Gretchen Oberst – Recipient of theWomen Promoting Agriculture AwardLebanon County Woman's Hall of Fame 2019 recipient of the WOMENPROMOTING AGRICULTURE Award – Lebanon County Commission forWoman – GRETCHEN L. OBERST Nominator: Debra Tice

“I believe in the future of agriculture with a faith born not of words but ofdeeds.” E.M. Tiffany

Gretchen Oberst lives the motto of the FFA (Future Farmers of America)daily. She is in her 36th year of teaching Agricultural Education at NorthernLebanon High School and is well-loved by many past and present students.Teaching agriculture has allowed her to take something that she is passion-ate about and use it to inspire and provide her students with the knowledge, information, andconfidence to achieve their goals.

She has always done her best to be a good role model for her students, expecting the same dedicationof them as would herself. Her greatest joy is to see them succeed after graduation. Several years ago,one of her students was even chosen as the National FFA President, the highest office an FFA membercan achieve. Another student, Jennie Maulfair Balmer, has become an Agricultural Education teacherand now teaches alongside Gretchen at Northern Lebanon.

When Gretchen was hired, there were very few females teaching agricultural courses and she met a lotof opposition. She continued to forge ahead and has made the Northern Lebanon FFA and AgriculturalDepartment something of which to be proud. Happily, females now make up more than half of theAg teachers in Pennsylvania. There are only two other females teaching Ag in our state longer thanGretchen.

When she began teaching at Northern Lebanon, there were about 45 students in the program with oneteacher. Now, they have 188 students and two teachers. They have added a large pole barn facility tohouse large animals and rabbits; a new greenhouse, tripling the size of the previous one; a secondclassroom; and a food science lab to educate students about food safety and development.

Gretchen was a finalist in 2008 for PA Teacher of the Year. While this was quite an honor, she appreci-ated being in school and teaching a new class about rabbits, small animals, or floriculture. She hasserved on several committees state-wide representing Agricultural Education. In addition, Gretchen haspresented workshops on integrating Animals into Curriculum and How to Train a ParliamentaryProcedure Team.

One of her favorite activities is working with the Parliamentary Procedure Team. She has had severalteams go to the national contest, held annually at the National FFA Convention. Also, she lovessharing her passion about the FFA with others. The FFA responds to requests to provide a variety ofpresentations to the elementary schools, as well as others in the community. She is even the co-chairof the FFA State Scrapbook Contest. In addition, Gretchen is a member of the Lebanon County FairBoard.

Gretchen carries her love of agriculture to her home life. She lives on a 22-acre farm where she has asmall herd of beef cows, a small flock of breeding sheep, and a few chickens. Yes, she does indeed livethe motto of the FFA daily, and her students and our community reap the benefits of her dedication.

1st Grade Celebrates the 100th Day of SchoolOn February 4th, first grade came together to celebrate the 100th day ofschool! Students arrived to school dressed like they were 100 years-old!The day began with reflecting back on what the students have learnedand accomplished since the beginning of the year. Students were excitedto share all that they’ve done on mobiles that are now displayed in thehallways of the school. Next, students had the opportunity to share their100th Day of School posters they created with their families. First graderswere asked to create a poster using 100 items of their choosing! Studentsgot creative and used objects such as popsicle sticks, dog treats, balloons, and more to create structures and pictures on their posters!

Finally, 1st grade embarked on a mission to save Zero the Hero. Theyreceived their Secret Agent badges and were “scanned” into Spy Head -quarters. From there, students received instructions on how to save Zerothe Hero. The students moved through different case files around theroom and completed tasks that led them to clues about Zero’s last-knownlocation. The case files included writing numbers 1-100 with spy pens, using magnify glasses to count tens/ones, building structures to supportthe weight of 100 pennies, among others! After completing all the casefiles, students reassembled to put their clues together. We discovered hewas last seen “where you run and eat” (the gym!).

Girls on the Run, Is So Much Fun!!!Girls on the Run is a fun, empowering program in its second year of being offered after school for girls in grades3-5 at Fredericksburg Elementary School. This season we are so excited to have many returning girls and ourbiggest team yet! For ten weeks Mrs. Boyer, Mrs. Butz-Tobias, Mrs. Hulse, Mrs. Hillegas, Mrs. Smith, andMs. Routch have volunteered their time to be a coach, and will help guide the young ladies through powerfullyengaging lessons. The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident by using afun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The lessons each week are set up to helpgirls gain confidence in themselves. We will also be doing a community based project where we do somethinggreat for the community. This year, as a team, we chose to help a student here at Fredericksburg who is battlingcancer. At our next Fredericksburg movie night, we’ll have a Girls on the Run bake sale. All proceeds will godirectly to the family to help with medical expenses. The girls truly learn the value of giving with this project. Atthe end of the ten weeks of practices, we will all be participating in a 5K race together at Cumberland Valley HighSchool on Saturday, May 11! Many other Girls on the Run teams from all over the area will be there to join us!

As a team if we can help each girl realize their limitless potential and show her how she is free to pursue herdreams, then we have truly done our job! Girls on the Run is so much more than an exercise program, there aremany core values that will be taught throughout this 10-week program (see below). This is the second year thatwe have been able to offer this program at Fredericksburg, but we were pleasantly surprised with the amount ofreturning AND new interest we have had! We hope this program will be offered here for many years to come!During our first few practices, we have already had many lessons learned, goals met, new friends made, and moreimportantly a lot of smiles and giggles!

Girls on the Run honors its core values. We strive to:• Recognize our power and responsibility to be intentional in our decision making• Embrace our differences and find strength in our connectedness• Express joy, optimism and gratitude through our words, thoughts and actions• Nurture our physical, emotional and spiritual health• Lead with an open heart and assume positive intent• Stand up for ourselves and others

Social Emotional Learning Through Literature Companion ActivitiesSocial and self-awareness are foundational skills of social emotional learning. In developing the emotional sup-port program here at Northern Lebanon, students are working on identifying and demonstrating these skills. Acompanion unit based on “The Bad Seed” by Jory John helps students understand everyone has bad days but itis the good we find in these bad situations. The ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughtsand values and how they influence behavior. Students are working on recognizing that there is good in every-thing, even stuff that seems bad atfirst. Understanding how to correctlycorrelate emotions with a situation isa skill being developed through sever-al activities that each student isadding to their “Becoming the BestSeed You Can Be” file folder andgraphic organizers. Students work onexpressing their views of their ownself awareness and how it connectsto being socially aware of how theiremotions affect other situations intheir daily life.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! First grade celebrated with our first ever book swap. Students broughtbooks to school that they no longer were reading at home. The books were displayed on long tables, and every student browsed the selections to find 5 “new” books to take home with them. After every-one found their treasures, students spread out around the room to read. The school-wide Februarybehavior reward for great behavior in the classroom was an ice cream treat. So, what better way to“chill out” with our new books then to enjoy ice cream while we read. It was an awesome way to kickoff Fredericksburg’s Read Across America week!

16 VIKING VOICE SPRING 2018/2019

The past few weeks have been a flurry of activity and learning for Mrs. Henne's first grade class.Living history occurred for President's Day when we had a surprise visit by President Lincoln, whoread aloud to our class and shared many historical events and artifacts with us. We loved learningabout history through our personal interactions with this local reenactor!

Contraction Surgery was also on the schedule recently as a fun and engaging way to learn how toread and write contraction words. Our classroom "surgeons" suited up in their lab coats, face masksand safety gloves to perform this exciting and necessary procedure to better understand some of thetricky words we use in the English language.

The Love of Reading was a big focus during the month of February. Each week our class chose twoauthors/book series to read, discuss and compare. At the end of each week the students voted forwhich author/series they "loved more" and shared their opinions and reasons with one anotherthrough very lively book talks. We then asked the students in other grade levels to share their opin-ions about the chosen authors/series and asked them to vote for their "most loved" author/series.First grade was so excited to see what their peers chose and how it compared to their votes.

During the final week of February, the students had a blast celebrating Dr. Seuss Spirit Week!Students showed their excitement each day wearing fun hats, socks and special shirts. Some studentsreally went above and beyond, creating unique t-shirts for each day's activity. Read Across AmericaDay culminated a week of fun with a special guest appearance by the Harrisburg Senators' mascot,Rascal, who came to read to our class. We also had a terrific time reading and sharing a special snackwith our Book Buddies!

All this first grade fun has kept the winter blues away!
