FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends,

How do you remember important things? I wonder if you are someone like me who has a few

tricks to help you remember things.

My most useful trick at remembering is writing things down. I keep a weekly “to do” list in my

calendar. I write myself post-it notes for other things and leave them where I can see them. The

interesting thing is that many times I don’t need to look at the notes to remember. The act of writing it

down somehow helps it get stored in my brain. But I don’t throw away the notes, or cross things off, until

they are done. (Just in case.)

So maybe you use a system like mine, or maybe you have an even better one. Maybe you are

lucky enough to be blessed with an excellent memory!

Another way we can help ourselves remember things is through repetition. Repeating and

memorizing can help us learn important truths, especially in our lives of faith. That is why many of us

have memorized the Lord’s prayer, it helps us remember important truths about God and how we follow

him.

You can really see in today’s section of the Lord’s prayer how important that is. The third

petition of the Lord’s prayer says, “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We might wonder why

we need to say them. In truth, God’s will will be done, whether we like it or not. So why do we say it? We

says these words to remind ourselves that we want to be a part of God’s will. We say it so we will

remember that following God means we also want God’s will to be done.

Here is Martin Luther’s explanation of the third petition of the Lord’s prayer. I hope it helps you

to stop and think about what we are actually saying when we pray this part of the prayer.

Here is our section for the month: Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is surely done without our prayer, but we ask

in this prayer that it may be done also among us.

When does this happen? God’s will is done when he hinders and defeats every evil scheme and purpose

of the devil, the world, and our sinful self, which would prevent us from keeping his name holy and

would oppose the coming of his kingdom. And his will is done when he strengthens our faith and keeps

us firm in his word as long as we live. This is his gracious and good will.

1. How do you tell what is God’s will and what is your will? Does this explanation help you

with that?

2. Do you think its possible for God’s will to truly be done on earth all the time? Why or why

not?

3. What do you find most comforting in Luther’s explanation? What do you find most

challenging?

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

God’s peace,

Pastor Serena
