18. Course Description:
This course is designed to give students an in depth understanding of the nature of emergency nursing and
identify the role of the nurse in meeting different needs of emergency patients. The course provides students
with the knowledge and skills that help them to provide efficient nursing care during emergency and disaster

situations. The course will provide students the knowledge and skill to deliver basic and complex care to urgent,
emergent, and critical patient population. Also nursing care for specific medical emergencies is considered.
The clinical part consists of two rotations; one in the clinical area and another in the lab. The practice in the clinical area introduces care for emergency clients, provides opportunities to enhance critical thinking, communication and systematic inquiry skills that are necessary to provide care to emergency clients and their families. The practice in the lab intends to introduce emergency nursing students to Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

ILO 1: Demonstrate competency in performing and providing the role of a professional nurse
in quality care provision for individuals, families, and groups.
Specific Course Objectives 1.1 Recognize basic and advanced concepts of emergency nursing care. 1.2 Outline the basic core concepts of triage. 1.3 Discuss the management of patients suffering from an emergency
situation. 1.4 Explain the chain of survival. 1.5 Recall the algorithms of basic and advanced life support. 1.6 Apply appropriate nursing management principles based on

emergency condition. 3.2 Compare and contrast different emergency patient conditions based on functional body systems and priority of emergency care. 3.3 Generalize principles learned of emergency care in different situations and in different clinical settings.
3.4 Generate solutions to complex emergency situations utilizing principles learned through the course.

23. Course Policies:
A- Attendance policies:
Students must attend all classes of this course.
Any student with absence of 15% of the classes of any course, will be illegible to sit for the final exam and will be given the university zero (F grade) in this course.
In the case (b) above, if a student submits an official sick report authenticated by university clinic or an accepted excuse by the Dean of his/her faculty, the student will be considered as withdrawn from the course, and a "W" will be shown in the transcript for this course.
Students are not allowed to come late to classes. Any student coming late will not be allowed to attend the class and he/she will be marked absent.
B- Absences from exams and handing in assignments on time:
Failure in attending a course exam other than the final exam will result in zero mark unless the student provides an official acceptable excuse to the instructor who approves a make up exam.
Failure in attending the final exam will result in zero mark unless the student presents an official acceptable excuse to the Dean of his/her faculty who approves an incomplete exam, normally scheduled to be conducted during the first two weeks of the successive semester.
Assignments and projects should be submitted to the instructor on the due date.
C- Health and safetyprocedures:
Students should comply with the Faculty of Nursing policies regarding pre-hospital training immunizations. Students should comply with the training areas policies regarding infection control, general precautions, and patient isolation.
D- Honesty policy regarding cheating, plagiarism, misbehavior:
Cheating, plagiarism, misbehaviour are attempts to gain marks dishonestly and includes; but not limited to:
Copying from another student’s work.
Using materials not authorized by the institute.
Collaborating with another student during a test, without permission.
Knowingly using, buying, selling, or stealing the contents of a test.
Plagiarism which means presenting another person’s work or ideas as one’s own, without attribution.
Using any media (including mobiles) during the exam

E- Examination Instructions for Students
Bring with you all exam requirements (blue pen, pencils, sharpener, eraser, calculator etc.), borrowing from others is not allowed.

Be in the exam room at least 10 minutes before exam starting time
It’s not allowed to enter the exam room late. In case of coming late you have to contact the course coordinator immediately
It’s not allowed to leave the Exam room before the end of the END OF AT LEAST ONE-THIRD OF THE EXAM TIME.
Write your name and university number on the exam paper and computerized sheet using Blue pen only.
Use pencil ONLY to shade your answers on the computerized answer sheet.
Do not leave examination room except under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Senior Invigilator and you should be accompanied by an invigilator, if needed.

26. Additional information:
Clinical Practice:
•The clinical practice will be divided into two equal rotations (5 days each); one in the lab and another in the emergency department.
•The student is expected to spend an average of 4 hours shift/week for 10 weeks of supervised clinical practice at the assigned clinical setting.
•Each week the student is expected to identify his or her learning needs and submit a weekly practicum report with the identified learning objectives and reflection on learning for each shift (only during the emergency department rotation).
•The clinical instructor is assigned to facilitate, guide and support the students in a way that allows personal and professional development in terms of both individual and formal educational aims.
•Goal formulation, Planning and evaluation of the training take place in close co-operation between students and the clinical instructor.
•Regardless of any acceptable excuse, missing two clinical days will result in 5 marks deduced from the evaluation.
