I know many of our Zoom seders ended last year by jokingly saying “next year in person!” rather than “next year in Jerusalem!” — and yet, it looks like most of us will still spend this year’s seder separated from many of our family, friends, and loved ones.

More than a mythic future Passover where we imagine ourselves living in better times and gathered together in Jerusalem, the Passovers of 2020 and 2021 feel more like that first Passover celebration in the book of Exodus, with the Israelites hunkered down in their homes as the last of the ten plagues moved through Egypt. Yet even in that first Passover described in the Torah, the Israelites are instructed to share with their neighbors (Exodus 12:4), opening their doors to one another to mark their impending freedom. For us, though, our doors must remain closed, and the end date of the pandemic remains uncertain.

How do we get through another Zoom Passover?

For one, it’s more important to maintain our sense of connection and community than ever before. Luckily, we have a year of experience under our belts in doing this virtually, and this Passover will be no exception. We’ll have opportunities to share Passover recipes with one another, seder reflections shared on Facebook and via email, special learning opportunities, and much more.

Part of what sustained our ancestors in their first Passover meal, huddled

together in their homes, was the promise of a better future, so radically different from their current state of slavery they could scarcely have imagined it.

When we say “next year in Jerusalem,” we don’t necessarily mean we should all catch a flight to Ben Gurion Airport (which, admittedly, was a lot easier to arrange pre-COVID). We’re also imagining Yerushalayim Shel Maalah — the Heavenly Jerusalem, symbolic of our greatest aspirations and dreams of a society founded on justice, living in peace, and dedicated to holiness. It is, as Psalm 48 describes, “Splendid, sublime on the north is Mount Zion, the joy of all the earth, city of the great Sovereign. God is known in her citidaels as a refuge.”

Though our own city, our own country, and our own world may feel quite far from this vision right now, our goal as Jews is that each and every Passover — and really, each and every day — should bring us one small step closer to that Heavenly Jerusalem. That’s why we maintain our commitment to our values, to fighting for justice even mid-pandemic, and to living lives of meaning and holiness even if it means sitting in front of our computers to try and do it.

So, this Passover, I’ll be saying “next year in person!” again… but I’ll also be imagining “next year in Jerusalem,” and asking myself: What am I doing this year to bring us one step closer to Yerushalayim Shel Maalah?

This past Fall after Cantor Chomsky retired, many of us were concerned about the future. Since we were not searching for a new hazzan, who would lead our services? How could we daven without a cantor to lead us in prayer? With the difficulties and challenges that COVID and services on ZOOM presented, how could we move forward?

Of course, we knew that our rabbis would fill some of the gap. Rabbi Skolnik and Rabbi Braver could certainly handle the leading of the congregation in prayer, but they had other responsibilities to fulfill. Was it even fair to expect them to be our cantor as well? Would we be placing more demands on them than any two people could be expected to satisfy? Services on ZOOM instead of in our sanctuary presented enough difficulties. It really looked like there was trouble ahead.

But it turned out that we had adequate resources to avoid the difficulties we feared; our talented and dedicated membership would more than solve the problem. On Shabbat

morning, we have been averaging more than 100 windows open on ZOOM, meaning, with many computers shared by two or more people, that well over that number of congregants were attending services and sharing prayer and study. Leading the services with more than mere competence are talented, capable, and inspiring members of our shul. The absence of a cantor did not diminish in any way the services we have enjoyed.

I dare not attempt to list the many men and women, young and old, who have filled our need for prayer leaders for fear I would omit a deserving individual. But those who attend services are well aware of the people who consistently lead us in davening in every part of the service, read Torah and chant Haftorah, and guide us through our prayer books. Yashir ko’ach to all of them. Perhaps in the future we will add a cantor to our clergy staff, but, in the meantime, we are certainly capable of moving ahead, led by our very own people. Baruch haShem.

We have been members of Tifereth Israel for 30+ years. Martha felt very comfortable at TI because it is similar to the synagogue she attended growing up in Akron. And, as soon as Mark experienced a sermon from Rabbi Berman, he was hooked.Because neither of us grew up in Columbus, TI members soon filled our circle of friends. Many of Martha’s Hadassah friends belonged to TI. Mark was soon encouraged to join Men’s Club, a meaningful and enjoyable way to learn and to develop friendships.

Through the years, our life cycle revolved around TI: celebrating baby-naming, Consecration, Bat Mitzvah and Hebrew High graduation for our daughter Sarah, and mourning the losses of our parents, always surrounded by supportive TI friends.Tifereth Israel provides so many wonderful programs that we have enjoyed: Sisterhood/Men’s Club

Shabbat, World Wide Wrap and Men’s Club brunches, Purim Carnival, the annual picnic and outstanding artists and speakers, including Robert Merrill and Elie Wiesel. But, our most precious connection was touring Israel with Rabbi Berman and Carole Tennenbaum, definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We are very grateful to Rabbi Skolnik, Rabbi Braver, Cantor Chomsky and the TI staff for being responsive and helping us stay connected during these difficult times. The extensive calendar of classes and programs offers something for everyone! This photo isn’t a recent one, but it was actually taken at Tifereth Israel, where we hope to see all of you again very soon!

I’m excited to share the news that I have accepted the position of Executive Director of Congregation Tifereth Israel. It is hard to believe that it’s been over six months since I started as your Interim ED. I see my role changing as I move into this permanent position and I’m sure your expectations will change as well. Instead of thinking ahead a few months, we need to look further out: How do we keep 700+ families engaged in our mission? How will we meet our fundraising goals? When will we open our building? How will we keep our 101-year-old building in shape?

I’m sure these questions may cause some sleepless nights. Part of my job is to make sure it’s not also keeping you awake. We need your help! We would love to add you to our volunteer list to check in with our senior members to make sure they’re OK; help us deliver holiday bags to

members; talk with your friends and neighbors to let them know how wonderful and welcoming we are at TI; and help us with other opportunities that arise on a weekly basis. COVID has hit many of our families hard. If you’re able to donate more during this time, we’d love your additional support.

I talk with an average of 8-10 members a day. If you have a compliment for one of our amazing staff, I’d love to know. Do you have a concern you’d like to share? I’m here to listen. If we can make sure that our members are engaged and committed, we know we are doing our job. I can’t wait to get started on my to-do list. Please join me in the months and years ahead to make sure Tifereth Israel is the best we can be.
