StrokeA cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain  function due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia  (lack of blood flow) caused by blockage ( thrombosis, arterial embolism ), or a hemorrhage.

It can cause permanent neurological damage  and death.

What is Ischemia?

Ischemia is the medical term for what happens when your HEART   muscle doesn't get enough OXYGEN. Ischemia usually happens because of a shortage of BLOOD  and OXYGEN to the heart muscle. It is usually due to NARROWING or BLOCKAGE of one or more of the CORONARY ARTERIES (which supply blood to the heart muscle). In many cases ischemia is a temporary problem. Your heart may be able to get enough blood through your diseased coronary arteries while you are resting but may suffer from ischemia during EXERTION or STRESS.

What is Hemorrhagic? It results from a WEAKENED VESSEL that RUPTURES and BLEEDS into the surrounding BRAIN. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue. The two types of hemorrhagic strokes are INTRACEREBRAL (within the brain) hemorrhage or SUBARACHNOID hemorrhage.Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures. Two types of weakened blood vessels usually cause hemorrhagic stroke: aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to CORONARY HEART DISEASE, HEART FAILURE , STROKE,KIDNEY FAILURE , and other health problems."Blood pressure" is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways.About 1 IN 3 ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES HAS HBP. The condition itself usually has no signs or symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, though, HBP can damage your HEART, BLOOD VESSELS, KIDNEYS, and other parts of your body.

SmokingSmoking is bad for your health. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Cigarette smoking causes 87 PERCENT of LUNG CANCER DEATHS. It is also responsible for many other cancers and health problems. These include LUNG DISEASE, HEART and BLOOD VESSEL DISEASE, STROKE and CATARACTS. Women who smoke have a greater chance of certain pregnancy  problems or having a baby die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Your smoke is also bad for other people - they breathe in your smoke  secondhand and can get many of the same problems as smokers do.

A Fat Stomach

Abdominal obesity, also known as BELLY FAT or clinically  as CENTRAL OBESITY, is excessive abdominal fat  around the stomach and abdomen. There is a strong correlation between CENTRAL OBESITY  and CARDIO VASCULAR DISEASE. Abdominal obesity is not confined only to the elderly and obese subjects. Abdominal obesity has been linked TO ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE as well as other METABOLIC and VASCULAR DISEASES. Visceral and central abdominal fat and waist circumference show a strong association with  TYPE 2 DIABETES..

Poor DietPoor nutrition habits can be a behavioral health issue, because nutrition and diet affect how you feel, look, think and act. A bad diet results in lower core strength, slower problem solving ability and muscle response time, and less alertness. Poor nutrition creates many other negative health effects as well.

Lack of Physical ActivitiesA lack of physical activity, or people’s failure to spend 150 minutes a week doing moderate physical activity (eg, brisk walking for 30 minutes, 5 days a week), causes around 6–10% of four major non-communicable diseases (CORONARY HEART DISEASE [CHD],TYPE 2 DIABETES, and BREAST and COLON CANCER ) worldwide, and was responsible for around 5.3 million of the 57 million deaths globally in 2008.The new estimates published Online First in The Lancet, indicate that physical inactivity has become a contributor to the burden of disease and shortening of  life expentancy similar to tobacco smoking or obesity.

High Levels of Bad CholesterolIn a world of good cholesterol and bad, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is the bad boy of the two. LDL collects in the WALLS OF BLOOD VESSELS, CAUSING THE BLOCKAGES OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS. Higher LDL levels put you at GREATER RISK for a HEART ATTACK from a sudden BLOOD CLOT in an ARTERY narrowed by ATHEROSCLEROSIS.Getting your LDL cholesterol checked helps determine your risk for heart disease. If your LDL cholesterol is high, treatment can reduce your chance of having a heart attack.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or  bood sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. With TYPE 1 DIABETES, your body does not make insulin. With TYPE 2 DIABETES, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious problems. It can damage your EYES,KIDNEYS, and NERVES. Diabetes can also cause HEART DISEASE, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called GESTATIONAL DIABETES.

Drinking too muchIt’s not always easy to see when your drinking has crossed the line from moderate or social use to problem drinking. But if you consume alcohol to cope with difficulties or to avoid feeling bad, you’re in potentially dangerous territory. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse can sneak up on you, so it’s important to be aware of the warning signs and take steps to cut back if you recognize them. Understanding the problem is the first step to overcoming it. Despite the potentially lethal damage that heavy drinking does to the body—including CANCER, HEART PROBLEMS, and LIVER DISEASE—the social consequences can be just as devastating.

Stress and DepressionStress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight-or-freeze” reaction, or the stress response.

Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress, including:• Pain of any kind• HEART DISEASE• Digestive problems• Sleep problems• DEPRESSION• Weight problems• Autoimmune diseases• Skin conditions, such as eczema

Heart Disorder

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of U.S. men and women, accounting for 40% of all U.S. deaths. That's more than all forms of cancer combined. Why is heart disease so deadly? One reason is that many people are slow to seek help when symptoms arise. Yes, someone gripped by sudden chest pain probably knows to call 911. But heart symptoms aren't always intense or obvious, and they vary from person to person and according to gender.12 Heart Symptoms Never to Ignore

Anxiety Chest discomfort Cough Dizziness Fatigue Nausea or lack of appetite Pain in other parts of the body Rapid or irregular pulse Shortness of breath. Sweating Swelling Weakness

Page 23: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Stroke - PreventionYou can help prevent a stroke if

you control risk factors and treat other medical conditions that can lead to a stroke.

And if you have already had a stroke or a TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA), you can prevent another stroke  in the same way, by controlling risk factors and treating medical conditions that can lead to stroke.

Page 24: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Adopt a healthy lifestyle Do not smoke or allow others to smoke around you. Make your home and car smoke-free. Limit alcohol to 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a

day for women. Stay at a healthy weight. Being overweight makes it

more likely you will develop high blood pressure, heart problems, and diabetes. These conditions make a stroke more likely.

Do activities that raise your heart rate.  Get at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. Walking is a good choice. You also may want to do other activities, such as running, swimming, cycling, or playing tennis or team sports.

GREEN

&

GOLD

Page 25: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Adopt a healthy lifestyle Start slowly, set modest goals and gradually increase

your physical activity levels over time. Eat a balnced diet  that is low in cholesterol, saturated

fats, and salt.  Have your blood pressure taken by a healthcare

professional at least once every two years and discuss your reading together. If you have high blood pressure, your doctor may monitor you more often and provide specific recommendations

Stress can cause blood pressure to rise, so set aside sometime every day to relax.

Identify the source of your stress. The first step in managing your stress is figuring out the cause so you can take steps to address the problem.

GREEN

&

GOLD

Page 26: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Adopt a healthy lifestyle Share your feelings. Talking to a friend or family

member can provide you with the moral support to relieve stress.

Try relaxation techniques. Meditation and deep breathing can relieve tension and help reduce blood pressure.

Get plenty of sleep. Have a waist measurement of more than 102

cm (40 inches) for men or over 88 cm (35 inches) for women.

Reduce your fat intake to 20-35% of your daily calories

GREEN

&

GOLD

Page 27: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Adopt a healthy lifestyle Choose healthy fats such as polyunsaturated and

monounsaturated fats found in vegetable oils, nuts and fish

Limit your intake of saturated fat, which is found primarily in red meat and high-fat dairy products.

Avoid trans fats, which are frequently found in foods made with shortening or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, hard margarines, fast foods and many ready-prepared foods. Trans fats raise bad cholesterol levels and lower levels of good cholesterol.

Individuals with heart disease, diabetes and high blood cholesterol are advised to limit dietary cholesterol to less than 200 mg/day.

Choose lower-fat dairy products such as skim milk and low-fat cheeses.

GREEN

&

GOLD

Page 28: THE TRUTH ABOUT STROKE

Adopt a healthy lifestyle Eat more whole grains, cereals, fruit and

vegetables. For snacks, try low-salt pretzels, plain popcorn

or fruit, rather than higher-fat or “junk food” type of snacks.

Use low-fat cooking methods such as baking, broiling or steaming and try to avoid fried food.

Drink plenty of water. Learn from your doctor or diabetes educator

how to monitor your blood sugar. Lose weight slowly. Make your goal of obtaining

a healthy weight a long-term commitment.
