We expect approximately sixty faculty members and administrators from our nine member campuses to participate along with representatives from major public policy organizations and foundations. A preliminary program of the Roundtable in enclosed. The conference will include panels on the relationship of university research to the formation of public policy and on the challenges and opportunities faced by activist scholars in their professional lives and in their publication experiences. Breakout sessions after each of the major panels will allow the faculty and administrators to debate the issues of the Roundtable and to make recommendations. Your role would be to join two or three other administrators from our member institutions on a panel - before the final plenary session - to give the participants your impression of the issues and recommendations raised in the preceding panels and breakout sessions. The idea is to get a well-rounded set of perspectives at the Roundtable and to get some practical on-site feedback from upper-level administrators whose visions of the academic landscape will be different, at least in part, from those of the faculty. MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity institution.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research (MCLR), we are writing to invite you to be part of the administrators' panel at the MCLR's third annual Scholars' Roundtable to be held on August 16-18,1996 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The theme of this year's roundtable conference is "From Transformed to Transformational Leadership: Latino Scholarship and Latino Activism." We expect approximately sixty faculty members and administrators from our nine member campuses to participate along with representatives from major public policy organizations and foundations.

We know you are already fairly well-acquainted with the MCLR and its mission. We, nevertheless, want to highlight the importance of the MCLR to your university so that you fully understand the significance of your participation in the Roundtable.

The MCLR is a regional organization of nine Midwestern universities that was founded in 1990 by Latino faculty and administrators for the purpose of providing leadership in the professional advancement of Latino scholars and leadership in the promotion of research on Latino issues in the Midwest. The MCLR believes that its mission fills an important need at each of its member institution where Latino faculty often do not have the critical mass to address the issues of recruitment, placement, promotion, research, curriculum and programming that affect their academic careers and the diversity of the environments on their home campuses.

The MCLR believes that the active pursuit of its mission can make an important contribution to the diversification of the intellectual and cultural environment at each university by (1) assisting in the creation of a system of resources that will improve the opportunities for recruiting and retaining Latino faculty at its member campuses, and (2) clarifying the importance of research on Latino issues to the respective university administrations and to the larger university communities.

Through their annual dues, the upper administrations of the nine member universities recognize the need for a body such as the MCLR to pool their collective resources for the benefit of all of the campuses. Above all, the MCLR provides a focused and consistent perspective on Latino faculty and Latino research at a level that each institution cannot achieve by itself. It also provides Latino faculty and the upper administrations opportunities for networking on their campuses and beyond them through the Scholars' Roundtable, the MCLR Latino Research List-Serve, the Midwest Latino Scholars' Directory and periodic reports as well as other aspects of an emerging program of service to member institutions that includes regular meetings with higher administrators and Latino faculty.

The annual Scholars' Roundtable is one of the main vehicles for achieving the mission of MCLR and serving its member institutions. The primary focus on the development on Latino faculty makes it crucial to have the involvement of high-level administrators from the member campuses to provide a balance of perspectives that will be mutually enriching. Outside experts in fields and areas of activities related to the theme of the conference are also invited.

We know that high-level scholar-administrators like you are greatly overburdened with duties at your respective institutions, and that your time is precious. Nevertheless, we hope that you will be able to make time in your

busy schedule for this important meeting. We believe your background and expertise will make you an important contributor to the agenda of MCLR in raising consciousness and discussion on issues of research and professional development in a systematic and analytical fashion.

Because MCLR is paying the cost of all of the faculty's and panelists transportation, lodging, and meals, we are asking administrators like yourself to assist us with the cost of your own travel. The MCLR will cover the room and meals. However, if this is not possible, the MCLR will be happy to pay for your travel as well.

Please confirm or decline your participation at the Roundtable by filling out the attached form and mailing it Lourdes Kuthy at the MCLR office or by faxing it to (517) 432-1151.

For additional information, call Lourdes Kuthy at (517) 432-1150 or contact her through e-mail at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Jose Cuello Chair, Board of Directors
