Setting
Alexandre Dumas’s setting for The Three Musketeers is in the rolling countryside of France as well as the growing city of Paris. The time period for these heroes is the 17th Century. In those times men rode gallant steeds and took the lives of their adversaries with swords, pistoles and muskets. In a time when Kings and Queens reigned none could match the lethal might of France’s Musketeers. This is a tale about a young man in search of glory who struggles to make his way in the world of a soldier.
Summary The Three Musketeers is about a boy named D’ Artagnan who is sent off to
join the Kings Musketeers and to obtain glory. Along his quest he is met by three Musketeers named Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. D’ Artagnan becomes great friends with the men as they fight side by side against the evil guards of the Cardinal who is a figure almost as powerful as the King. D’ Artagnan soon falls in love with Madame Bonacieux a beautiful woman who is kidnapped . D’ Artagnan uses another woman named Milady who is an assassin of the Cardinal and is the one who has taken his true love. D’ Artagnan escapes but Milady still wants revenge. A war rages between France and England with the Musketeers fighting on the frontlines . Meanwhile the Cardinal sends Milady from France to England to kill the Duke of Buckingham, a task she easily accomplishes. Milady then goes back to France in search of Madame Bonacieux .Milady’s poison robs D’ Artagnan of what he loves the most, Madame Bonacieux. With vengeance, D’ Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis go after Milady, track her down ,and execute her. In the end the Cardinal is tricked into signing D’ Artagnan a lieutenancy in the Musketeers which D’ Artagnan excepts. D’Artagnan’s quest was achieved he obtained glory and became a true Musketeer.
