ChildrenChildren

There were many activities for children on the Titanic. Like a modern ship there were opportunities for parents to have time away from their children.

From 1:00 to 3:00 the Gym was open to children, who were under the watchful, friendly care of instructor T. W. McCawley. He encouraged them to try out the bicycles, mechanical camels and horses, as well as the rowing machines.

Children played with many toys to pass their time on the ship. They played with tops, Balls, dolls, Jacob's ladders, jacks, Noah's Ark (which were the only toys children were allowed to play with on Sundays) and toy soldiers.

Games for AllGames for All

Deck Quoites, a game in which passengers threw circles of ropes at a marked place on the deck, was popular with people of all ages.

This game was a lot like our horse shoes but there was no spike in the middle for the rings to go around.

SundaySunday

Children were allowed to play on Sunday, but only with religious toys.

One example of this was Noah’s Ark. Adults were forbidden from playing

cards on Sunday. Church services were held on board,

for those intersted.

They also had crew to look over and supervise things like the gym, swimming pool, and squash courts.

Because cruises were a new idea they also had people to help passengers figure out how to do things and what was available on the ship.

Life boatsLife boats

During the time of the titanic, boats were not expected to carry enough life boats for every body on board. There was a weird formula to determine how many life oats they needed.

The titanic was required to have life boats to save 1060 people.

The total number of people on board was over 3000.
