The Department of Music at The University of Texas at San Antonio has emerged as one of the premiere music schools in the state of Texas. Our programs are outstanding, innovative, unique, and competitive. With approximately three hundred undergraduate and graduate music majors, the department is small enough to offer personalized attention from faculty and staff, however is large enough to offer a complete curriculum with eleven major ensembles, numerous chamber ensembles, and more than two hundred concerts, recitals, master classes, and workshops every year. The UTSA Marching Band, which began in 2011 served as our sixteenth musical ensemble.

With degrees specializing in music performance, education, marketing, and composition, the opportunities for students are as limitless as their imaginations. Under the direction of our award-winning faculty, UTSA graduates have realized their dreams and gone on to become successful musical educators, performers, degree recipients at some of the country’s top graduate schools, as well as top honors winners in prestigious competitions.

The City of San AntonioSan Antonio is the 7th largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States. UTSA allows students access to the rich musical culture of the community and a wide variety of music events and festivals to enjoy and participate in each year. Nestled on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, students have wonderful opportunities to experience and create music at UTSA.

Our faculty and students are involved in the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Opera, Mastersinger's, San Antonio Choral Society, San Antonio Wind Symphony, Voci di Sorelle, the Cactus Pear Music Festival, Camerata San Antonio, and countless other organizations.

Page 5: The UTSA Department of Music

The Bachelor of Music in Performance degree offers training in the masterpieces of music literature, with a focus on both performance and pedagogy. Students receive intensive private lesson study with artist-faculty and perform in solo recitals, chamber ensembles and large ensembles. Graduates pursue careers as soloist, members of chamber or large ensembles, accompanist, church musicians, and private studio teachers.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Studies degree certifies students to teach elementary, middle, and high school music courses. Students develop a foundation of musical knowledge and a broad set of teaching skills including conducting, repertoire selection, learning theories, student assessment, and lesson planning. Nearly 100% of our graduates have obtained a public school educational career.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition degree offers students the opportunity to develop their individual voices as composers as they acquire the skills needed to write original music in a variety of genres. Students explore many different compositional styles and techniques while writing for both traditional and contemporary instruments. The capstone experience of this degree is a public recital of the student’s own original compositions.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Marketing degree combines both the studies of music and the study of business. Graduates are prepared to work in professions such as arts administration, talent management, non-profit arts organizations, music industry, music publishing, music merchandising, as well as public relations and marketing.

The minimum number of semester credit hours required for this degree, including the Core Curriculum requirements, is 131 in the Music Performance concentration, 130 in the Composition concentration, 130 in the Music Marketing concentration, and 129 in the Music Studies concentration.

Undergraduates seeking elementary teacher certification must complete the interdisciplinary studies degree.

BANDS

UTSA WIND ENSEMBLEThe UTSA Wind Ensemble is comprised of UTSA Students who have achieved an extreme high level of musicianship and who perform some of the most challenging music composed for wind band.  Membership in this ensemble is open to all UTSA Students, regardless of Major, who audition at the beginning of each semester.

The UTSA Wind Ensemble has been under the direction of Dr. Robert Rustowicz since it’s inception in 1976 and maintains vigorous performance schedule of 3 demanding concerts each semester as well as an ensemble tour when budgeting and schedule permits. As of fall 2013, Ron Ellis will serve as the new conductor for the UTSA Wind Ensemble, as well as Director of Bands.

UTSA SYMPHONIC BAND The UTSA Symphonic Band is made up of 55-60 outstanding wind players who perform a repertoire chosen from a variety of historical periods and for ensembles of various sizes. While the group occasionally presents pieces composed for smaller groups, much of its time is spent in the study and performance of works from the standard symphonic band repertoire.

Additionally, the UTSA Symphonic Band is active in commissioning world-renowned composers for premiers on the UTSA campus. Membership is open to all students at the university who audition at the beginning of each semester.  As with every ensemble group at UTSA, professionalism in performance quality and attitude is always emphasized, as these crucial elements of musicianship will serve to benefit students as they enter the world as a performer, educator or other professional.

UTSA UNIVERSITY BANDThe UTSA University Band is under the direction of Dr. Donald Miller. This ensemble performs a wide variety of works  covering a wide variety of composers and arrangers and maintains an aggressive 3 concert schedule each semester.Membership is comprised of both music majors and many whose major is something other than music. Auditions are not required for this ensemble.

UTSA MARCHING BAND The “Spirit of San Antonio,” like all college bands, is comprised of students who have been members of championship high school bands as well as students whose high school didn't even have a Marching Band. This diversity of backgrounds makes it difficult to compare college with high school. However, the talent level and maturity of college band members allow them to perform at a high level during a shortened rehearsal schedule. The “Spirit of San Antonio” will perform a standard pre-game show, 4-5 different halftime shows, play lots of stand tunes, maintain UTSA traditions, while at the same time promoting a positive learning and social environment for its members. College bands strive towards being fun and spirited organizations while still achieving a quality of performance representative of the image of our great University regardless of performance venue. The Rowdy Roadrunner Pep Band is offered during the Spring.

In addition to coursework, master classes and performances, students have a unique opportunity to hear some of the best guitarist from around the world through the Southwest Guitar Festival. The festival, which takes place every two years, is hosted by UTSA and first competition included students from the United States, France, Australia, and Nicaragua.
