The weekly arrests include; two males who were arrested for using the ski lifts at Cardrona without lift passes, two males for driving while under the influence of alcohol and another male for breaching the liquor ban. A male tourist came to the Wanaka Police Station stating his bag containing various expensive items had been stolen from the cafe area at one of the ski fields. The Police Officer dealing with the young man sensed the male was telling porky pies and a consensual search of his accommodation located the 'stolen' items. The male was charged with making a false statement, appeared in Court and was fined $1000 by the judge.
We are still taking a lot of stolen property reports. Here is a snap shot of the types of crimes being committed; good quality skis stolen from an open garage while the owners were home, unlocked skis stolen from racks at the ski fields and day packs containing money, identification etc. Vehicles are also being targeted and on two occasions ski gear has been taken. One locked vehicle parked at Glendu Bay had a window smashed and two snow boards taken and the owners were only gone for an hours walk.
As was mentioned last week, if you have to leave valuables behind, whether they are in your house/room etc or your vehicle - make sure you lock it, close windows and hide expensive items. And don't forget about the items that you leave outside your vehicle. - Police keep seeing people parking their vehicles around town, trustingly leaving snowboards and skis just sitting on racks; you're an easy target for thieves and vandals.
A couple of weeks ago we wrote about a driver and suspicious vehicle seen around letter boxes in the Halliday Road area. A registered mail item delivered on the 06/05/11 has been taken. To the person responsible please show some decency and return it, the package contained an orthopaedic shoe that the recipient has waited two years for and now has to find the funds to replace. Any information regarding this theft please contact Police on 443 7272.
It's nice to see some little lambs popping up on the farms - a reminder that spring is on its way. HOWEVER for all you dog owners, especially out Lake Hawea, Hawea Flat way, we have had several reports of residential dogs wandering the area, roaming onto farm land. Please control your dogs and make sure that they aren't bothering stock - worst case scenario if your dog is found to be eating lamb the farmer has the authority to shoot them - so keep your rovers from roving!
Lastly the boss asked me to remind all that we are currently running a road safety campaign focusing on the wearing of seat belts and driver behaviour around intersections, so don't be surprised to see us out and about monitoring both.
