Matthew 21

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. 4This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

5Say to the Daughter of Zion, See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, On a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

6The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David”“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”“Hosanna in the highest!”

10When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

The expectation of the people: some kind of trouble with Rome.

The masses looked for a positive outcome of the coming conflict. Jesus as King. (Let prosperity reign!)

Psalm 721Endow the king with your justice, O God,

the royal son with your righteousness. 2He will judge your people in righteousness,

your afflicted ones with justice. 3The mountains will bring prosperity to the people,

May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him

and bless him all day long. 16Let grain abound throughout the land;

on the tops of the hills may it sway. Let its fruit flourish like Lebanon;

let it thrive like the grass of the field. 17 May his name endure forever;

may it continue as long as the sun.

All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.

18Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.

19Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

The masses looked for a positive outcome of the coming conflict. Jesus as King.

The leaders saw a very negative outcome (John 11:47-48). The masses had faith in the future while the leaders just hoped to survive. Jesus as disaster.

John 11:45-53 45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” 51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. 53So from that day on they plotted to take his life.




The reality was that there indeed was already a lot of trouble, but Rome was merely a symptom of the whole. The trouble was simply that of sin and its multi-faceted consequences.




Isaiah 59:1-41Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save,
