Positive attitudes – and how to get them! Creating a truly safe working environment is more than just mitigating physical risk. Safety is essentially about people; their choices, behaviours and attitudes. A positive working environment is undoubtedly a safer, and better place to work. There is a lot of advice on developing positive work cultures – these are our top five tips.

• Respect – ensure everyone feels valued for who they are and what they contribute.

• Engage and include - make sure everyone understands the company’s goals as well as policies.

• Listen - to everyone’s concerns and to everyone’s ideas

• Encourage – share knowledge, provide training and up-skilling opportunities, and give constructive feedback.

• Trust – show you believe in your team.

News around the worldExclusion zones on a much larger scale

The largest warehouse in the world is the Boeing warehouse in Everett, Washington. It is 400,000m2, that’s the size of 40 rugby fields, or eight Westpac Stadiums! There are more than 30,000 employees, and the factory runs 24/7.

The factory has 19 cafes, a medical centre, its own police force, a bank, a day care and even a teeth whitening clinic!

There are 3.7km of underground pedestrian tunnels that allow workers to move around the facility. Wonder how they manage all their exclusion zones..!

On track with KiwiRailAs part of their core values to care and protect their staff and visitors, KiwiRail is committed to making sure that people and trains are safe when working in the same environment.

KiwiRail chose Vanguard for their reputation on previous projects, knowing they not only had an extensive range of fit for purpose products, but also advice that would give them peace of mind.

To execute the desired control measures for this site, Vanguard advised on the best use of space when it came to the walkways and the most appropriate products to create the separation required. The implementation of a Walksafe Hand Rail System allowed separation of pedestrians and hazardous areas, whilst the Walksafe Self Closing Gates ensured there was controlled access and the gate was always in the closed position. An Expandable Barrier gave staff the flexibility to prevent unauthorised access, or allow free flowing traffic for operational effectiveness.

Celebrating Vanguard AnniversariesCongratulations to Gina, Josh and Ange, who have recently celebrated their Vanguard Anniversaries!

Gina, one of our Internal Sales Consultants, has been at Vanguard for 9 years, Ange, our Financial Controller, has been at Vanguard for 3 years and Josh our Warehouse Manager also celebrated 3 years!

Congratulations you three, we wouldn’t be where we are today without you!

The double Walksafe Self Closing Gates, control pedestrian access to hazardous areas.

The Walksafe Handrail System, ensured a clear delineation barrier between areas.

The Expanding Barrier system allows flexibility with areas that needed to be accessed occasionally, but still needed to be blocked off.

The vast Seeka Oakside, Te Puke, is Seeka’s largest post-harvest kiwifruit packhouse and coolstore facility. New Zealand’s premier produce company, Seeka has a “Safety Always” approach to protecting its workforce of several thousand.

They asked long-time advisors Vanguard when they needed a solution on-site. The result was the early-adopters becoming the first in New Zealand to deploy d-flexx, a new generation flexible barrier for pack houses, warehouses and work sites.

Revolutionary d-flexx absorbs contact impact, protecting people, vehicles and the barriers themselves in a way no other material can.

Paul Crone Post-Harvest Manager for the Central Region for Seeka takes up the story. “ We identified a few areas of risk that we needed to address, particularly around traffic management around the site. We had areas where we needed barriers put in place, to control the flow of people to make sure that we kept them in safe zones.”

“As we are a big site, we have a lot going on, a lot of forklifts moving around so it was important to keep people restricted and basically to keep them apart from where those moving forklifts are.”

He had complete confidence in the ability of Vanguard and their products to step up.

Vanguard scoped Seeka’s problem areas, came up with a solution, and delivered a visual mock-up.

The d-flexx lasts longer, is a lot stronger and safer to use, meaning Seeka will not have the repair bills they usually would with a steel system.

Implementing the Vanguard Solution has allowed Seeka to move people around the site safely, out of the line of forklifts and forklift drivers.

Because d-flexx absorbs the impact of any contact, neither the people, nor the vehicles come to any harm. Steel is less forgiving, with any impact

not only damaging the barrier but often requiring it to be replaced.

One of NZ’s largest manufacturers faced a real safety challenge on site with vehicles speeding through a pedestrian crossing.

After a site visit, by one of Vanguard’s consultants , we came up with ways to help keep staff

and visitors safer, and drivers more attentive. Our bolt-down rubber pedestrian crossing was installed to improve visibility. Then, to further protect people using the crossing, we installed a strategically located speed bump and a self-closing pedestrian gate. Pedestrians have

to pause to pull the gate open before crossing, helping keep them focussed on any approaching vehicles.

The below products were used in this project along with our Consultants advice.

Vanguard recently renewed our commitment to Life Flight a charity providing emergency air services.

Ambulance planes are called out on life-saving missions an average of four times per day. Supporters of Life Flight ensure that emergency air services remain available 24/7 and provide the best possible outcomes for patients.

For many of the 27,000 people helped by Life Flight the emergency flight and urgent medical care saved their life. For others, it dramatically improved their chance of survival and recovery. Visit lifeflight.org.nz to check them out.

Thank you for supporting us – we’re passing it on!
