PuntaNegraisasmallcoastalcommu
nitywithbeautifulbeachesandcoolCar
ibbean
breezes,
nestled
between
two
protectedareas thePortofHonduras
MarineReservetothefrontandPayne's
CreekNationalParktotherear.Itsa
perfectdestinationtoenjoyadayonthe
beach,combinedwithalittlehand
fishingandpreparingoneofthefreshest
lunchesyoucouldhopetotaste.
MonkeyRivervillageisthenorthern
mostvillageinToledo,asmallCreole
villagesituatedonthesouthernbankof
themouthoftheMonkeyRiver.Manyof
thevillagers
are
fishermen
but
they
are
alsowellknownfortheirtourguides
whotakevisitorsonboattoursonthe
MonkeyRiver.Tripswindthroughman
grovechannelsandbroadleafforests
wherevisitorscanseethetroopsof
HowlerMonkeysthatliveinthearea,as
wellasiguanas,crocodilesandmany
differentbirdspeciesintheriverinefor
ests.
Conversely,Barrancoisthesouthern
mostvillageinToledoandfamedforits
Garifunaculture.
A
new
weekly
boat
servicewouldallowforvisitorstotake
culturaltours,learningmoreaboutthe
Garifunawayoflifeincludingpreparing
cassavabreadandhudutfishcooked
withcoconutandservedwithmashed
plantains.TheTourGuideAssociation
hopestolaunchthisnewserviceearlyin
2014andyoucanbesurewewillbe
shoutingabouttheirprogresswiththis
greatnewinitiative.

TheAwardswerefoundedin2004to

createsbetterplacestoliveinandvisit
andtheyaredesignedtorecognise
thoseventuresaroundtheworldthat
makepositivecontributionstonature
andheritageconservationandtothe

anarrowpeninsulaintheSouthernLagoonbe
tweenDangrigaandBelizeCity.Emmethsaysthis
istheonlycommunityofMaroonCreoleinBelize,
agroupwhotracetheiroriginsbacktotheEbo
tribeinNigeria.TheMaroonCreolestartedasan
isolatedgroupofrunawayslaves,maroonedin
variouspartsoftheCaribbean.
TheMaroonCreolesharesomedrumming
rhythmswithotherCaribbeanandAfricancultures
butalsohaveuniquesoundsanddrumsdesigns.
The
different
types
of
drums
have
names
like
jun
jun,kinkinni, sangba,sambaianddjembe.The
sambaidrumisuniquetotheGalesPointcommu
nity. Ontheotherhand,thedjembeisoneofthe
mostpopularstylesofhanddrumplayedaround
theworldbecauseofitsversatilityandpowerful
sound.Emmethmakesandsellsalltypesoftradi
tionaldrums,bothtointerestedbeginnersand
professionalmusicians.Heusesavarietyoftropi
calhardwoodsforthebases. Goatskinispre
ferredfortheheadofthedjembe; the sambai
drumfromGalesPointtraditionallyhasadeerskin
head.
EmmethstartedhisdrumschoolinGalesPointin
1997and
moved
it
to
Punta
Gorda
two
and
ahalf
yearsago.Hehasbeendrummingsincetheageof
eight,followingafamilytraditionsinceboth
grandfathersalsoplayed. Emmethhasmade
drumsandtaughtforovertwentyfiveyears.
ThoseofyouwhohavebeentoP.G.mayknowthe
DriftwoodCafonFrontStreet,ownedbyEmmeth
andhiswifeJill.Therearedrumsforsalealong
withothercolorfulcraftsandpaintings.Jillalso
offerstastyhotandcoldcoffeedrinksandhome
mademeals.
ThedrumschoolitselfislocatedalongJoeTaylor
Creek,ahalfmileinlandfromtheseainajungle
setting.Here,Emmethgiveslessonsandinstruc
tionsindrummakingwhileJillrustlesuptastyCre
olemealsforthestudents.Jillalsoofferstradi
tionalCreolecookinglessonsforinterestedvisi

Emmeth

Emmethhasalwayslovedteachingchildrenand
nearlyfiveyearsago,startedamentoringprogram
calledDrumsNotGuns.Hewantedtoteachyoung
peopleaboutdrummingto
givethemanalternativeto
joininggangs. Hesaysthe
drumminggivesyouthsa
senseofpurposeand
teachesdisciplineandfocus.
Theycan
be
proud
of
their
accomplishmentswithout
havingtoprovethemselves
withagunonthestreetsof
BelizeCity.
EmmethandJillwereawardedasmallgrantin
2012bytheSustainableTourismProgramofthe
BTBwhichhasallowedthemtodevelopandim
provethedrummingschoolfacilities. Theynow
haveasolarpanel,compostinglatrine,traditional
firehearthkitchen,diningroom,palapaandstage.
Thegroundsalsoincludeoutdoorartinstallations,
illustratingthehistoryandbeliefsofBelize from
mythicalcreatureslikeIxtabaitoMayanartifacts

PollyWoodtenyearsagowhenshelefthercor
poratelifeinBritaintopursueherpassionfor
diving
and
marine
conservation.
AdivingtriptoRoatanin1999firstsparked
Pollysinterestinmarineconservationbutshe
quicklyfoundthattherewerefewshortterm
opportunities.Mostconservationprojectsand
placementswereforgapyearstudentsorother
longertermcommitments.
Realisingthattherewereotherswhofeltasshe
didandwhocouldhelpcontributemeaningful
datatoscientists,shestartedtoexplorethe
ideaofamarineconservationorganisation
whichcouldofferopportunitiestoamuchwider
groupofpeople.Pollytoldus,Iwantedtocre
atesomethingunique,whereanyoneofanyage
couldcome
and
help
contribute
towards
data
collection,whetheritwasforoneweekorthree
monthsandforanylevelofdivingexperience,
frombeginnerstoexperts.Sheattendednu
merousseminarsoncitizenscienceandmarine
conservation,exploredvariouslocations,talked
toscientistsanddevelopedherbusinessplan.
Oneofthemajorfactorswasfinancialsustain
abilityand,havinglookedatoperationsthat
reliedonfunding,shewantedtousewhatwas
atthattimeafairlynewconcept,thevoluntour
ismapproach.Manyscientistsrelyonalimited
pooloffundingandgrantsandtheirabilityto
collectdataisoftenlimitedtoshortvisits.With
ReefCIbeingfundedonanonprofitbasisbythe
volunteersthemselvestheyareabletooperate
yearroundandconductregularmonitoringto
contributemeaningfuldatato
thescientificcommunitywith
outtakingfundsawayfrom
existingstudies.
ReefCIhasanumberofpro
grams,including
the
Queen
Conchstudy,lobstersurveys
andturtlenestingmonitoring.
Theyhavealsodevelopedtheir
ownReefCICheck,acoralreef
monitoringprotocolfocussing
ontheuniquemarineecosys
temofSouthernBelize.This
includesthemonitoringofindi
catorspeciesandthemapping
oftheconditionofthereef.
But,perhapsoneofthebiggestdrawsisPollys
growingreputationassomethingofawhale
sharkwhisperer.Whalesharksarethelargest
fish
in
the
ocean
(up
to
46
feet
long
and
weigh
ingupto15tonsforthoseofyouinterestedin
statistics)andtheBelizeBarrierReefattracts
oneofthelargestconcentrationsofwhale
sharksintheworld.TheSapodillaCayeslie
alongoneoftheirmigration
routes,meaningthattheyare
oftenseenforuptonine
monthsoftheyear.Pollyis
modestaboutherabilityand
saystheyareeasytospotifyou
knowthesigns.Theseinclude
boobiesandternsfeedingon
thesmallfryinthewaterwhich
areaidedbytheusuallycalm
conditionsat
the
Sapodillas.
She
alsosaysthathersecret
weaponisRoland,herhusband
whogrewupfishingthesouth
ernBelizewatersandhaseyes
likeahawk.ReefCIprovidesall
whalesharkdatatotheBelize
FisheriesDepartment.Guests
alsofeeddataintotheProjectAWAREWhale

andprovidingpicturesforapublicphotoidenti
ficationdatabasewhalesharkseachhavea
uniquepatternontheirlefthandsideaboutthe

TheSapodillarangeconsistsofeightcayesform
ingahookshapeatthesouthernmostendof
theBelize.HuntingCayereputedtohavethe
mostbeautifulbeachinBelizeisabaseforthe
FisheriesDepartmentandCoastguardandalso
hasanimmigrationpost.Othercayesinclude
NicholasCaye,theGarbuttfamilysLimeCaye,
FranksCayeandTomOwensCayewhere
ReefCIisbased.Thecayesarerightontheconti
nentalshelf
so
offer
amazing
wall
dives
with
sheerdropsandotherdiveswithagradual
slope.Theseprovideanamazinglyvariedenvi
ronmentwithspongesandcorals,pelagicfish,
rays,turtlesandsharks.ReefCIhasbetween15
and20divesitesthattheyregularlyvisit. As
wellasfindingnewsitesdiverswillrevel inthe
factthattherearenootherdiveboatsinthe
area.
TomOwensCayeismanypeoplesideaofa
perfectcastawayislandandisgreatfornovice
diversofferingdivingfromtheshore,warmwa
terwithfewifanycurrentsandgoodvisibility.
Pollyisacertifieddiveinstructor,havingtrained
over300
divers
and
more
than
5000
dives
under
herbelt.Theislandisanacreofsandandpalm
treeswithelevenguestroomsincabanasanda
mainbuildingwhichalsoservesastherestau
rant,trainingcentreandmeetingplace.

includingalldiving(typicallytwotofourdivesa

ReefCIs Lionfish programmeLionfishareindigenousintheIndiopacific
oceansandtheRedsea.Intheirnatural
habitattheyarenotconsideredathreat,but
intheAtlanticCaribbeanbelttheyhaveno
naturalpredatorsandcanconsumehuge
quantitiesoffishandcrustaceansthatare
keytoourmarineenvironment.Onelionfish
wasobserved
eating
more
than
twenty
fish
inhalfanhour.
LionfishwerefirstseeninsouthernBelizein
2009andarepotentiallythemost
destructivethreattotheSapodillas.Theyare
nowseenonalmosteverydiveatevery
depth.Lionfishreachsexualmaturityatjust
oneyearoldandfemalesreleaseupto
20,000eggseveryfourdaysandtheycan
liveuptofifteenyears.Ontopofthat,theyhave
developedstrongsurvivaltechniques,abletogo
withoutfoodforthreemonthsandyetonlylose
10%ofbodymass.ReefCIhasobservedtheir
abilitytocamouflagethemselvesaccordingto
theirenvironment.Itiseasytoseewhysome
describethemasthecockroachoftheocean.
PollyistheBelizerecordholderforspearingthe
largestlionfish,awhopping44cmonly3cm
shortofthelargestrecordedlionfishspearedin
Florida.

manylionfisheachweek263inthe
firstweekofSeptember analysing
anddissectingaproportionofthem
toprovidedatatotheBelize
FisheriesDepartment.They
collaboratewith
EcoMar

fishermenonhowtosafelyspear,

havetoxinsintheirspines).Lionfish

toSanIgnacio,amorecentraltownandeasierto
accessotherareasofthecountry;ProWorld

WhatattractedyoutoToledo?
Myfirstvisitsouthwasin2003whenIwantedto
get"offthebeatenpath"andwasinterestedin
learningmoreaboutthevariouscultures.It
seemedToledowastheperfectplacetodothis
andIlovetheculturaldiversitythatyoufindhere.
