address why we will be singing/reciting some of the Mass parts in Latin during Advent. First of all, it represents the desire of the Church. It is not about a conservative or liberal agenda, but about what the Church has asked us to do. Because the most common objection to using Latin in the Liturgy is that Vatican II did away with it, I am going to quote from the document on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council: “The use of the Latin language, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 36). Furthermore, the council decreed that “a suitable place may be allotted to the vernacular in Masses which are celebrated with the people… nevertheless, care must be taken to ensure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 54). To try to do all of the people’s Mass parts at once, would be overwhelming; so we are only going to do a few of them (and the easier ones to learn). We will make use of these Latin Mass parts for the entirety of Advent, but then will return to English at Christmastime. The goal is not to switch to Latin, but to ensure that the call of the Second Vatican Council is realized, namely, that we are able, if need be, to sing/recite the principal Mass parts in Latin. Second, the ability to recite the principle Mass parts in Latin serves the unity of the Church. It allows for the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ to pray with one voice when she gathers together from disparate parts of the world. It was surely the hope of Vatican II, that when we gather for Mass with Catholics from other nations, who speak other languages, that we be able to pray with one voice around the altar, as we celebrate the sacrifice that unites us all in Christ. There is something intangible, yet deeply profound, about standing next to someone with whom I may not be able to communicate in any other way, but when it comes to that which really matters – what I believe – we can stand side by side and proclaim together the praise of the one true God. In that moment, at the high point of the Church’s most sacred activity, I not only know what my brother or sister is saying, but am also united with them in professing it. So let us respond to the call of the Second Vatican Council and immerse ourselves in the prayer of the Church that endured sixteen centuries (Latin was the exclusive language of prayer from the 4th century until the 20th in the Western Church). And be patient, it will probably take a while, but if we strive to use the bulletin and participate, it will sink in, and before long, you’ll be able to switch between Latin and English at Mass as if you were born in ancient Rome.

Retirement Fund for Religious - Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests offer their lives in service to others: educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed.

Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Please give generously to this collection next weekend, December 8/9.

Holy Hour of Reparation - We may wonder what we can do to help establish justice, bring healing, and purge corruption from the Church. One thing that we can do, is to pray for the Church, and all those affected. To that end, on the first Monday of each month, the Cathedral will have a Holy Hour of Reparation and Healing following the 5:10 pm Mass, from approximately 5:45-6:45 pm on December 3rd. It will provide an opportunity for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and conclude with prayers of reparation.

Household Recycling can be easy when you know how. Thinking carefully about what products you buy at the supermarket and how to recycle them is the first step towards efficient recycling. Ideasto consider:•Buy products that can be recycled. When

shopping, choose products that can be recycled easily such as glass jars & tin cans.

•Buy products that have been made from recycled material.

•Find ways of recycling different materials: items like furniture, electronic equipment, building material, and vehicles.

•Avoiding buying hazardous material. It is difficult to recycle. Try to find saferalternatives to household cleaners and buy non-toxic products whenever possible.

•Keep all recyclables clean. Wash away any food or liquid residue in glass jars, plastic bottles, food cans, beverage bottles, and glass bottles.

•If it squashes – squash it! This helps you get more into your recycle bin.

Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home & keep it in an obvious place. Please recycle! For more ideas visit: <saintjohncathedral.com/recycle>.

There is a yearning in hearts that in the darkness hide and in the shades of death abide, a yearning for tomorrow. There is a yearning, a yearning for the promised One, the Firstborn of creation. There is a yearning for the Lord who visited His own, and by His death for sin atoned, to bring to us salvation. Emmanuel, Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning. There is a yearning that fills the hearts of those who wait the day of His appearing. There is a yearning when all our sorrows are erased and we shall see the One who placed within our hearts the yearning. Emmanuel, Emmanuel, within our hearts, the yearning. Who But the Lord? Craig Courtney O come, Thou bright and morning star and bring us comfort from afar. Dispel the shadows of the night and turn our darkness into light. Who but the Lord can give the shadows light, can break into the dark, draw morning from the night? Who but the Lord will hear our cry and answer, “Here am I”? Who but the Lord makes blinded eyes to see, brings music to the deaf, sets the lonely captive free? Who but the Lord will by His glory show the paths of peace? Who but the Lord? O shine on us the brightness of Your face, to earth’s remotest end, every people, every race. O shine on us until to each is shown Your saving grace. O shine on us, O shine. Who but the Lord can give the shadows light? None but the Lord.

Homily

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior, and for you I wait all the day. Good and upright is the Lord; thus he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction.

Blessed indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the path with sinners, nor abides in the company of scorners, but whose delight is the law of the Lord, and who ponders his law day and night. He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper. Not so are the wicked, not so! For they, like winnowed chaff, shall be driven away by the wind; for the Lord knows the way of the just, but the way of the wicked will perish.

I will hear what the Lord proclaims; peace and salvation at hand, always near to those who fear him; glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet at last; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven above.

God will grant abundant grace; earth will spring up with boundless life. Justice flows ever before him to prepare his way.

Choir: The Lord will grant abundance Charles ThatcherThe Lord will grant abundance, and our land will yield its fruit.I will listen for the word of God; surely the Lord will proclaim peace to his people, to the faithful, to those who trust in him.Near indeed is salvation for the loyal; prosperity will fill our land.Love and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss. [Psalm 85:13 – Communion, Advent 1]

Family Perspectives on the Gospel -At this time of the year, we become more conscious of our family as we make preparations for cards, gifts, and visits. Today’s Gospel warns us not to get “weighted down” by activity. “Take heed to yourselves” during this Advent and devote yourself to appreciating the gift of those who are already an important part of your life. The greatest gift this season might be the true appreciation of Christ in others.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women’s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men’s group on Fridays. Just show up attheLowerSacristy, orcontacttheparishofficewithinquiries.

Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy.

Catholic Radio - Tune in to AM 1260 The Rock! Cleveland’s Catholic radio station offers a variety of reflections and catechesis. Did you know, “Dare Great Things” with Fr. Nathan Cromly of Eagle Eye Ministries is now aired on AM 1260 The Rock? Tune in on Mondays, at 10:30 pm, and accept the call to be great for Christ. For a full program schedule visit <am1260therock.com>, where you can also listen live.

Key Card System - The process of upgrading most doors to a key-card access system, and re-keying remaining locks should be complete this week. The lavatory doors will be open or locked automatically based on when Confession and Mass are scheduled. If you believe that you are in need of access to the building in relation to your ministry, please contact the parish office at <[email protected]> or 216-771-6666, so that an access card can be issued. Thank you.

Intentions of the Holy Father

December – In the Service of Transmission of Faith: That people, who are involved in the service and transmission of faith, may find, in their dialogue with culture, a language suited to the conditions of the present time.

S S S S STheology on the Rocks presents Dr. Ken DeLuca, Psychologist, and Deacon at St. Julie Billiart Parish, North Ridgeville with “Holiday Stress: Unravel the tangled family relationships & holiday season stress.” Theology on the Rocks will be Monday, December 10, 2018, 7:00 pm, at the Copper Cup at the Ironwood Café, 680 Dover Center Road, Westlake. Cost is $10, paid at the door, which includes appetizers. There is a cash bar. Register at: <theologyontherocks.wixsite.com/west> For questions, email <[email protected]>.

Charitable Giving Ideas - Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information, and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish. Questions? Contact our parish office at 216-771-6666. You are also welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x4070 or via email at <[email protected]>.
