Interest in Purchasing Local Foods by Maryland Schools
From 2009 to2010, a collaboration of researchers and Extension specialists developed a study to examine the supply chain for local foods in Maryland school meals, investigate the barriers and opportunities for increasing local foods in schools, and develop outreach programs to meet the needs identified, with an eye towards improving farmer incomes. Interviews and surveys were administered with stakeholders from the entire supply chain, including farmers, distributors, food service directors, and school principals.
This list is a product of that research and includes the schools that noted they were either interested in starting to purchase different types of local foods, or interested in continuing to purchase local foods. All schools reported here agreed to be listed in this brochure during a survey.
Local foods in this project were defined as those grown in Maryland or adjacent states. This brochure includes product lists by vegetable, fruit, and meat and dairy products and those schools interested in starting to purchase or continue purchasing these products. Schools are listed at the end of this brochure, with relevant information about them (including County information, enrollment information, and meals served).
