Today, the University of Belgrade comprises 31 faculties (organized into 4 groups: social sciences and humanities, medical sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and technological sciences), 11 research institutes, University Library and 6 university centers..

•The University of Belgrade and Faculties within it organize academic and professional studies based on accredited higher education study programmes.

•Academic study programme gives students the opportunity to develop and apply their scientific, professional and artistic achievements, while professional study programme enables them to apply the knowledge and skills necessary for later work.

•The family of 72,000 students, enrolled at 31 faculties, lives in 11 student hostels, and eats in 14 restaurants.

Primary and specialised studies are completed after passing all required exams, fulfilling other study obligations and, if so required by the study programme, writing a degree paper or passing a degree exam.

Master academic studies are completed after passing all required exams and fulfilling other study obligations, writing the final paper and its public defending, pursuant to the study programme.

Doctoral studies are completed after passing all required exams, writing a PhD thesis and its public defending. Exceptionally, doctoral degree may be acquired by a person who completed medical studies and specialisation, on the grounds of a defended dissertation based on work published in the top world journals.

20.707 MS degrees have been received and 12.073 doctoral theses have been defended up to 2008. The number of teachers and associates increased alongside the number of undergraduate and graduate students.

Nowadays the University of Belgrade employs 2.539 teachers (1.025 full-time professors, 706 associate professors, 808 senior lecturers, 2.411 assistants,lecturers and other teaching associates) and 2.807 non-teaching staff.

So far, 6,437 students graduated from Faculty of Mining and Geology, 590 gained Master's degree and 448 defended their doctoral dissertation.

The Department of Hydrogeology was established in 1971. It changed names and curriculums but not significantly the organizational structure.

A total of 700 students graduated from 1971 through 2012, or seventeen hydrogeological engineers yearly on average.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Cooperation with many professional and research institutions or their units concerned with hydrogeology (faculties, institutes, companies) from France, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Iceland, U.S.A., Slovakia, Hungary…

Members of the Institute have worked as experts in many research projects in Algeria, Libya, Iraq, Iran, and served as experts and consultants to UN or prominent international and national companies.

Recently several large international projects conducted or still on going (Interreg, EUREKA, SEE...)

The Centre of Karst Hydrogeology was established in November 2008, by the decision of the Educational Scientific Council of the Faculty of Mining & Geology.

The Centre of Karst Hydrogeology consists of several permanent employee professors and part-time researchers and PhD students. All of them have chosen the karst as their main topic in education and in research. The tasks of the Centre are research in various fields of karst hydrogeology along with promotion of obtained results, education, scientific, commercial and technical cooperation with similar institutions and organizations worldwide.

CKH staff undertook many research projects in Serbia and abroad (Algeria, Iraq, Georgia, Bhutan, Seychelles, Somalia, Balkan and former YU countries) mainly concerning groundwater (GW) management, GW exploitation in municipal water supply, environmental impact studies, irrigation, reservoir water tightness, basic and detailed hydrogeological maps.

The Centre for Karst Hydrogeology (CKH) together with the Geological Survey of Republic of Srpska, Zvornik, Hydro-Electro System on Trebisnjica River (HET), Trebinje and GEF project DIKTAS (Dinaric karst transboundary aquifers) organized an intrenational workshop „Problems and Solutions in Numeric Modeling of Karst Aquifers“ in Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina, between 5-8 June 2013. The lecturers were Neven Krešić, AMEC, SAD and Alex Mikczewski, Woodard & Curran, SAD, both well known experts for modeling of groundwater and authors of recent publication Hydrogeological Conceptual Site Models - Data Analysis and Visualization published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group).
