The Third Sunday after the Epiphany

    January 24, 2021

  • Welcome to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

The Tree of Life is Growing Here

We are called to offer sanctuary in the city,  to grow in God’s love,

to seek the renewal of the world    We are glad you are on this journey of virtual worship with us. We have been working                                 each week to improve the quality of our online liturgy. If we experience technical difficulties                             during the service, please bear with us while the issue is resolved, and if need be, reconnect to                                   the livestream or refresh your screen. You are the congregation; there is no worship without                             you!   As we gather for worship together in our different locations, we are making different choices of how to participate. Please know that, just as you are welcome to “come as you are” in the physical church, so we hope you will participate here “as you will.” As you are comfortable, stand, sit, kneel, sing, speak, and, if you have capacity, join in the chat.   Children are always welcome to participate fully in streaming worship, as they are during                           in-person worship. Although we have been worshipping this way for almost a year, your family                             may still be experimenting with what works best for you, and that’s okay. Please check each                               week to see if there is a new Godly Play video or other resources to support your worship                                   together.   Safety Guidelines for Our Worship Team: Denver’s Mayor and Colorado’s Governor have                       continued to update their orders for health and safety as COVID cases rise in our state, and                                 our Bishop has urged us to follow practices that demonstrate care for our community and                             neighbors. Our parish practices, in worship, at the office, and in pastoral care, continue to                             comply with state orders and diocesan guidelines for Houses of Worship. If you would like to                               know more about our current practices, please contact [email protected]

  •  We Depend on Your Generous Support!

Please remember that though the physical church is closed, our financial needs continue. We are committed to offering ongoing financial support to those in need through our                           fundamental partners in outreach ministry, to paying our staff, maintaining our buildings and                         grounds, and offering worship and formation opportunities.

Please give generously to support our mission and ministries in one or more of the following ways:

    · Go to the St. Andrew’s website (www.standrewdenver.org) and use the Donate button at the bottom of the page using a credit or debit card.

    · Text to donate: text to 310-582-5828 (For your first text you will have to set up an account and provide a credit/debit card number. After that it is as easy as texting! Please contact our Treasurer Bob Mosher ([email protected]) for details on setting this up.)

    · Automatic withdrawal: arrange for a monthly (or any frequency) withdrawal directly from your checking account. No need to remember whether you have donated or not. (To set this up there is a simple form to submit. Contact our Treasurer Bob Mosher ([email protected]) for details on setting this up.)

    · Mail your check to the church (2015 Glenarm Place, Denver CO 80205)

There is still time to consider making a pledge to support our mission and ministries in 2021. We are grateful for all gifts: pledges allow us to plan responsibly for the year to come. Download a Pledge Card here, or simply contact [email protected] or 303-296-1712 to make your pledge.  For more information about parish ministries and becoming involved in the life of the parish, please visit our website, www.standrewdenver.org.   During this service the Officiant will read the parish prayer list, followed by a silence for your prayers. If you would like to add names to the list, please contact [email protected].  cover art: The Call of the Disciples, Sadao Watanabe, 1983

  • The People sit The Psalm: 62:6-9, 13-14 Nonne Deo

Anglican chant: John Fenstermaker (b. 1942) 6 For God alone my soul in silence waits; * truly, my hope is in him. 7 He alone is my rock and my salvation, * my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. 8 In God is my safety and my honor; * God is my strong rock and my refuge. 9 Put your trust in him always, O people, *

pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. 13 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, * that power belongs to God. 14 Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, * for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons The First Lesson Jonah 3:1-5,10  The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great                                     city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh,                                     according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days'                                 walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, “Forty days                                     more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they                           proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they                               did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he                                 had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Here ends the Reading

The People stand The First Canticle: Surge, illuminare  setting: Edward John Hopkins (1818-1901) Arise, shine, for thy Light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. The sun shall                                       be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: But the                                     Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Isaiah 60:1, 19

  • The People sit The Second Lesson  Mark 1:14-20 After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying,                               “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good                                   news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a                                   net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make                                   you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little                                   farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending                                 the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the                                 hired men, and followed him. Here ends the Reading    The People stand The Second Canticle: Nunc dimittis  setting: Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

from the “Collegium Regale” service Lord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.  The People sit The Sermon  Officiant and People sing together, all standing The Apostles’ Creed harmonization: Jeffrey Rickard (b. 1944) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his                                   only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin                                     Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to                             the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right                                     hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy                                       Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the                           resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  •  A Collect for the Nation Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in                                     freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of                                     forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus                             Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and                                   ever.  Choir Amen.  The People sit The Anthem: Dear Lord and Father C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918) Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind;                               in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard,                                 beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up                                     and follow thee. Drop thy still dews of quietness till all our strivings cease: Take from our souls                                   the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through                                 the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak                                   through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm!

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)  The People stand The Intercessions   The General Thanksgiving Officiant and People  Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for                             all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for                                   our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable                               love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for                                     the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly                                   thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by                                   giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all                                 our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor                                 and glory throughout all ages. Amen.  Officiant Let us bless the Lord.  All Thanks be to God.   The Concluding Sentence

    We are Still the Church

As we approach a year of virtual community, we continue to discover new ways to come                               together for prayer, worship, fellowship, engagement with the works of justice, and service to                           the world. Each day brings new responses to an unfolding situation. Thank you to those of you who have offered to help as we learn new ways of                                     being together, to those of you who have responded to our ongoing efforts to be church in an                                   unexpected way.    Annual License w/Podcasting, Category C average weekly attendance 101 to 200.  A-735592 for Jun 15, 2020 - Jun 14, 2021
