Making the Christmas Basket Project Possible

How does it all happen? Some members work diligently behind the scenes and put in many hours to make this project possible. Starting in September, the committee meets to lay out plans. Then weeks of contacting schools for lists of families in need, food planning and ordering,

calling families to schedule delivery time, sometimes 2 –3 times, then pickup, loading, unloading, and set up of food. Continued on page 6

Attending: Jeff and Gina McCutcheon, Jeff’s parents, Walt and Nancy Jenkins, Lorren and Laurie Loewen, Roger Miller and Roger Jr., and Larry and Gwenda Valentine Between storms, the Denver Corvette Association held the last sanctioned event for 2015 Sunday November 22. Registration at Lora’s Doughnuts left plenty of time for coffee and, you guessed it, glazed doughnuts. The rally ended at Lowry’s Beer Garden in time for the second quarter of the Bronco game. Fortunately, it was worth staying around for the winning finish.

Festival of Lights Parade

Yes, there was a parade. No snow, no rain, and no wind. The streets were dry and it was about 40 degrees. It was a beautiful December night for a parade. And yes, there was a Corvette. Wayne in his Santa hat, and Susan Umland committed to drive in the parade and braved the storm, or lack thereof, with a host of lights and enthusiasm.

The Umland Parade

Adventure

Tip/warning for the C7

I was chatting with Walt and mentioned that I saw LEDs for the C7 hood, and front wheel vents. Walt suggested that I grow up. I thought - Oh, now I have to put them on. The Parade of Light is coming up, so the timing is good, and I found LEDs for the front grill as well. I had finished up this project when the incident happened. From the owner’s manual …”Hill Start Assist (HSA) HSA is an automatic feature activated when the vehicle is stopped on a grade. This feature is designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling, either forward or rearward, during vehicle drive off. . ." I've discovered that the HSA releases after, roughly, a couple of seconds. I wanted to put the car into the garage. There was a tool in the way, so I jumped out the car and took about 3 steps, when Susan warned me the car was moving. Turning around, I see the car rolling down the drive way. Panicked, I ran around the open door, and tried to get into the car. The car was moving too fast, so, I attempted to abort the entry. That failed as well because my foot was caught in the gas pedal. Half in/out of the car, hopping backwards, I fell, and was dragged by the car on my back. At the curb, I was flipped over to my tummy. The car stopped near the middle of the road, with the door in the center of my back, pinning me to the ground. My foot was about 180 degrees from normal, still wedged on gas pedal. In pain, I yelled for help. A neighbor stopped and helped Susan raise the door enough for me to escape. Using my body to stop the car resulted in MCL, and hip flexor strains, meralgia paresthetica, road rash, and several bruises. I suspect my training for skiing reduced the severity of the injuries. This is what I believe happened. In my haste, I pushed the emergency brake button in the wrong direction, and hopped out of the car. Because the car wasn't moving, subconsciously, I assumed that emergency brake was set. Soon after, the HSA released. My tip/warning is to not rely upon lack of motion, but to observe the instrument cluster for emergency brake engagement. I was lucky, you may not be. Wayne

Roughly, 60,000 folks attended the Festival of Lights Parade to see 3,000 participants in 75 entries. There were a lot of smiles, laughter, good-will, and children which are always more fun at this time of year. It's difficult to describe all of the lights. The low power consumption of LEDs has resulted in LEDs being worn. We saw LEDs on backpacks, dogs, marching bands, and individuals. Channel 11 has a video online of the parade, and will rebroadcast on Christmas day. This was Susan's and my 3rd participation in this Parade, and the warmest. Susan and I used 7 strands of lights, a net, and a spot light. What always surprises me, is all those lights just don't seem to cover the car as much as you might think. Because we were Entry 42, I used green tape to make a "42", the way we do for an auto-X ;-) Regardless, decorating the car was a fun project to do with the better half. I hope Santa noticed how good I was at ignoring requests for engine revs and wheel slippage. I sure could use a set of racing tires under the tree! I would like to thank Carol for organizing, Larry and Gwenda for the cheery send off, and Ric Noring and the Corvette Center for sponsoring our club’s entry in the parade! We are looking forward to doing this again next year. Wooohoooo! By Wayne Umland

Thanks to family and friends who joined, and a few other members present to help with the basket/food assembly line. It is heart - warming when you see how desperately some of the families’ need is. It is what it's all about - making 130 families feel cared for and loved! Thanks to all who made this another very successful Christmas Basket Project...wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Christmas wishes and cheer were certainly in the air at the December 18 CSCC Christmas Party. Eighty-two members enjoyed a lovely evening at the Pinery at Black Forest. It was the most wonderful time of the year – an opportunity to celebrate with our

Corvette friends. With the help of an elf or two, Tom Hoeppner treated the group to “A Year in the Life of CSCC”. It was a video of everything NICE about our Club in 2015: smiles, laughs, members, and Corvettes; all with foot-tapping tunes. Another gift of the night was the “The Right Family, a Corvette Christmas Story”. The story didn’t have reindeer dancing on the roof nor did it have visions of sugar plums, however it did have an action packed story that had us all going right, left, and behind. Envelopes passed from person to person teasing each of us with delicious gifts from a bottle of wine, to a $1,000,000,000 chocolate bar, to a $100,000 lotto ticket. Oh - HO, HO, HO – it was a Jolly St. Tom H. that kept us a bit confused but laughing all the way. I would like to say “Thank You” to a couple of member elves: to Barb Hoeppner and Tom Ury for their help in creating the place cards and the gift envelopes, to Diana Dittman for supplying the list of dance music, to Larry Valentine for the Christmas tunes, and to Rob Miskowitch for having his camera always at the ready. I also need to give a BIG and very special THANK YOU to Tom Hoeppner for producing the truly enjoyable video and for a new “Right Family” story.

Thanks to Lorren &

Laurie Loewen for providing their facility

for this

endeavor!

Length of time as a CSCC member?

Jonathan and I became members of the club in August, 2013. Don Anderson was our sponsor. What Corvette do you currently own?

Currently we have a Supersonic Blue 2012 Grand Sport coupe, and a black 1978, 25

th

Anniversary L-82 coupe. Where are you from?

I was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. My father was in the Navy, so we moved around a bit. Most of my formative years were spent growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. In 1973, I joined the Army a year after graduating high school, and travelled the world. In 1985, I was stationed at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora for four years, and it was there my love affair with Colorado began. We returned to Colorado in 1997, and I was stationed at Fort Carson. When the Army wanted to move us again in 1999, I elected to retire from military service, and we settled down to stay. Employment?

When people ask me what I did in the Army, I tell them “I put people in prison.” My military years were in the law enforcement field. During the first 10 years, I was a Military Policeman, and performed numerous jobs. I was a narcotics and explosives detector dog handler, traffic accident investigator, sniper on a SWAT team, and nuclear weapon security specialist, just to name a few. I wanted a more challenging job, so in 1983 I became a criminal investigator. We were called CID Agents, and the best way to describe what we did was to say we were the FBI, DEA, and Secret Service all rolled into one agency. I spent many of my years as a CID Agent working counter-narcotics. A good portion of my tenure in CID, was also in the area of VIP protection, where I provided security for; Casper Weinberger, Dick Cheney, and Colin Powell. After

retiring from the Army I took on management positions with Prudential Insurance and Hertz Rental Cars, before settling down in the security field, where I have been since 2004. My current job is providing security for Academy School District 20. Kids/Pets?

Before I was widowed in 1994, my wife Becky gave me two wonderful sons. Chris, Jr. resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has blessed me with 5 wonderful grandchildren. My other son Jonathan is my purpose in life, and lives with me. The night before Jonathan was born Becky and I were struggling to decide on a name. We elected to go with Jonathan, but didn’t know at the time the origin, or meaning of the name. We learned later the name Jonathan is of Hebrew origin, and means “Gift from God.” Something my son Jonathan truly is. We don’t currently have any pets, but maybe someday a dog may follow us home. Favorite Club activity?

Where do I begin? Meetings and the after meeting dinners, are always enjoyable. We like Garage nights, car shows, GEMs, “watching” autocross racing, and cruising. Actually, anything that involves club members and Corvettes, we enjoy. Hobbies?

I feel a hobby is something a person does for enjoyment that requires concentration, and is done to relieve stress. So I guess washing and waxing the Corvettes falls into that definition. I enjoy shooting, and participating in shooting competitions. Travelling, reading, and watching movies are also things we enjoy doing. Best vacation you ever took?

I’m hoping we haven’t taken it yet. However in 2015, Jonathan and I cruised Yellowstone National Park in the Grand Sport, which is high on our list of favorite vacations. In 2006, we took an 8 day road trip on our Harley through Glacier, Yellowstone, and Flaming Gorge National Parks. We’re really looking forward to doing the “Vettes and Jets on the Lex” in September 2016. I can testify that I have spent over ten years outside of the United States, and nowhere on this planet is there better things to see or do, than what we have in our very own country. What is your dream Corvette?

Having at least one of each series is a dream of mine. However, if I was only permitted to have one, it would be a 1963 coupe, or a C7 ZO6.

Why we love Corvettes

Timing and musical influences probably played major roles in Jonathan and me becoming Corvette enthusiasts. Growing up in the sixties, and listening to: Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, The Rip Cords, as well as Ronny and the Daytonas, placed me on a one way street to Corvette ownership. My first ride was in a 1965 convertible with side pipes. It was a warm summer night, and my friend’s brother was driving. Every time he downshifted, flames shot out of those pipes. It was really cool. Jump forward to 1973, and I’m making a living pumping gas. The mechanic at the gas station had a beautiful 1962 for sale for $2,000.00. To an eighteen year old, not long out of high school making $2.00 an hour, and about to enter the Army, the timing just wasn’t right. College, marriage, kids, and military transfers all seemed to keep my Corvette ambition at bay. Motorcycle riding was another activity Jonathan and I enjoyed, but it ended in 2013. I noticed my riding skills were declining, as well as pain and numbness in my legs and lower back. Stress fractures in my spine that I never knew I had, turned into actual fractures. Therefore, for safety reasons, the Harleys had to go. It didn’t take long for me to realize that something had to be done to fill the empty garage, and replace the wonderful father and son adventures we enjoyed on the Harleys. The time had come. Without letting Jonathan know what I was doing, I began the search, and soon found a very slightly used Velocity Yellow 2006 coupe at the Corvette Center. I bought it very early on a Saturday morning, and snuck it into the garage while Jonathan was still asleep. I then woke him up, and told him I needed his help in the garage. I wish I had videoed his reaction when he first saw our Corvette. Eleven months to the day after we bought that first Corvette, it became a parts donor when a careless driver ran a stop sign and totaled it. Three days after the accident, we purchased our 2012 Grand Sport, and a month after that, we added the 1978 to our collection. Anything else?

I hope everybody in our club realizes just how special our club is, and how wonderful all of our members are. Jonathan and I were immediately welcomed by every member of the club, which has multiplied our enjoyment of Corvette ownership immensely. The fellowship and camaraderie our club possesses, cannot easily be placed into words, and is a testament to just how special everybody is.

Corvette and Auto Trivia

By Tom Ury

I’m running low on tech material, so try these trivia bits on for

size. The answers are listed below:

1. When did alternators first come into existence instead

on generators?

2. What colors were available when the first 1953 Corvette

came out?

3. What car was first to have its radio antennae molded

into the windshield?

4. What was GM’s 100 millionth car and when was it

produced?

5. What year was the first Drive-In movie theatre?

6. What did the Oldsmobile designation “4-4-2” stand for?

7. What does “MG” stand for?

8. Where does the word “pick-up truck” come from?

9. Finally, what is the “Spirit of Ecstasy”?

Answers:

1. Alternators were first used on the 1960 Plymouth

Valiant.

2. Only white was available.

3. The 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix was first with a “hidden”

antennae.

4. The 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was the 100 millionth

car from GM.

5. The first drive-in theatre opened in 1933 at Camden,

NJ.

6. 4-Barrel Carburetor, 4-Speed Transmission, Dual (2)

exhaust.

7. MG stands for Morris Garages.

8. Ford, about the only truck manufacturer back then,

shipped their trucks in crates and were assembled by

the owners. The crates the packages came in were

used for the bed, and had to be “picked up” at the

dealer.

9. It’s not a drug, it’s also not driving a new Z06. It’s the mascot for Rolls-Royce, and she’s found on top of the radiators.

SOLAR POWERED CORVETTE ?!?

So you envision a new Corvette decked out with solar cells and even a wind turbine, or two? Well, maybe not quite yet!

But General Motors does have good news with a nod to the sun at the home of Corvette. It’ll be breaking ground later this month on an 850-kilowatt solar array for its Bowling Green Assembly Plant. GM leads the automotive industry in solar energy use in the USA. The Assembly Plant’s new array will be the largest solar installation by any automaker in Kentucky, generating 1.2 million kw hours of energy annually, enough to produce about 850 Corvettes. “Corvette customers are passionate about their vehicles

because of their design, technology and precision performance,” says Rob Threlkeld, GM global manager of renewable energy. “Offering them a product that is partially

built using green energy will be another proof point that they’re driving a true supercar.” Corvette features the greatest

efficiency of any sports car on the market, delivering an estimated 29 mpg highway rating. NOTES: On November 13, 2015 Kelley Blue Book announced the 2016 Best Buy Award Winners: the 2016

Chevrolet Corvette took top spot in the Performance Car category for the 2nd year in a row. Contenders for the recognition this year included the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro V6, 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang, 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata and 2016 Scion FR-S. The KBB.com editors wrote: “But

beyond stellar performance, the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers the kind of comfort and drivability that takes it from a weekend or special-occasion-only fun car to a truly engaging vehicle perfectly suited as a daily driver.”
