Hymn When in our Music God is Glorified

10:30am Choral EucharistTHE BOOK of ALTERNATIVE SERVICES

When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride,it is as though the whole creation criedAlleluia!

How often, making music, we have founda new dimension in the world of sound,as worship moved us to a more profoundAlleluia!

So has the Church, in liturgy and song,in faith and love, through centuries of wrong, borne witness to the truth in every tongue,Alleluia!

And did not Jesus sing a psalm that nightwhen utmost evil strove against the Light? Then let us sing, for whom he won the fight,Alleluia!

Let every instrument be tuned for praise!Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing alwaysAlleluia! Amen.

5CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thyprecious blood.Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, in glory everlasting.O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage;Govern them, and lift them up for ever.Day by day we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name, ever world without end.Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in thee.O Lord, in thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.

Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; welcoming sinnersand inviting them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God's forgiveness.

Silence is keptPresider Most merciful God,All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by

what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved youwith our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We aretruly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, havemercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in yourways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; throughJesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Nicene Creed Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of theHoly Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of theFather. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the PeopleIn the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for theChurch of the Virgin Islands (The Episcopal

Church); we pray for our diocese of New Westminster;for the Dean and Archdeacons of the diocese as theygive leadership during this transition time and for theguidance of the Holy Spirit to all members of Synod

Sanctus Choir (from Missa Brevis in D, adapt. R.G.Lang) Benjamin Britten

Presider We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because inyour tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world mightbe saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed itfor ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrificefor the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted asyour children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you.On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat:this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gaveit to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood which is shed foryou and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do thisfor the remembrance of me.”In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident inhis sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

All Christ has died,Christ is risen,Christ will come again.

Presider Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our willto serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, accept-able to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, withyou and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

11CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer After CommunionPresider Gracious God,All in this sacrament

we have shared the body and blood of Christ.May we who have been nourished by holy thingsbear witness to his light, and share in his eternal priesthood;for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen

DoxologyPresider Glory to God,All whose power, working in us,

can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.Glory to God from generation to generation,in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

the church to celebrate the feast of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music. Connections between thehistorical figure of Cecilia and music are eitherhighly tenuous or non-existent, but since the six-teenth century festivals and concerts have beenheld and music composed in her honour, e.g., byPurcell and Handel. Britten had sought a Latintext for Hymn to St. Cecilia since the mid-1930s,but instead set an English poem provided by W.H.Auden, a fellow house guest at the Long Islandhome of Elizabeth Mayer where Britten and part-ner Peter Pears stayed during most of their time inNorth America (1939-1942). Britten completedthe Hymn on the voyage back to England in 1942after writing the score out from memory; NewYork customs officials, fearing they might containenemy ciphers, had confiscated his manuscripts.Unlike the earlier odes mentioned above, Britten’svirtuoso setting is for unaccompanied choir, thusthe references to instruments in Auden’s third sec-tion are accomplished using vocal means alone. In 1943 the Rev. Walter Hussey, vicar of St.Matthew’s, Northampton, asked Britten to writean anthem on the occasion of its golden jubilee.Rejoice in the Lamb was thus the first of the manyworks Hussey commissioned as he sought a rap-prochement between the church and contempo-rary art; other artists he approached includedHenry Moore, Marc Chagall, Gerald Finzi (Lo, theFull, Final Sacrifice), and Leonard Bernstein

The final section of Rejoice inthe Lamb is a quietly ecstatic Hallelujah, redolentwith Purcellian dotted rhythms. There are comparatively few liturgical works inBritten’s output but one of these is the Festival TeDeum (1944), written for the centenary of St.Mark’s, Swindon at a time when he was otherwiseengaged in completing Peter Grimes. Britten valuedsimplicity in music and this is evident in the use ofunison chorus in the first half of the Te Deum(which is not to say it is simple – ask the choirmembers about the ever-changing time signa-tures!). Deacon’s Notes - NOVEMBER 17, 2013

In the gospel reading this week Jesus tells us how diffi-cult it is to live a life in God. This poem called TheInvitation (excerpt) by Dorothy Hunt, psychotherapistand Spiritual Director in the Buddhist tradition, describes the mystery with contemporary and universallanguage.

When God comes in your house it is only by your invitation, but even your invitation is God's,for she has always been landlady and tenant, windows and walls, the fire in your hearthand the cold wind blowing at your door.

At first, her visits seem so welcome. She brings tea and cookies and loves youso sweetly inside your own heart. You keep inviting her backby your prayers and meditations, imagining you've found the one you always wantedwho will hold you on her endless lapand take away your pain forever.

But pretty soon, she starts arrivingunexpectedly, at odd hours of the day and night, and every time she comes, she takes something away–a pretty picture here, a bookcase there, maybe even some trashyou are happy to be rid of in your basement.

But at some point, it occurs to youshe intends to move in completely. And now the mind starts backing up:"Perhaps you could come back another day, after I've worked on my house, after I've bought nicer furniture, after I've finished my fight with evil, after I've planted a peace garden."

But you must know that if you invite God in,sooner or later she will set up house, and when she does, beware;for she tosses out every single thingshe does not need, which, in the case of the personality,is every single thing you thought you were.

Every thought and cherished belief she just throws out on the garbage heap;

and that might be fine if she replaced them, but she never replaces those sacred thoughts;she utterly destroys them. She strips the coveringsoff the walls, and peels the paper from the window glass, opens the door to invite in the wind, and every creature you wanted kept out.

Sometimes she cleans your house gently, dismantling it room by room. But often, she just comes in with a torch, and you feel in your gut the fire burnin the center of your separate comfort, and you watch the contents of your housemelt and turn to ash, and the roof blow off.

And just when you thinkthere is nothing more that she could take, she opens the ground beneaththe barely intact shell of your house, and all the levels of your beingfall into the space that has no name;and you are left alone in all the world, without a map, without a path, without a point of view.

And you know you are creator of your dreams, your dreams of mountains and rivers, calm seas and storm clouds, crashes of lightning and spacecraft, beautiful babies asleep at the breast, joyful dancing and puppies at play,Spring's new blossoms, and the threat of Winter's war.

And at this point, what you are inside your houseis simply What is looking out.Nothing's left but what is looking, yet everything you see is you.Now your life turns inside out.Your body is the world of beinglooking out of Just What Is.
