The winning bidder was former New Hampshire U.S. Senate candidate Bill Binnie who will spin off 13 stations to longtime broadcast station owner Jeff Shapiro. Of the ten Nassau stations in Vermont, Shapiro will own eight while Binnie will own two. Most of the stations were once part of the VOX group that Shapiro and others sold to Nassau in 2004 for $31 million. Shapiro already owns Great East- ern Broadcasting which operates WKKN-FM in Westminster, VT and WMXR-FM in Woodstock, VT. The group also owns New Hampshire-licensed sta- tions WTPL-FM in Hillsborough, WEEY- FM in Swanzey, WTSL-AM in Hanover, WGXL-FM in Hanover and WXXK-FM in Lebanon. Under a new entity, Vertical Capital Partners, Shapiro will own Vermont sta- tions WMOO-FM in Derby, WIKE-AM in Newport, WSNO-AM and WORK-FM in Barre, WWFY-FM in Berlin, WWOD-FM in Hartford, WEXP-FM in Brandon and WTHK-FM in Wilmington. In addition, Shapiro’s group will also take own- ership of New Hampshire sta- tions WTSV-AM and WHDQ-FM in Claremont, WFYX -FM in Walpole, WWHQ-FM in Meredith and WLKZ-FM in Wolfeboro. Binnie, who already owns WBIN-TV in Derry, will pick up two Vermont-licensed stations, WXLF-FM in Hartford and WZLF-FM in Bellows Falls. As part of the deal, Binnie’s WBIN Media Compa- ny will also own six other New Hamp- shire stations and nine stations in southern Maine. It is not yet known when the deals will close or when the stations will officially change hands. KEVIN OHL 1960 - 2012 Longtime Vermont radio per- sonality Kevin Ohl passed away May 29 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burling- ton after a long and coura- geous battle with acute leu- kemia. He was 51. A native of Essex Junction, Kevin tried his hand in Holly- wood for a brief time, but re- turned to Vermont where he worked as a disc jockey at WQCR-FM (which became WOKO-FM while he was there) in Burlington. He later served as the morning man on WVMX-FM in Stowe (now WCVT-FM). Afterwards, he worked for WKDR-AM in Bur- lington, where he was a long- time contributor and produc- er of “The Manno and Con- don Show.” Kevin was also the producer of “The Mark Johnson Show.” His quick wit and his concern for others will not be forgot- ten by his many friends. He is survived by his parents and a sister and her family. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on June 9 at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home at 9 Pleasant St. in Essex Junction. Dress is casual and Hawaiian shirts are encouraged. NASCAR HONORS SQUIER WITH NEW AWARD Leave it to WDEV’s Ken Squier to win an award named, in part, for him. NASCAR has announced the creation of a new award to honor the contributions of media to the sport’s success. The award will bear the names of the first two winners, Squier and fellow broadcast- er Barney Hall, and will be called the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence. BINNIE, SHAPIRO GET NASSAU’S VT-NH STATIONS

Last week, creditors approved a bid of

$12.5 million for thirty Nassau Broad-

casting stations in northern New Eng-

land, including ten here in Vermont.

The winning bidder was former New

A native of Essex Junction,

Kevin tried his hand in Holly-

wood for a brief time, but re-

turned to Vermont where he

NASCAR HONORS SQUIER WITH NEW AWARD

Leave it to WDEV’s Ken Squier to win an award named, in part, for

him. NASCAR has announced the creation of a new award to honor

the contributions of media to the sport’s success. The award will

bear the names of the first two winners, Squier and fellow broadcast-

er Barney Hall, and will be called the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR

Media Excellence. Squier helped popularize NASCAR with his

work on MRN, CBS, TBS and the SPEED network. Congrats, Ken!

IDEAS, FOOD AND FUN AT THE 57th VAB CONVENTION An impressive contingent of Vermont broadcasters filled the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier May 17th for the 57th annual VAB Convention.

They were there to see old friends, get new ideas for sales and programming success and enjoy great food during the Commercial of the Year Awards luncheon.

Seminars were given by Mark Levy, Karen Travis and John Lund. David Oxenford and Scott Goodwin held a political advertising refresher course.

Gov. Peter Shumlin was on hand to address the group and praised the state’s broadcasters for their coverage of Tropical Storm Irene.

Montpelier radio station WNCS-FM (“The Point”) and Colches-ter-based advertising agency Mt. Mansfield Media were the winners of the Radio and Television Best in Show prizes an-nounced May 17 at the Vermont Association of Broadcasters Commercial of the Year Awards luncheon.

WNCS won the Radio Best in Show award for “Toilet Talk,” a commercial they wrote and produced for Blodgett Supply. Mt. Mansfield Media won the Television Best in Show award for “Birds,” a commercial for Guy’s Farm and Yard Stores.

More than 200 entries were received for the annual competition among Vermont’s radio and television stations and Vermont advertising agencies. The entries were judged by a panel as-sembled by the Communications Department at Champlain College in Burlington.
