The CO2 footprint certifi ed by TÜV Rheinland proves that wood is far su-perior to other construction materials with regard to the climate balance. van Roje sawmill is thus the fi rst in the in-dustry to present a specifi ed Product Carbon Footprint according to ISO standard 14044.

The company van Roje places high emphasis on an environmentally friendly and resource effi cient production. Their investments of the past years in environment protection and energy effi ciency es-pecially demonstrated such commitment. More than 73,500 t of CO2 are thus avoided every year by a:

• pellet plant with a capacity of 45,000 t/p.a. (corresponds to 59,940 t CO2 equivalents)

• biomass heating plant with a performance of 10 MW and a total annual power generation of 50,000 MWh (13,320 t CO2-equivalents)

• solar power plant with a performance of 600 kW and a total annual power generation of 500,000 MWh (281 t CO2-equivalents)

From harvesting and transportation of the raw material, to the manufacturing process up to the dispatch of the fi nished product, all processing steps undergo regular evaluation and optimiza-tion in regard of energy effi ciency and impact on the environment. The company proves its responsible treatment of resources with the ac-cording documentation and the certifi cation of its products and processes. For example, the pro-cessed wood is exclusively from sustainable and eco-friendly forests with PEFC and FSC certifi ca-tion, the power effi ciency is documented accor-

ding to a TÜV certified energy management system, and the monitoring, evaluation and approval of the internal production control according to EN 14081-1, is subject to regu-lar verification by the Frauenhofer Institute for Wood Research. In order to expand the documentation by a statement on the product’s impact on the environment, the Product Carbon Foot-print (PCF) balance sheet for sawn wood was drafted.

All greenhouse gas emissions from sawn timber have been identified. Supporting of emissions starts at the point of exploration and delivery of the trunk wood coming from sustainable forests in Rhineland Palatinate, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia as well as from adjacent Länder and EU countries. The transport of the raw material is calculated too in compliance with the system. After delivery, the logs are scanned, measured, debarked and cut according to orders. More than half of the quantity is then processed on site. The subsequent wood processing is considered as well and therefore the Product Carbon Footprint applies to all sawn timber from I. van Roje & Sohn. In the production process, the use of thermal and electric power as well

as the fuel consumption for internal trans-portation causes emissions.

The accounting of greenhouse gas emis-sions covers the consumed quantities of wood, water, lubricants, impregnating agents, electricity, process heat and the consumed fuel under the given system. The emissions are only considered at the end of the production process (product ex works), which means neither the emissions from the later use of the lumber nor its disposal are included. Based on the production process, the total emission is broken down into dif-ferent emission stages created by the ma-terials used, the processing and transport routes with consideration of the power and fuel consumption.

In conclusion it should be assumed that the production of 1m³ sawn lumber by I. van Roje & Sohn. KG does not create more CO2-emissions than

36,28kg CO2

revealed by the accounting2

Any CO2 absorbed by the wood itself was not considered within the scope of emission accounting. 1m³ spruce wood sequesters on average 752 kg CO2. 3
