Picture Taking:When taking pictures of your graduate, please stay behind the ropes set up at either side of the platform. DO NOT occupy the center aisle for any reason during the ceremony.
Flowers for Your Graduate:You may purchase flowers for your graduate in the Field House lobby. Please give them to your graduate AFTER the ceremony. Graduates will not be allowed to carry flowers during the ceremony.
Safe Exit:Campus Safety is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our guests who will be leaving graduation and walking to their vehicles. The roadway in front of the Field House will be closed to vehicular traffic for one hour after graduation. Guests with limited mobility can be picked up on the north end of the roadway or directly west of the Field House entrance in the adjacent parking lot. They can also be picked up at the Administration Building entrance. It is the experience of staff that the roadways outside of campus will become gridlocked for an hour and a half after graduation ends. This is due to the major intersection of Highland Road and Port Washington Road and being unable to handle the large exodus of vehicles. Please be patient.
Thank you!

THE RESPONSIVE READING from Luke 1 P: Mary said, “My soul magnifies the LordC: and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,P: for He has looked on the humble estate of His servant.C: For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;P: for He who is mighty has done great things for me,C: and holy is His name .P: And his mercy is for those who fear Him C: from generation to generation .P: He has shown strength with His arm;C: He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;P: He has brought down the mighty from their thronesC: and exalted those of humble estate;P: He has filled the hungry with good things,C: and the rich He has sent away empty .P: He has helped his servant Israel,C: in remembrance of His mercy;P: as He spoke to our fathers,C: to Abraham and to His offspring forever .”All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever . THE HYMN OF PRAISE “Savior of the Nations, Come” Lutheran Service Book 332 (selected st.)
Savior of the nations, come; Virgin’s Son, make here your home!Marvel now, O heav’n and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth.
Here a maid was found with child, Yet remained a virgin mild.In her womb this truth was shown: God was there upon His throne.
God the Father was His source, Back to God He ran His course. Into hell His road went down, Back then to His throne and crown.
Glory to the Father sing, Glory to the Son, our king,Glory to the Spirit be Now and through eternity.
Please be seated

Lord, take my hand and lead me Upon life’s way;Direct, protect and feed me From day to day.Without your grace and favor I go astray; So take my hand, O Savior, And lead the way.
Lord, when the tempest rages, I need not fear; For you, the Rock of Ages, Are always near.Close by your side abiding, I fear no foe,For when your hand is guiding, In peace I go.
Lord, when the shadows lengthen And night has come,I know that you will strengthen My steps toward home,And nothing can impede me, O blessed Friend! So take my hand and lead me Unto the end.

ACADEMIC COSTUMES
Caps and gowns have been in use in the United States since colonial times, but it was not until 1895 that an Intercollegiate Code was prepared, regulating the design or pattern of the gowns and hoods and the colors and materials to be used.
The three types of gowns generally worn are made of black material. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves; the master’s is made with a long, closed sleeve and a slit for the arm. The doctor’s gown has a full, round, open sleeve. It is faced with velvet and has three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The black mortarboard style cap is worn for all degrees, but only doctors or presidents of institutions may wear a gold tassel.
The hood is the most important and distinctive feature of the academic costume. It enables anyone to distinguish at a glance the various ranks and at the same time recognize the university which has given the degree.
The doctor’s hood, of black cloth matching the gown, is four feet in length and made with a wide panel. The master’s and bachelor’s hoods are three and one-half and three feet in length, respectively. The hoods for all the degrees are lined with silk in the official academic color or colors of the institution which has conferred the degree. The colors are not necessarily the same as the school’s athletic colors, although in many cases they are. Many schools that use the same colors distinguish themselves by using different shades of that color. Where there is more than one official color, the chevron is used. Concordia’s colors are blue and white, so hoods will include those colors as well as the color of the major.
The binding or trim of all the hoods is velvet; two, three, and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s, doctor’s degrees respectively. The color of this velvet trim indicates the department of learning or faculty to which the degree pertains.
Apricot signifies nursing; brown – art; citron – social work; crimson/scarlet – communications; dark blue – philosophy; drab – business, management communications; gold – computer science, health care administration, justice and public policy/criminal justice, radiologic technology, science; lemon – library science; light blue – education; orange – engineering; pink – music; peacock – physical therapy; purple – paralegal; sage – athletic training, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical education; scarlet – theology; white – counseling, history, humanities, liberal arts, mathematics, psychology, student personnel administration; olive – pharmacy; kelly green – physician assistant.
GRADUATE HONORSA candidate who achieves a cumulative grade point average of 3.90 or better will graduate
SUMMA CUM LAUDE; one who achieves a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or better will graduate MAGNA CUM LAUDE; and one who achieves a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or better will graduate CUM LAUDE.
COMMENCEMENT SYMBOLSThe crucifix symbolizes the centrality of the Christian faith that informs CUW’s mission.
Accordingly, it leads the processional and recessional marches.
The mace served as a war club in medieval times, and later came to represent the protection and preservation of knowledge as universities explored ideas within and across many disciplines. CUW’s mace displays our four core values and the University seal. At CUW, we typically entrust the mace with the faculty chair, although at many institutions it is carried by the senior faculty member who represents the authority of the faculty to approve the granting of degrees.
Finally, the academic banners represent CUW’s six schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Health Professions, Nursing and Pharmacy. Each banner is carried by a faculty member or a student from that school.

THE CHAPEL OF CHRIST TRIUMPHANTBaccalaureate Service
December 16, 2017
Gifted by Grace, Prepared for His PurposeEphesians 2:8-10
How is a Baccalaureate service different from a graduation exercise? Quite simply the graduation or commencement exercise celebrates the fact that a student has completed all the academic work required in order to earn a certain degree. A baccalaureate service celebrates the calling of God in that person’s life into a specific vocation. You will notice that not all the vocations celebrated today are professional church vocations. They are, however, all Christian vocations. During our service today, the hymns and the Scripture readings celebrate the fact that God in his grace is calling these women and men into his service as nurses, social workers, teachers and lay ministers. Our prayer of thanksgiving is that they joyfully hear God’s call in their life, confident that His plans for them are good plans.

THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates” Lutheran Service Book (LSB) 341
Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates! Behold, the King of glory waits. The King of kings is drawing near; the Savior of the world is here. Life and salvation He doth bring; therefore rejoice and gladly sing. To God the Father raise your joyful songs of praise.
A righteous Helper comes to thee; His chariot is humility, His kingly crown is holiness, His scepter, pity in distress. The end of all our woe He brings; therefore the earth is glad and sings: To Christ the Savior raise your grateful hymns of praise.
How blest the land, the city blest, where Christ the Ruler is confessed! O peaceful hearts and happy homes to whom this King in triumph comes! The cloudless sun of joy is He who comes to set His people free. To God the Spirit raise your happy shouts of praise.
Fling wide the portals of your heart; make it a temple set apart From earthly use for heav’n’s employ, adorned with prayer and love and joy. So shall your Sov’reign enter in and new and nobler life begin. To God alone be praise for word and deed and grace!
Redeemer, come and open wide my heart to Thee; here, Lord, abide! O enter with Thy grace divine; thy face of mercy on me shine. Thy Holy Spirit guide us on until our glorious goal is won. Eternal praise and fame we offer to Thy name.

THE CANTICLE: “We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God” LSB 941~ a versification of the Te Deum laudamus ~
We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord,The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored. To you all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing,The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring:“O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!”
The band of the apostles in glory sing Your praise; The fellowship of prophets their deathless voices raise. The martyrs of your kingdom, a great and noble throng,Sing with the holy Church throughout all the world this song“O all majestic Father, Your true and only Son,And Holy Spirit, Comforter—forever Three in One!”
You, Christ, are King of glory, the everlasting Son,Yet You, with boundless love, sought to rescue ev’ry one:You laid aside Your glory, were born of virgin’s womb,Were crucified for us and were placed into a tomb; Then by Your resurrection You won for us reprieve—You opened heaven’s kingdom to all who would believe.
You sit in splendid glory, enthroned at God’s right hand,Upholding earth and heaven by forces You command. We know that You will come as our Judge that final day,So help Your servants You have redeemed by blood, we pray;May we with saints be numbered where praises never end,In glory everlasting. Amen, O Lord, Amen!
