Dear Friends Thank you all for the wonderful welcome you have given us, I feel very privileged to be your new Priest in Charge and excited about all that God will do amongst us. The Licensing service on 14th May at Thornthwaite was very special and memorable; it was so lovely to share together with friends old and new. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the delicious buffet that followed at the Braithwaite Institute. It is good to get together and it’s good to share food together. As we do that, we share our lives with one another and that’s what builds a thriving community. This June there will be another opportunity to do that on Sunday 18th at the BIG LUNCH. Mia Ambrose and Claire Grant are heading up the organization of the event to be held at Braithwaite institute, you may have seen the flyers de-livered around the villages. As a church we will be joining in and it will be a great opportunity for me to meet a wider group of people. So do come along, bring a dish to share and don’t miss out. Other opportunities to meet and eat are happening regularly – there is the Village lunch group enjoying a meal together at noon every Wednesday at the Coledale Inn in Braithwaite. The Parish lunch at St. Herbert’s, Braithwaite every third Sunday in the month. There are monthly Coffee Mornings in Thornthwaite and Coffee and Chat at St Herbert’s. Things happen when people get together. We are just about to celebrate Pentecost (4th June), often thought of as the birthday of the Church. Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples were to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. Luke tells us that they were all together in one place on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came like wind and like fire and changed them into strong and confident witnesses, the founder members of the Church. Things happen when people get together, to share a meal, to meet for a chat, to come to worship God. I look forward to meeting up with you and being part of the community in this very special and beautiful part of God’s kingdom. With every blessing Judith

Over sixty people attended the service of welcome to Judith. The Bishop licensed Judith into the spiritualities of the parish which includes the responsibility to perform divine service, occasional offices, preach, teach and hold the cure of souls (pastoral care). The ‘installation‘ is used to describe the purely symbolic act of placing a new pastor in their stall and was carried out by the Archdeacon. Bishop Robert spoke movingly about the cure of souls (with an obligatory medical joke) and the congregation were deafening in their positive response when asked whether they welcomed Judith! Blessing from the service: Let us ask God to bless Judith, to give her joy in her home and family life and in her ministry, and to renew within her the gifts of his Spirit. Amen.

The Bishop of Penrith, the Right Revd. Robert Freeman, Revd. Judith Ashurst and the Archdeacon of West Cumberland, the Venerable Richard Pratt outside St. Mary’s, Thornthwaite after the Licensing & Installation Service on Sunday, 14th May.

Renovation Work at St. Mary's

The Faculty for all the work previously outlined was submitted to the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) in March and enthusiastically approved by them. The Faculty notice was duly received from the Diocesan Registrar in early May and, as is required, was put on display at the church for the 4 week period during which any objections may be lodged. That period finishes on June 4th at which time the notice will be taken down and returned to the Registrar. On the basis that no objections are raised, the faculty will be given approval quite soon after that date. Meanwhile we are working with the Architect to identify suitable and capable contractors to do the work and expect to be in a position to set the contract(s) as soon as possible after formal approval. We currently expect work to commence within 2-3 months and for this first phase to be substantially complete within a further 3 months. As with previous work at St. Mary's this work will be funded by the resources of the Jessie Agnes Pearson Trust for which we continue to be extremely grateful. Further news about timing of the work and probable dates when the church will be closed for worship will be communicated both by this magazine and also by notices placed at the church as soon as these dates become clear.

New Parish Web Site I’ve put together a new web site for the parish (www.tbnchurches.net). I will work hard to keep it up to date with news and events, drawing on input from others. I’ve got more work to do to add content and create links to and from other sites. Please have a look and see what you think. Any feedback or new ideas are welcome – perhaps use the comment form on the ‘Get in Touch’ page. Try and have a look each week for news and new content. At the bottom of a page you have the option to ‘Follow blog via email’ if you complete this you will get an email when new content goes on the site – you can then change your preferences, so for example you get a maximum of one email a day. I’ve used a template from wordpress.com to create the site, which means the costs are very low and not much technical skill is required which is good, but it also means that flexibility and functionality is limited. The site makes use of a Google calendar, which you can see in the ‘What’s On’ page. I’m also trying Facebook, see @tbnchurches – but it's a big learning curve as I’ve not used it before (any advice is welcome). For the moment, the web site is primarily focused on the churches. I know we haven’t got village / community web sites and if anyone would like to discuss that and see what we might do please get in touch. Colin Ashurst [email protected]

Many congratulations to Alan & Sylvia Williams who celebrated their Golden wedding in March and to Colin & Sue Grant who celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary on 3rd June. May God continue to bless you all.

Be a Life Saver

Has anyone ever said to you – ‘you’re a life saver!’ How would you feel if it was liter-ally true and you had saved a life? At the annual electors meeting of Above Derwent Parish Council (19th April at Braithwaite Institute) there was a talk and demonstration by Lauren Watson from North West Ambulance Service. Approx 100,000 people die in the UK every year from cardiac arrest. The survival rate is only 4% (12% here in Cumbria!). The chances of survival are dramatically improved by CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) being given very quickly. Cardiac arrest, heart failure means the heart stops pumping blood, the person is dead. It’s different from a ‘heart attack’ – which involves chest pains. The response to cardiac arrest should be CPR - starting chest compressions – push hard, twice a second. Start and don’t stop. You’ve probably seen it on Casualty or some other TV programme. Mouth to mouth resuscitation is out, just chest compressions as a first step. If possible get someone else to ring 999 straight away and get an ambulance on the way urgently. The call handler will check out what the problem is and tell you where the nearest defibrillator is. Very soon we’ll have 4 located round the area. Lauren took us through a demo of using the defibrillator – the machine talks you through it so nothing to worry about. As she said the person is dead – you can’t make it any worse, you might just bring them back to life. Then the second person should be ready to help guide the ambulance to the right spot when it arrives – a post code can be a big place in a small village. So learn how to do CPR. 4 lives in Cumbria had been saved already this April by the time of the council meeting. See the video on youtube by Lauren and friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DtqvUoPPU8 First Responders We also learnt about First Responders. The ambulance service needs more First Responders to be on call as volunteers. They provide excellent training and then you can make a real difference by providing a quick response in the local area. We urgently need more First Responders in our area. Current coverage is very poor. Find out more or apply:

There were 18 people at the church cleaning day on 12th April. Lots of thing got done in both church and schoolroom, and there was plenty chat, plenty pies and plenty peas, so a good time was had by all. The only slight downside was that it was a bit wet so things didn’t get done outside on the day, but the windows have now been cleaned, the fallen slate is back on the roof, and the fallen section of churchyard wall is re-built. Many thanks to everyone involved. You can find details about the open garden at High Moss, Portinscale on Sunday afternoon 11th June below. High Moss is an extensive and really interesting garden, and well worth a visit. Do come if you can, for a pleasant afternoon and to support Friends of Newlands church. Along with everyone else we are delighted that Judith is now officially our Priest in Charge, we look forward to her ministry amongst us, and pray that the Lord will bless and guide her in all she does.

PE & SPORTS AT BRAITHWAITE SCHOOL Braithwaite pupils are always looking for new ways to get active and stay fit. We have a number of sports coaches visit our school offering specialist tuition. At the current time there are coaches working with Year 1 & 2 pupils teaching tennis, Year 3 & 4 on cricket and Year 5 & 6 on football; this is in addition to Alan Gray’s excellent rugby coaching which all pupils from Year 1 to 6 will ben-efit from this term. Our range of after school clubs is also expanding and this term we have Yoga and Football on offer once a week. Pupils are also taking part Active Cumbria’s 100 mile challenge which challenges pupils to keep track of the walking, running and biking they take part in to work towards a 100 mile target, which a number of our pupils have already achieved. Year 5 & 6 pupils are starting on a unique and carefully planned programme of outdoor and adventurous activities this week (following their hard work in SATs over the last few weeks). The main focus this year is on climbing, to complement last year’s sailing activities. They begin with a fell walk up Catbells and then have 2 indoor climbing sessions, before heading out to apply their skills on a suitable crag. This is followed by a ghyll scrambling session and finally a visit to Jump Mania in the final week of term. We hope everyone will learn some new skills and build their resilience but someone may find they have a real talent that they can develop further in the future.

Class 3 have been busy with the National Trust ranger, Roy Henderson, looking at the impact of flooding in the village and what has been done since to repair and prevent flood damage. They also had a Rivers Day recently with West Cumbria Rivers Trust. Becca from the trust came and spent a day in school talking about rivers and con-ducting experiments before the children went out to Coledale Beck for the following day. The spent time conducting surveys of wildlife, enjoying a photo treasure hunt, mapping the river and creating Andy Goldsworthy style sculptures with natural materials.

ThornThwaiTe’ news

Thornthwaite has recently been inundated with a lot of traffic because drivers have diverted through the village to avoid waiting at lights on the A66. There have been many reports of dangerous driving due to the high speeds drivers are reaching when they pass from the A66, through the village and beyond making it dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. It is only a matter of time before there is an accident, especially as there have been reported incidents of drivers overtaking on blind bends. Therefore, the Parish Council contacted the Police, who came to monitor the situation and caught people speeding whilst they were here. Since that time a community speed watch group has been set up by volunteer residents, with backing from the police. Training in the use of the speed gun, and all the procedures associated with it, has been carried out by Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's). At the time of writing this report, the speed watch has been in operation for one week, and has already recorded more than 100 people who were exceeding the 30 mph speed limit, some by a significant margin. Fourteen people have received training in the use the speed gun. Further training ses-sions will be arranged in the near future and if anyone would like to volunteer, please contact Richard Kealey on 017687 78085. A rota of times and people involved will short-ly be produced. It is preferable to have three people doing the watch at any one time as there is the task of operating the gun, recording registration numbers, and the make and colour of the car, not an easy task when a vehicle is passing at 60 mph! We are grateful for the support and help given by the police.

Carole's Osprey report. It is great news that the Ospreys have again chosen to use the nest in Thornthwaite, and there are now three eggs. We look forward to hearing news of the new arrivals. Information and viewing of the birds are again in progress at Whinlatter. There is now a different arrangement of the space within the centre and new cameras have been installed around the nest ...so the pictures of the birds are excellent. Do visit Whinlatter as the cafe is much enlarged and now spacious, and the forestry have a small but interesting shop for books and gifts.

Christian Values By Emellia, Mia and Hattie

At Braithwaite CE Primary School, Christian Values are at the heart of everything we do. Our school motto is ‘Learning Together; Growing Together’ and we try to do that by following the examples set by Jesus. Learning about Christian values can help us understand ourselves and other people. So far this year, we have learnt about: love, trust, hope, forgiveness and friendship. One of the things that we do at school is take part in a daily act of worship. Often, the chil-dren in our Collective Worship group lead the assembly by acting, showing a PowerPoint, telling a story or saying a prayer. We practise a story, which has a Christian value to it, for a couple of weeks. When we are ready, we perform it to the whole school. To make sure it’s fair, we change the people in the group each half term. This allows everyone a chance to participate, if they want to.

Joanna was a lovely young woman, I’d known her since she was a teenager who used to babysit for us, with her then boyfriend, David. I watched her grow into a terrific wife and mother as she married David and had their children, Joe and Alice. If you were lucky to know Joanna then you will know how warm and welcoming she could be, she loved to talk with you. Revd. Stuart Penny in her funeral address said that he often went into the cheese shop where she worked, not for cheese, but to talk to Joanna! She embraced life and had lots of interests, including cooking at which she excelled. She was infamous for her handbag collection! She enjoyed having new experiences and really raved about her taster sessions, sailing on Bass Lake. Gardens up and down the country will be sprouting sunflowers after each of the 450 mourners at her funeral were given a pot containing a sunflower seed to nurture in her memory. Chris Lewis

Between 25th May and 4th June, communities and churches around the world are gathering together

to pray for their friends, families and neighbours and for the wider world.

Our churches in Thornthwaite, Braithwaite and Newlands are always open for prayer, but during these 10 days, there is a special invitation to make time to pray.

There will be ideas for prayer available at all three churches, and prayer activity stations suitable for all ages at St Herbert’s, Braithwaite.

Sometimes, all it takes is just

ONE PRAYER

to change everything.

Psalm 11

1 In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain.

2 For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.

3 When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them.

5 The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.

6 On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulphur; a scorching wind will be their lot.

7 For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face.
