The implicit promise of “InfoTopia” by technology that all of this information would make the world a better place and improve people’s lives making things easier… has not materialized . 3

WE ARE DROWNING IN INFORMATION… BOMBARDED BY IT EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. But information and wisdom are not equal. Throughout history, people have overlooked a long-known reality: the longest difference its that from the head to the heart. Words do not equal deeds.

Knowing a thing in words and owning that “thing” (and therefore being invested in actions and outcomes) are two radically different things.

Lao Tzu endeavored to move people along the path to wisdom when he said, “The first step is the ability to say, ‘I don’t know.’” Even when we can give a perfect rational verbal response to a question, answering “I don’t know” may be far more truthful from the perspective of our experience with the issue. Taking information and knowledge and turning it into demonstrable action that elicits desirable change in our lives and in those around us is wisdom.

The neocortical foible that confuses information and knowledge with insightful action ignores the import of the other two parts of our brain i.e. our lizard and limbic systems resulting in a self-deception of a sort. While this is not new it remains an essential distinction for those wanting to master stress and their overall performance.

World-wide, cases of depression have ballooned almost 20% in a decade, making it the leading cause of disability. Depression and anxiety are also a concern for the tech community whose 4

work is increasingly at the heart of business and organizational success. The pressure is on, but support for dealing with it is largely ad hoc.

Being fit—physically, emotional, and mentally—is hugely important for a community whose identity aligns with their brain power. Admitting anything less than optimal performance is perceived as a threat to their reputation. So it is not surprising that there are taboos around emotional challenges and shadow addictions.

Slowly this is changing. During BlackHat 2018 topics of addiction, stress, burnout, depression and suicide were discussed alongside hacking techniques and security innovations. But for the person in stress’ embrace, the urgency remains. The tech desperate enough to reach out for help in handling stress is often already in a battle for their lives.

The good news is that these smart, successful people, when provided with the best tools and methods for putting all ‘three of their brains’ to work for them, quickly get their lives back. And better still, they add a few badass powers to their backpack.

How do they do this?

The secret lies within our triune brain and how all three parts are optimized to work together. There are some simple techniques for getting ALL three parts of you onto the same team: Team Balance. LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION ON STRESS

• Information is necessary but not sufficient to gain mastery over stressors and challenging life situations to get the results you want and deserve.

• What’s being said online about stress is just that… about stress. Information alone does nothing to solve it and getting more information without taking action puts you at risk of deceiving yourself about how much you really understand stress.

• Find a person, mentor, coach or course that gets you taking meaningful action.

• You have two choices for the kinds of changes you want to pursue: 1. Resilience: Gets you back to where you were before; 2. Transilience: Takes you to the next level when you want to be more than great again, when you want to move forward in your life.

• It is human nature to wait until the last possible minute to decide to take an action—just don’t be too late. Windows of opportunity do close.

• Drugs and medication have their place and may be needed to help people through transitional moments. But they are not life solutions. Even they are more effective when augmented with life-skills helping you deal with workplace stress.

TAKE ACTION: ALIGN YOUR ‘3 BRAINS’

• People don’t learn and adapt through information alone. Experience is essential.

• We are driven by survival (L1), by connection (L2), and by meaning (L3). That is, all three aspects of our triune brain are constantly at play in our lives.

• Marketing (and Google, and FB and…) have built empires on the premise that we rationalize our emotional decisions (not make rational decisions and then feel good about them).

• Optimal living comes from aligning, balancing—and when necessary—healing all three aspects of our lives: body, mind, heart.

• Recover balance between your rational and emotional brains to regain control—this can’t be done through rationalization and language.

• Repair your faulty alarm systems that after incessant stress (and no safeguards) result in hyper-and hypo arousal.

When I first started out, I had a dream to help create a more peaceful and prosperous world. I began by training international youth as global citizens and leaders who could work with people of all nations, cultures and religions as wise stewards of our planet. Eventually I found my way to the United Nations.

More recently, and based on my years of experience at the UN and my #1 Amazon best seller entitled, United Nations Unlocked: The Missing Link the UN Needs to Tackle Global Terrorism and the Coming Tech Tsunami, I was contracted by the UN’s Chief Information Officer. The task: to develop a vision for how the ICT Network (the network of CIOs of the 30+ United Nations organizations including UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, etc.) could re-envision themselves as a force for innovation and change. The goal was to support the larger work underway of moving the UN toward a UN 2.0, one capable of being effective in our digital twenty-first century as complexity grows.

As I worked with the UN’s CIO and her team, I began to realize that in spite of being a pragmatic “how-to” farmers daughter, I was still missing something pretty major. These smart, mission driven people were just not ready to take on something else.

Already stretched, overwhelmed, and stressed, they are able to energetically adopt even simple and strategic shifts. Their greater reality is that they are barely keeping their heads above survivable levels of stress and burnout.

Sure, I had crafted a strategic pathway to work in complex cases like the UN. But looking at this as a specific attempt at change, it was a sad failure. In retrospect it was a great gift. After watching this ICT Network wrestle with the concepts and the implementation issues, it led me to zero in on the heart of the matter.

Even before this work with the UN’s CIO, I had identified why organizational change was essential, the organizational change needed, and a path for that change. But a major stumbling block remained. The team was not prepared to take that path, no matter the lip-service given. Each person was on the digital transformation highway BUT driving with their brakes on. They knew the objectives, even their “big why,” and what they needed to do. But something was holding them back.

In my search for a simple doable process (I hate long drawn out processes that seem to use “professional approaches” as an excuse for ineptitude) that could fill this gap, I stumbled across an enormously insightful and little-known methodology. Our triune brain is still an enormous mystery even though science has come a long, long way. But there are a few things we don’t need science to tell us.

First, that mastering our souls (body, heart and mind) is an ongoing human challenge. The ancient Greeks and Indians used a metaphor of the latest technologies of their time—a chariot—to explain this. Each charioteer handles two very powerful horses of dramatically different natures. Gaining mastery over these powerful and magnificent aspects of ourselves is a life-long endeavor. To handle those two extraordinary horses, our executive brain must understand and have masterful ways of working with them, keeping them healthy and fully appreciating all they can do.

Second, we each know the powerful reward center in our brains responsible for positive emotions such as joy, happiness and triumph when we win. And quite the opposite when we fail.
