Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral, We have a unique happening here at the Cathedral this Sunday and Monday – the relics of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina (or as he is more commonly known – Saint Padre Pio) will be here for veneration. If you thought that mystical phenomenon associated with holy men and women was something relegated to the past, to great figures found in the Scriptures, then you haven’t met this Tuesday’s Saint. Born in a small Italian village in 1887, to poor peasant farmers, he was named Francesco in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. It became evident from a very young age that he had a deep love for God and felt, from his childhood, a call to the priesthood. He told his parents at age 10 – “I want to be a friar – with a beard.” At the age of 16, he entered the Capuchin Order, and later received the religious habit in 1902, taking for himself the name ‘Pio’ (a modernization of the name ‘Pius’). After a number of years of study, he was ordained a priest in 1910 and officially became known as Padre Pio. On September 20th, 1918, while he was praying before a large crucifix making his thanksgiving after Mass, he had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended Padre Pio had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. The stigmata is a very unique and particular way of sharing in the Lord’s passion. It involves an individual of extraordinary holiness whom the Lord has chosen to bear the wounds of his crucifixion in his or her body. There are only a handful of such individuals in the history of the Church, among them are Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine of Sienna. The stigmata is more than mere aesthetics, but involves a true participation in the Lord’s passion – meaning – the wounds are painful and will often bleed. In Padre Pio’s case, the blood which seeped from the wounds had the fragrance of flowers. After examining him, doctors could offer no explanation for the wounds, and as he himself predicted, upon his death, the wounds were healed and not even so much as a scar remained. The Stigmata was not the only mystical phenomenon associated with Padre Pio. He had the gift of bi-location (he could be two places at the same time) and could also read souls, meaning that when people came to him for confession, he knew details of their lives that they had not revealed to him. Saint Pio was also a man of intense prayer and one to whom others streamed with their intentions and spiritual needs. He would spend up to ten hours a day in the confessional (he saw the confessional as a great means to draw sinners to Christ, and holy people to even greater sanctity). Busloads of people used to come and see him, seeking his spiritual counsel. In fact, the late Holy Father, Saint John Paul II, while he was still Archbishop of Krakow, wrote to Padre Pio asking him to pray for a woman he knew with throat cancer. Within two weeks, she was cured of her life threatening condition. Padre Pio died in 1968 and was canonized in 2002. 300,000 people were present at his canonization, where Pope Saint John Paul II described him as a humble friar whose life was characterized by suffering and deep love of God. He saw Jesus in the sick and the suffering and poured himself out to care for their souls. During his homily, John Paul II said: “The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves in to a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to God.” How well do we deal with the difficulties and struggles in our own lives? Do we see them as a share in the Lord’s own passion, which if offered up, redound to our merit, and bring us to participate in the work of redemption.

The Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday of Lent at 4:30 pm.

Cathedral Parish MissionMarch 11 & 18, at 4:00 pm

In recent years, Christianity, and especially the Catholic faith, have become subject to increasing criticism, ridicule, and rejection by the popular culture of our country. A large percentage of Millennials seem uninterested in the organized Church of their family heritage as they easily embrace the cultural views and virtues promoted in the media. In the face of these pressures, how can faithful Catholics remain faithful? Join us for two evenings of reflection as we look at some of the more practical and creative ways several authors offer, putting together a mosaic of ideas that, hopefully, can help sustain us spiritually in our increasing secular culture. The sessions will be by Rev. Gerard Gonda O.S.B., on Sunday, March 11, & Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm.

Operation Rice Bowl funds poverty and hunger alleviation programs, both locally and internationally. Pick up a “Rice Bowl” in the church. Details on page 4.

Remembering the Dead! - It is an unbroken tradition of the Christian faithful to pray for the dead. The intention of the Mass is a customary form of this prayer and remembrance. The typical offering requested to obtain the intention of a particular Mass is $10 in the Diocese of Cleveland. Masses are currently available at the Cathedral as soon as the second week of March. To schedule a Mass, just stop by the Rectory Office.

Veneration of the Relics will take placeSunday, March 4, 2018 Monday, March 5, 2018from 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm from 6:00 am - 5:00 pmMass at 5:30 pm Masses at 7:15 am, 12:00 Noon (offered for St Pio) and 5:10 pm Parking will be limited on Monday, March 5, due to the workday. For more information visit: <dioceseofcleveland.org/padrepio>.

Volunteers Still Needed - In light of the popularity of this special opportunity, volunteers are being sought to assist the faithful who come to venerate the relics of St. Pio by maintaining an orderly line, answering questions, handing out brochures, and providing basic hospitality. Those who are interested in serving a two-hour shift as a Volunteer may register via Eventbrite at: <tinyurl.com/Pio2018>. Cathedral parishioners & volunteers who do not have internet access may volunteer by calling 216-771-6666.

Living Stations of the Cross - Our parish will host Elyria Catholic High School students for The Living Stations of the Cross, this Sunday, March 4th, following the 5:30 pm Mass. Please join the students for a moving and prayerful experience of walking with those closest to Jesus. All are welcome!

Restore the Church, Build the Future - This weekend, March 3/4, is the Collection for the Churches in Central and Eastern Europe, that have faced many years of hardship. Under communism, organized religion was opposed in favor of atheism, to overthrow the power of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Central and Eastern European countries have been working to rebuild political structures, social welfare, and their economies. The USCCB Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe funds projects in 28 countries to build the pastoral capacity of the Church and to rebuild and restore the faith in these countries. The funds collected in the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe are used to support seminaries, youth ministry, social service programs, pastoral centers, church construction and renovation, and Catholic communications projects.

Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward? Plastic bags and other plastic garbage carelessly allowed to blow away kill as many as 1,000,000 aquatic creatures a year! Yet, these items can be easily recycled into new items. Many grocery stores have bins in which you can place these bags for recycling. Better yet, consider making use of reusable cloth shopping bags available near the checkout aisles of many groceries. For more ideas visit: <saintjohncathedral.com/recycle>.

Human Trafficking is one of the great human rights challenges of this century. Millions of men, women, and children are enslaved and treated as commodities – bought, sold, shared, abused, and discarded. Ending slavery is everyone’s work. CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The law of the Lord is perfect; it revives the soul. The decrees of the Lord are steadfast; they give wisdom to the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right; they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear; it gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, abiding forever. The judgments of the Lord are true; they are, all of them, just. They are more to be desired than gold, than quantities of gold. Sweeter are they than honey, than honey flowing from the comb.

Text: Psalm 84, How lovely is your dwelling place. Music: Michael Joncas; © 1979, OCP Publications, Portland OR 97213. Reprinted with permission: OneLicense A-702555

My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord, My heart and my flesh cry out. Even the sparrow may find a home, the swallow a nest for her young; Your altars, my king and my God.

How happy are they who may dwell in your courts, how happy when you are their strength. Though they might go through the valley of death, they make it a place of springs. Your first rain will bring it to life.

O Lord of Hosts, hear my cry, and hearken, O God of Jacob. One day in your house is worth much more to me than ten thousand anywhere else. The Lord is my sun and my shield.

Choir: God of hosts, might Lord Nahum Tate/John BroderipO God of hosts, the mighty Lord, how lovely is the place where thou, enthroned in glory, show'st the brightness of thy face.My longing soul faints with desire to view thy blest abode; My panting heart and flesh cry out for thee, the living God.The birds, more happy far than I, around thy temple throng; Securely there they build, and there secure hatch their young.O Lord of hosts, my King and God, how highly blest are they who in thy temple always dwell, and there thy praise display.

Blessed are they who are poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God.Bless us, O Lord, make us poor in spirit; Bless us, O Lord, our God.Blessed are they who are meek & humble, they will inherit the earth.Bless us, O Lord, make us meek & humble; Bless us, Lord, our God.Blessed are they who will morn in sorrow, they will be comforted.Bless us, O Lord, when we share their sorrow; Bless us, O Lord, our God.

The Catholic Relief Services Collection, next weekend, March 10/11, is one of the twelve national collections established by the bishops of the United States so that, by combining resources, we can more effectively carry out the global mission of the Church. It offers Catholics a convenient opportunity to help more than 100 million people at home and abroad through a charitable contribution during Mass. The CRS Collection supports six Catholic organizations (Catholic Relief Services; USCCB’s Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development; USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services; Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.; USCCB’s Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church; and the Holy Father’s Relief Fund) that advance the international social ministry of the Catholic Church.

Knights in Action - My brothers in Christ, we are living in very troubling times. There are wars around the world. We find ourselves insecure, with the many negative obstacles to encounter each day. The Knights of Columbus was founded to assist Catholic families, and to serve our

parish, city, community, state, nation, and now many other countries as well. This month, we celebrate Founders Day in honor of Father Michael J. McGivney. His vision began in 1882, and has grown to more than two million strong. Our men and their families work in God’s name, and to his greater glory. Call 216-771-4811 for more information.

Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women’s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men’s group on Fridays. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish office with inquiries.

Intentions of the Holy Father

March: For Evangelization - Formation in Spiritual Discernment - That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels.Family Perspectives on the Gospel - When Jesus drove the merchants out of the temple, he was not angry, he was PASSIONATE! Jesus clearly believed in what He was doing! The Gospel tells us that because of this, “many believed in His Name because they saw the signs that He was showing them.” If we expect our children to learn our values and beliefs, then they must witness our passion for these values. Just like the people in today’s Gospel, our children need to see the signs of what we‘re doing if they are to believe. Children need us to be passionate leaders.

Charitable Giving Ideas for 2018 Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information, and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish. Questions? Contact our parish office at 216-771-6666. You are also welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x4070 or via email at <[email protected]>.
