Seniors reflect on coming graduation

It took us four years to get here and we finally made it, the moment we have all been waiting for -- graduation.

All that’s left to say now is congratulations, Kinston High class of 2011, for a job well done.

Looking back, we never realized how special this mo-ment would be. What feels unreal to some of us is reality.

It seems like it was just yes-terday that we were little kids ready to get up and watch our favorite shows -- for me, Franklin, Little Bear, The Tel-etubbies, and Barney. When I was a little older, I was ready to watch shows like the Ru-grats, Hey Arnold!,, Cousin Skeeter and Doug.

Don’t you wish we could go back in time when there were no worries in the world and it was OK just to be a kid?

Yet, here we are, about to enter the real world and

leave behind the safe walls of KHS.

We know this moment is bittersweet, and it should not be taken for granted be-cause as Nicki Minaj would say, “This is Our Moment for Life.”

Now that a chapter has closed in our lives, it is time to start a new one. It’s time to face the real world.

All we can do now is keep the memories that we shared together and look forward to a bright future that lies ahead.

We hope 10 years from now we can talk about memorable moments such as being the state champs in basketball, having a great homecoming, our senior trip, and setting our own mark on Kinston High’s his-tory. We am proud to say that we are a part of the graduating class of 2011.

We have finally made it through our journey, and now it is time to start reach-ing our destination.

Letters welcomeAs these last few weeks

seem to be the end of the road for high school seniors, it’s the start of something new for college graduates.

A couple of weeks ago, col-lege students officially be-came alumni of the school sthat most of us are looking forward to attending this

fall. Although this may seem irrelevant in some seniors’ cases, it should be a wake up call for what most of us can expect in the next four years.

East Carolina University, North Carolina A&T State University and the Univer-sity of North Carolina at Cha-pel Hill are just a few of the universities that had students graduate in mid-May.

I had the opportunity to at-tend the A&T graduation, and I actually realized that college graduation is one of the most important graduations that

As members of The Viking Press staff, we bring you the latest news and interesting profiles on you and your fel-low classmates.

But we also stay behind the scenes. We’re not allowed to interview each other or fea-ture ourselves in the paper unless we are making news -- like winning a scholarship or a state championship.

In fact, the photo above is the first and only time you’ll see most of us in the newspa-per this year.

We wanted to use our edi-torial space in the last edition to let you, the reader, know that is has been our distinct pleasure to serve you this year.

We hope our stories have entertained and informed you. We hope you’re bet-ter citizens of KHS, Kinston and the world because of the things you’ve read here.

(Actually, we just hope you took the time to read our sto-ries from start to finish.)

We also want to thank you

for allowing us the privilege of being the voice of the school with our printed words. We endeavor to represent the KHS community in an open, honest forum, as our mission statement says, and you, the KHS students and staff, have given us plenty of opportuni-ties to gush about the many accomplishments of our peers and teachers.

Now, as the year comes to an end, we want to encourage each and every one of you to finish strong, do well on your

exams and, for the seniors, to keep up the momentum go-ing forward with the rest of your lives as you walk across the stage on June 11.

Once again, thank you for letting us into your world, even if only for a few minutes once a month.

We hope to stay connected through our website, thevi-kingpress.com, and our Face-book and Twitter accounts.

See you ‘round, Class of ‘11!

June 11 graduation practice for another in four yearswe as high school seniors will ever be a part of.

While being there, I really got emotional. It felt as if I were the one walking across that stage since it will actu-ally happen in a little more than a week with my own graduation at Kinston High.

Reality set in. My life is going to change

in a blink of an eye and I’m wondering, am I prepared for it? Not just my high school graduation, but the one that will come after it.

I do have some time to get

prepared for it since it’s four years away, but even now, I’m thinking graduating from high school should not be something I should be wor-ried about. Graduating from college should be.

That’s when you really have to face the real world and live on your own.

This is just a reality check. These next four years are a time for preparation.

But again, congrats to the class of 2011 -- both high school and college graduates.

World doesn’t end as predicted, but natural disasters still demand our attention

For years, researchers, scientists and religious figures have tried to

predict the timing of the end of the world.

Christian radio broadcaster Harold Camping is the latest in a long line of people claim-ing to know the exact time and date of the Apocalypse. He predicted the world was going to end on May 21, 2011, a prediction he also made back in 1994.

I’m writing this column on a Monday.

I am typing this column, students are still playing in the halls and I still have work to do. Nothing unusual here.

To many, though, it may seem like the end of the world. The world may not be ending in a literal sense, but an unusual number of natural disasters in the last couple of

months surely has some feel-ing like they have nothing to live for.

A devastating 8.0 magni-tude earthquakes in Japan followed by a series of tsu-namis killed thousands; mul-tiple tornadoes swept across the U.S., including one that destroyed Greene Central Middle School; California wildfires devoured the land-scape (as have wildfires much closer to us in Dare County along the North Carolina coast); Malaysian children were killed by a landslide; and a volcano erupted last weekend in Iceland.

These are only a few of the many disasters that have taken place this year. Due to these events, people have lost loved ones, homes, jobs, and countless irreplaceable per-sonal possessions.

It will only be made right if we bring back the “world” they need to survive by step-ping up and supporting our

communities as they recover from these natural disasters.

The world is not over yet, and it is our job to keep it that way.

Right: The chart shows statistics for tornadoes that have touched down in the United States in 2011.

A sharp spike in the month of April puts 2011 on a record breaking pace for tornadoes.

North Carolina is one of five states that have had 75 or more tornadoes, including one in Greene County.

Plugged In: A generation born of technologyWe are texters, tweeters, bloggers and gamers

As a tech savvy generation of texters, tweeters, gamers, bloggers and social network enthusiasts, we cannot re-member a day without the comfort and entertainment provided by our cell phones. We cannot recall a time when we did not have access to the latest high tech gadgets that make our everyday lives easier and more bearable.

Although we are too young to remember, the first truly portable cell phone made its appearance in the early 1980’s and later gained fame on the popular teen sitcom ‘’Saved by the Bell’.’ It was actually the 90’s, however, that ignited an entire tech-nology revolution that would change the way we watched TV, surfed the net, and com-municated with other people.

Over the last 30 years, cell phones have evolved from 1G to 4G, allowing us to re-ceive better signals, commu-nicate over larger distances, keep tabs on friends without a land line and even send small emails called text messages. Today’s cell phone is more

like a pocket sized super com-puter.

Television has also under-gone a major makeover with the recent switch from analog to digital as well as a transi-tion from traditional to flat screen televisions. We can now watch TV in hi-defi-nition (1080p) blue-ray and even 3D, which provide a su-perior viewing experience.

Cassette players have given way to CD players that in turn were replaced by the iPod which continues to be improved upon with features such as larger memory, touch screen and even the ability to play videos.

Various social networks have also made an appear-ance, and while it seems like they have been around forev-er some sites have emerged as recently as 2005. A few well known networks are Face-book, Twitter and Myspace;

the latter of these three, of course, shows us just how quickly a website can fall out of favor with the masses.

Many of these cyber hang-out spots are home to everyday users as well as business pro-fessionals and even celebrities. Social networks have revolu-tionized the way we commu-nicate with people on local, international and global levels.

And last but certainly not least, the video game indus-try has made some of the most significant technologi-

cal advancements. Major companies like Sony, Micro-soft and Nintendo have made such great strides with their game consoles, graphics, CGI (computer generated imag-ery) and game play that they have caused consumers to debate which system is supe-rior. They continue to outdo themselves and each other as they pave the road of tech-nology that has set the stan-dards for the next generation of gaming experiences.

We truly are a generation

that runs on technology. Most of us have used a computer at some point to research a topic for a senior project, to play games, chat, and even buy more technology to use. While some alarmists be-lieve that technology has a purely negative impact on us, I believe that our daily use of technology has prepared, and will continue to prepare, us for a world in which almost every industry and business is man-aged completely by, or with the assistance of, technology.

Senior Week was a time for the Class of 2011 to show school pride with a week’s worth of Spirit costumes and activities leading up to the Memorial Day weekend, the traditional three-day weekend upcoming graduates use to celebrate the end of a 13-year-journey that will end on June 11 when they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas.

Monday, May 23, was deemed International Day, followed by Senior Citizen/Little Kid Day on Tuesday. Wednesday saw students wear costumes de-picting what they want to be when they grow up. Thursday was reserved for senior t-shirts; slogans read “On a scale of 1-10, we’re an 11.” On Friday, the halls were more deserted than usual as several seniors took a day off to head to the beach early.

Enjoy our photo essay on Senior Week. All photos were taken by members of The Viking Press staff.

Meanwhile, a few students opted to dress as their future selves, with costumes ranging from the humorous (a giant bowl of macaroni and cheese) to the sincere (fashion design-ers, politicians and firemen).

Seniors travel to Disney World for Grad-Nite 2011

Kinston High’s Class of 2011 was the first class in years to go on the Grad Nite trip to Disney World.

Grad Nite, which is held at Magic Kingdom, is for high school seniors all across the country. The students are al-lowed to go to the park from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m., and during this time they can do anything from riding the rides to listening to a DJ and dancing.

The Student Govern-ment President, Brianna Rhodes, teamed up with Mr. Regional Dawson, SGA adviser, to make trip possible.

Both said the trip would give them seniors a chance to unite one last time and do something memorable together be-fore graduating.

“We have good kids and some of them haven’t had the oppor-

tunity to go out of the state and enjoy time with their friends,” Dawson said.

Approximately 55 people went on the trip -- 45 students and 10 chaperones. Though the trip only lasted for three days, the group managed to participate in several fun activities including shopping, an afternoon at Wet ‘n Wild, a din-ner theatre experience at Medieval Times and Grad Nite.

“It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Rhodes said.

Dawson, too, was pleased with the outcome.

“This experience for the seniors should be remembered and cher-ished; it gave them the opportunity to bond with their classmates,” Dawson said.

He added that al-though the school won’t participate in Grad Nite next year, he plans to organize a different se-nior trip.

Students, staff lament loss of AVID program

The AVID class of 2011 will be the last to graduate from KHS, as the pro-gram has been canceled.

Staff Photo/The Viking Press

Since its arrival at Kinston High five years ago, the AVID program has prepared more than a hundred KHS students for college.

Now it is one of the many programs being cut by the county due to a lack of funds to sup-port the program.

The AVID program is a preparatory course that not only prepares students for college but also helps them live up to their full potential.

“It’s basically a college prep course that turns B students into A stu-dents,” AVID Coordina-tor Clay Stilley said. “In addition, it has helped o create a sense of com-munity in the classroom while teaching students vital 21st century skills like collaboration and teamwork.

“Due to a tight budget, however, the county has cut a lot of programs. Unfortunately, AVID is one of them, and it will be sorely missed.”

Over the last four years, AVID has drasti-cally helped to improve our EOC composite in English and History courses.

The reason the pro-gram has had such a monumental impact is that it allows students taking EOC’s two se-mesters to prepare for exams instead of one.

In addition to extend-ed preparation time, AVID students have developed strong bonds with each other over the last four year, and because they can rely on each other, each student has a greater chance of academic success.

AVID students are dedicated and are more likely to work harder for

their teachers and them-selves, AVID students said.

“The AVID program has helped me to mo-tivate and challenge myself and also prepare myself for college,” se-nior Chanelle Thomas said. “This experience has given me a different outlook on society. Par-ticipating in AVID has enabled me to succeed and be the best. I have been in AVID since the sixth grade and I enjoy the program and un-derstand the basic prin-ciples of college.”

Stilley said: “I have mixed feelings about the loss of the program. I feel the program has not been provided with ad-equate funding it needs in order to operate at its full potential and it makes me sad because you cannot put a price on how the program has benefited students.”

Senior receieves care package from TAsTeachers say Jonathan Ramos is very deserving of gift

The gift box read, “With love from KHS TA’s,” a gift for the Kinston High senior.

Accompanying the box in the student lounge were Prin-cipal Wynn Whittington, teaching assistants Ms. Davis and Ms. Coples and a hand-ful of other school officials. The gift box, Davis said, was a service project created by the county’s teaching assistants. Each school, she said, was to choose one student to receive the surprise goody bag.

Ramos was selected for this surprise at Kinston High as a way for the staff to show its appreciation for a student de-scribed by the staff as “very outgoing and friendly.”

“Jonathan, my darling, we love you,” Coples told him. “This gift was from us to

After graduation, Ramos plans to pursue his future at a culinary arts school like Le Cordon Bleu. To help prepare for a possible career in the food industry, he often helps the ladies in the cafeteria by cleaning and preparing food. The staff felt like his hard work and dedication has paid off, so they decided to reward him with the Valentine’s Day gift bag.

Ramos opened the box and found it was full of personal items.

“When you do well, you reap such a good harvest in the end,” Coples told him as he smiled at the items he found inside the box.

After a few minutes of rum-maging through the box, Ra-

mos told his teachers how thankful he was for the ges-ture.

“Thank you guys,” he said.

“No one has ever done any-thing like this for me before. I really wasn’t expecting it. I’m definitely going to miss this

after I graduate, but at least I know that people here love me.”

A red box with a pink heart greeted Jonathan Ramos in the student lounge back on Feb. 15.
