EASTER TIME

Christ Appears in the Upper Room (1308-1311) by Duccio di Buoninsegna

Life in the Present Tense Clarence Jordan, Give Us This Day, April 2018

The resurrection places Jesus on this side of the grave—here and now—in the midst of this life. He is not standing on the shore of eternity beckoning us to join him there. He is standing beside us, strengthening us in this life. The good news of the resurrection of Jesus is not that we shall die and go home with him, but that he has risen and comes home with us, bringing all his hungry, naked, thirsty, sick, prisoner brothers with him. And we say, “Jesus, we’d be glad to have you,

but all these motley brothers of yours, you had better send them home. . . .”

The resurrection is simply God’s way of saying, “You might reject me if you will, but I’m going to have the last word. I’m going to put my son right down there in the midst of you and he’s going to dwell among you from here on out.”

On the morning of the resurrection, God put life in the present tense, not in the future. He gave us not a promise but a presence. Not a hope for the future but power for the present. Not so much the assurance that we shall live someday but that he is risen today. Jesus’ resurrection is not to convince the incredulous nor to reassure the fearful, but to enkindle the believers. The proof that God raised Jesus from the dead is not the empty tomb, but the full hearts of his transformed disciples. The crowning evidence that he lives is not a vacant grave, but a spirit-filled fellowship. Not a rolled-away stone, but a carried-away church.

Clarence Jordan (1912–1969), a farmer and New Testament Greek scholar, was the founder of Koinonia Farm, a small but influential religious community in southwest Georgia. He was also instrumental in founding Habitat for Humanity.

Share The Journey

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Jesus calls us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Now, Pope Francis is calling us to share a journey with our neighbors – all our neighbors, not only those who live near us, look like us, speak like us or pray like us.

The Diocese of Venice continues to promote Share the Journey, a worldwide two-year initiative of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis. We will publish a series of articles from the

Diocese that will serve as an aide to build bridges of reconciliation, understanding and hospitality, in keeping with the spirit of Share the Journey. The following is the first in this series.

What Does the Gospel Say About Refugees?

1. The Catholic Church in the United States has been helping immigrants and refugees since the founding of this nation. Indeed, it is what the Gospel calls us to do: in Matthew 25:35, Jesus tells his disciples, "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me."

2. Refugees are fleeing persecution and violence and have suffered great loss, including loss of their homes, livelihoods, possessions and families. Only 1% of these refugees get resettled. Migration Refugee Services (MRS) assists with food, clothing, shelter, employment, English as a second language, and orientation to a new community and culture. 3. Migration Refugee Services works to create "a world where immigrants, refugees, migrants, and people on the move are treated with dignity, respect, welcome and belonging."

Witnesses for Our Time Venerable Maria Kaupas Founder, Sisters of St. Casimir (1880–1940) She is remembered on April 18. Always more, always be er, always with love.

Casimira Kaupas was born in Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. When she was seventeen she traveled to Scranton, Pennsylvania, to serve as a

housekeeper to her brother, a priest. She was struck by the hardship of the Lithuanian immigrants, most of them employed in the mines. But it was also there that she encountered her first religious Sisters. “Who are those women?” she asked her brother. “They live for God alone,” was his answer. Her heart

was immediately won. Though she returned to Lithuania to care for her widowed mother, she con nued to dream of pursuing religious life in the United States. An opening came when her brother wrote to say that his fellow priests in Pennsylvania hoped for a congrega on that would serve the Lithuanian immigrant community. Eventually she received a formal invita on from Bishop John Shanahan of Harrisburg. She returned and underwent religious forma on in Scranton with the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Marywood. Her own congrega on, the Sisters of St. Casimir, was founded in 1907 when she made her religious vows and took the name Maria. The order quickly grew, establishing schools and eventually hospitals. In 1920, she received an invita on from the bishop of Kaunas to return to Lithuania and establish her congrega on there. That accomplished, she returned to the order’s motherhouse in Chicago. There, a er suffering through a long ordeal with cancer, she died on April 17, 1940. Her cause for canoniza on is in process.

Earth Day -- April 22, 2017 Prayer for the Care of the Earth God our Father and Creator, we give you thanks for the wonder of

crea on which inspires us, the fruit of the Earth which feeds us, the beauty of nature which grounds us, and the joy of life which gives us hope. Heal the places where your crea on has been marred, and restore all creatures to the splendor of your glory, that all may delight once again in your goodness. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. —Diana Macalintal, The Work of Your Hands

YOUTH CORNER

Five Great Earth Day Books for Children Celebrate Earth Day by reading some of these great children's books about Mother Earth, recycling, planting trees, and all things green. Fittingly, most of them are printed on recycled or eco-friendly paper.

The Curious Garden by Peter Brown City-dwelling kids will especially love this story. A little boy named Liam comes across a struggling garden and decides to give it some TLC. Over time, it spreads throughout the dismal gray city, bringing some lush nature back to the landscape. Talk about going green! Grade Level: Preschool and up

Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals This book offers "An A to Z Recipe for the Earth" — a cute how-to for composting. Young children who love dirt and worms will be big fans of composting because, as the story points out, you can mix everything from eggshells to fruit pulp to grass clippings and hair snippings — plus an insect or two. Grade Level: Preschool and up

Olivia's Birds: Saving the Gulf by Olivia Bouler Olivia Bouler — a young bird lover who was worried about the effects of the 2011 Gulf oil spill — took action in an awe-inspiring way. She wrote a letter to Audubon saying she was "11 years old and willing to help," and included her beautiful paintings of birds. Audubon, in turn, published the artwork and interesting bird facts in Olivia's Birds, which raised more than $175,000 for the oil spill cleanup. How cool is that?! Grade Level: Kindergarten and up

Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel Who is Michael Recycle? A green-caped superhero with the power to educate and excite towns about recycling, of course! This rhyming story gets creative in conveying the importance of recycling to kids. Grade Level: 1st grade and up

The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge by Joanna Cole Trying to explain the complex concepts of global warming and climate change to kids? Turn to Ms. Frizzle! In this adventurous field trip on the Magic School Bus, children travel up in the air above their town to see harmful carbon dioxide emissions in action — giving them a good reason to go green back on the ground. Grade Level: 2nd grade and up
