THE VIETNAM WAR
COLONIAL VIETNAM
• In 1887, France ruled Vietnam
• France was motivated by profit and thus, its Indochinese subjects were treated badly
• The farmers (majority of Vietnam) had to give so much food to the landowners and to the French taxes that they had little for themselves
• This caused resentment among the Vietnamese
THE VIETNAMESE REVOLUTION
• The farmers took part in various rebellions in attempt to escape their overlords
• The Communist party led by Ho Chi Minh grew in power
• Soon after that, the First Indochina War began (Vietnam V. France)
• US sent aid to France in order to prevent the spread of Communism
• The Vietnamese won the war and Vietnam split into 2 parts
START OF THE VIETNAM WAR
• The Viet Cong in North Vietnam wanted to unify Vietnam
• The US controlled South wanted to protect itself and be independent
• After the war began, Diem was assassinated.
• US did not get too military involved until the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. After that, Johnson was able to commit troops to the war
• Johnson first started Operation Rolling Thunder and then sent 100,000 troops to fight in Vietnam.
PROTESTS AGAINST THE WAR
• Many university students felt that the Vietnam War was immoral and held protests
• After the Tet Offensive, opposition grew even more against the war.
• The Pentagon Papers (leaked papers of the war) exacerbated the situation and caused alienation from the government
• Nixon attempted to draw out troops from the war via Vietnamization
THE END OF THE VIETNAM WAR
• In order to come to talking terms for a treaty, Nixon intensely bombed North Vietnam for 8 days
• After the bombing, they met in Paris to discuss a treaty
• After the treaty, however, North and South Vietnam fought again with the US financially supporting the South
• On July 2, 1976, Vietnam became unified as a Socialist Republic
• The end of the war helped bring an end to the Cold War as well
