With an enrollment of more than 7,200 students, ESU has a strong commitment to academic excellence. Teacher education, the health sciences and programs associated with science and technology are just a few examples of fields of study experiencing unprecedented growth in enrollment. With the university’s unique programs in such areas as computer technology, bio-technology, chemical bio-technology and art and design, ESU is poised to offer its students another century of academic excellence. The campus consists of 62 buildings on 213 acres and boasts a student-to-teacher ratio of 21 to 1. More than 2,100 students reside in eight residence halls. The university also offers apartment-style housing for another 200 students and has added accomodations for an additional 540 students with the addition of University Ridge, a student apartment complex located adjacent to campus. Approximately 74 percent of the students receive some form of financial

aid, including scholarships, loans and grants. The 2007-08 academic year will mark the university’s 115th year of operation and the school has approximately 32,000 alumni. ESU, like many other public colleges and universities across the country, started as a normal school, a professional school for the training of teachers.ESU History East Stroudsburg Normal School was founded to serve students in the state’s normal school fourth district and had 320 students enrolled when classes started on September 4, 1893. In 1926 after the state assumed control of the school, the original name was changed to East Stroudsburg State Teachers’ College. The school became East Stroudsburg State College in 1960 to reflected the school’s expanded curriculum with liberal arts programs and graduate degrees. In July 1983, the Pennsylvania General Assembly established the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education consisting of 14 universities and East Stroudsburg University was born as a comprehensive regional institution.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Diane Decker begins her third season as the East Stroudsburg University assistant women’s basketball coach. Decker is Simpson’s top assistant and is responsible for on-court teaching as well as recruiting Prior to coming to ESU, Decker spent three years as head coach at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, where she guided the Patriots to the District XI Playoffs each season. Decker was a standout player at Marian Catholic High School and Villanova University. The Wildcats played in the NCAA Tournament all four years during her college career, including her sophomore season when they went to the Sweet 16. She was team captain as a senior. Decker is very familiar with the Warriors program, as she coached four current or former ESU players - 2007 ESU graduate and co-captain Amy Jones and sophomores Alexa Detzi, DeAnna Rayam and Mel Villano - at Freedom High School in Bethlehem. She also coached against current players Jhazmin Brown, Karla Cardona and Jackie Yandrisevits in high school, and coached all of the aforementioned players, along with senior Brittany Lacey, on a summer league team. “Diane is experienced and she knows the game,” ESU head coach Juliene Simpson said. “She brings a winning mentality. She never had a losing season at Marian Catholic or at Villanova and was in the district playoffs every year at Freedom High School.” At Marian Catholic High School, the Mahanoy City native set the school scoring record with over 2,300 points and also grabbed 1,000 rebounds. Marian Catholic won a state title and two district championships during her career, and she was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2006.

SEASON OUTLOOK The East Stroudsburg University women’s basketball team enters the 2007-08 season as the two-time defending PSAC East regular season champions, and has been tabbed as the favorite to win the title once again this winter. The Warriors are coming off a 25-4 season in which they tied the school record for victories in a single season, but if they are to repeat, they will have to do it with a host of new faces playing key roles. Gone are a pair of four-year starters in Maryellen Onofre and Amy Jones, who helped take the program from a 7-20 record in their freshman year to a 41-16 mark over the last two seasons. Alyssa Antolick also joined the squad as a fifth-year senior following an All-American career at DeSales and was named first team All-PSAC East in her only year at ESU. While the Warriors lose 25 points, 12 rebounds and all of the intangibles associated with three senior leaders, they still return three starters and nine letterwinners, led by junior guard Jackie Yandrisevits. A returning first team All-PSAC East selection and the conference’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Yandrisevits will take on expanded responsibilities in the offense, a tall order for a player who has already led ESU in scoring (14.8

ppg in 2006-07) in each of her first two years. As the Warriors’ main scoring option, Yandrisevits will face the opponent’s best defender and constant double-teams, which will make it tougher to use her athleticism to get to the basket and create her own shot. Her new role may be that of playmaker and distributing the ball to other capable scorers, including senior forward Monika Fogelsanger and redshirt freshman forward Karla Cardona. Fogelsanger averaged seven points and six rebounds in each of her first two seasons before seeing a slight decline in production a year ago with the addition of Antolick, but still recorded career-high shooting percentages from the field (47.9) and the foul line (84.2) while logging the third-most minutes on the team. Cardona was the Lehigh Valley Conference MVP as a senior at Allen High School in 2005-06 before redshirting last season, and will be counted on as an immediate scoring threat in her first year on the floor. Yandrisevits will be joined in the backcourt by sophomore point guard Mel Villano, who averaged 3.4 points per game while starting all 29 games alongside Onofre as a freshman. Junior Keri Cahill will be the backup point guard and raises the energy level when she’s on the floor. She was also one of two guards with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (38-34) last season. Jhazmin Brown, last year’s PSAC East Rookie of the Year, and DeAnna Rayam give ESU a pair of athletic sophomore guards who made major contributions as freshmen. Rayam scored 7.8 ppg through the first 16 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury but has returned at full strength this fall. She ranks second behind Yandrisevits among the Warriors’ top returning scorers and is also ESU’s best perimeter defender. Brown is the third-leading returning scorer, averaging 6.9 ppg while shooting 49.4 percent from the floor

as a freshman, and was the second straight Warrior to earn conference Rookie of the Year honors. Sheila Gallagher and Brittany Lacey, two senior three-point specialists, are also expected to contribute on the wing. Lacey may see some minutes in the post as well due to a lack of numbers, as sophomore center Alexa Detzi is a candidate to redshirt following major knee surgery. Junior Shannon Simpson may also see time at forward for ESU. Guards Kristen Murray and Amanda Pavalko, who both come from district championship high school programs, are the top incoming freshmen for the Warriors. Murray is expected to replace some of the three-point shooting that was lost with the graduation of Antolick and Onofre, who both shot better than 40 percent from long distance last season. Pavalko has a strong reputation on the defensive end of the floor and is capable of making an immediate impact as a freshman. Point guard Phelan Livingston, forward Rachel Grimes and center Casey Stanton are also in their first year with the Warriors, and may have the opportunity to contribute as they adjust to the college game.

THE PSAC/HONOR ROLLPSAC Overview The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 56 years of orga-nized competition, has established itself as one of the most respected NCAA Division II athletic conferences. In its history the PSAC has laid claim to 38 NCAA team champions and 210 individual title winners, giving credence to its fine athletic tradi-

tion. The conference has prospered on the national level in recent years, as it annually has close to one-third of its teams participating in NCAA post-season competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself as the second largest Division II conference in terms of sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22 differ-ent sports. While proud of its athletic suc-cess, the league has also thrived in an academic sense. The number of stu-dent-athletes designated by the confer-

ence as “Scholar-Athletes” - those who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better - has increased nearly every year since that standard was adopted in 1995-96. The impressive number of yearly designees reached 1,420 in 2006-07. Furthermore, the most recent figure is nearly double the total of those in the mid-1990s and is almost one-third of the total student-athletes today. The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering men’s athletic programs within the 14 state teachers col-leges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the interest and growth of women’s athletics, the conference was restructured to pro-vide for women’s programs. From its inception, each conference member selected its own com-

petitive division within the NCAA. In 1980, however, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire conference to Division II. Although all 14 institu-tions are members of NCAA Division II, eight schools have also elected to compete at the Division I level in select sports. In 1983, all member institutions were granted university status as a result of Legislative Act 188, which formed Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The system now enrolls in excess of 109,000 stu-dents. The alumni of the State System is over 600,000, which includes roughly 405,000 Pennsylvanians. One of the largest conferences in the nation, the PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 14 member institutions. It employs a commis-sioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
