Your home

Lights in your home provide a range of functions. On one level they are practical providing light where you need it most but in other areas they can be used to create the right ambience and are a key element of interior design. You can change the whole atmosphere of your home just by the careful use of lighting. Finding a balance between functionality and personality while allowing for flexibility can be a challenge. Remember that your home changes character throughout the day and each room has its own role to play in daily life so take this into account when planning lighting.

The available choice of modern lighting fixtures is as limitless as the imaginations of the designers who create them. With such choice, it is all too easy for the consumer to get confused, especially at the planning stage, so it is vitally important to know before purchasing exactly how light works and what to think about for each room where you plan to change the lighting configuration.

That’s where Aladdin Lighting can help!

They are open 6 days a week and have over 250 different designs of Table Lamps and Floor Lamps on show in their showroom. An array of styles available to suit all tastes including rope lights, tripods, wooden lamps, pottery – retro or traditional, Tiffany lamps, ceramic, mosaic, pebble, ceramic night lights, adjustable task lights and desk lamps. Some really

unusual, eye-catching pieces such as atlas shade and silver globe base which spins on its axis.

They also stock children’s lamps including hand painted bedside lamps with matching hand painted/engraved wooden stools.

Prices range from £10 up to £250 and all Aladdin stock is ‘plug and go’ – ready to plug in and useIf they don’t have what the you’re is looking for, they are happy to go through their supplier catalogues to try and find the perfect fitting and order it for you.

To find out more why not visit their facebook page www.facebook.com/aladdinlights or follow them on twitter @AladdinLights where they post pictures of new stock available and favourite pieces.

Aladdin lights up your life

Lumena LightsAladdin Lighting is a division of Lumena Lights, suppliers of high quality outdoor lighting at low prices. The Lumena showroom is in the same building as Aladdin. Their range includes outdoor wall lights, flood lights, path lights, bollards, spike lights, solar lights and 12v garden lighting. New 12v lighting showroom opening soon – but products already available.

There are few British animals more magical and majestic than owls. In the UK we have five species of owl, some resident and some migratory; the barn owl, tawny owl, little owl, short-eared owl and long-eared owl. There are also records of eagle owls and snowy owls in the UK, however, these are very rare and are often escapees from zoos and collections.

March is an excellent time of year to hear our British owls, as this is when courtship and nesting takes place in earnest and the birds are at their most vocal. You may all be familiar with the calls of the tawny owl; the male›s hoot of «hu...hu-hoooooo» and the female›s «kewick». Little owls make repetitive, wistful calls of «kiew kiew» and can sound rather like a small dog, whilst barn owls do not hoot but instead make shrieking and hissing sounds.

The barn owl is the most widely distributed species of owl across the world, with some 30 sub-species all with slight physical and behavioural differences to suit their habitats. For example, the barn owls which live further north in Europe have darker plumage than those found in the UK, and many subspecies differ in size and behaviour, with our UK owl being one of the only subspecies which can often be seen hunting by day.

Barn owls are monogamous and mate for life, however, there are some records of a male bird having two females. Nest sites are used repeatedly by generations of owls, sometimes for 20-30 years. There are even records of a nest site being used for 100 years!

Barn owls have the most acute hearing in the animal kingdom; their ears are positioned on the side of their heads asymmetrically. They have a white heart-shape face, which perfectly catches noises and channels them to these ears. Their plumage and flight feathers have evolved in such a way to result in a silent flight.

Historically barn owls nested in places like dead trees, but over time made use of barns, often encouraged by farmers as they preyed on troublesome rodents (eating up to 2000 rodents a years!). Farmers designed owl windows in their barns to offer easy access. However, due to increased barn conversions and demolitions, coupled with a loss of habitat of their favourite prey - field voles - barn owl numbers are in decline in the UK and as a result have an RSPB Amber status.

If you’d like to help barn owls or any other owls in your area, take a look at the Barn Owl Trust website www.barnowltrust.org.uk for ideas on owl boxes, friendly gardening, supporting your local farmer or your local bird group.

Your garden

This is where JumboJet comes in. JumboJet is a chemical-free, professional pressure washing service that cleans, revives and tranforms paths, patios, drives, block paving, timber decking, tarmac, concrete slabs, real and reconstituted stone, garden furniture and ornaments.

Weeds, moss, grime, algae, lichen... without regular attention it doesn’t take long for your home’s outside surfaces to look tired, old and in desperate need of TLC. Such unwanted growths can also cause steps, paths, patios and decking to become slippery and potentially hazardous. Yet contrary to popular belief, these growths do not damage what they’re growing on and with the right help, your home’s exterior hard surfaces will soon be looking as good as new.

This environmentally-friendly service uses nothing but water as the cleaning medium, jetting water out at a far higher pressure than the DIY machines available to the domestic market. The result is a much deeper, better clean, which removes weeds, moss, grime, algae and lichen and breathes new life into your property’s hard surfaces.

JumboJet can also protect your newly cleaned surfaces with its sanding and sealing service. Trained operatives will brush kiln-dried sand back into the paving joints before applying a clear acrylic sealant to the surface. This sealant forms a barrier, greatly reducing weed growth in the joins and minimising future maintenance. In addition, JumboJet can re-tint pattern imprinted concrete driveways, restoring them to their original colour.

JumboJet staff will leave your outside areas clean and tidy, check that your drains aren’t blocked and wash down windows, doors and paintwork once the job has been done.

Founded in 2009 we offer free quotation without obligation and a free demonstration of the effectiveness of the service can be arranged!

Call JumboJet for your free, no-obligation quotation on 01327 878713 or visit www.jumbojetwash.com

Benefi t From Additional Income Streams

The business also has close links with, and is an authorised contractor for a leading sealant supplier. Adding sealant treatments to cleaned drives, patios and decking is not only a great added service for the customer – protecting their hard services for longer – but it is also an excellent way to get add on sales and profi t. I receive excellent quality leads from their website, nearly all of which I convert with the benefi t of sealant treatment as well.

I’m also currently developing a system for restoring people’s garden furniture – another great earning potential and one which will have huge appeal to the lucrative commercial market, especially the likes of the big pub and hotel chains. This is just one of several ideas that we are working on to increase the business opportunities with Jumbojet.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear – A Simple Way To Save Money

Cloudy2Clear Windows, the Northampton based window repair company, are revolutionising how homeowners view double glazing in our area. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as customers take advantage of their services.

Managing Director Trevor Skidmore is more than happy to explain the process. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. I find people are amazed at just

how simple the process is and the speed with which we can replace the glass. This isn’t like when you have new frames put in with people levering out the old ones with loads of mess. We can pop the old glass out and deliver, effectively, a brand new window within a matter of minutes. At the end of the day most frames, even timber ones, will last forever. It’s very rare we come across a window that needs a full replacement and that means the customer gets, effectively, a new window at a fraction of the cost.’

Trevor is rightly proud too of comments he receives back from satisfied customers, a selection of which he has put on his website

www.cloudy2clear.co.uk. For example, he recently completed an installation at Mr Miners house in Northampton. Here’s what he had to say. ‘I have to say that I thought the service Cloudy2Clear offer compared to having completely new windows absolutely incredible value. The service was reliable, simple and without complication.

The windows look absolutely brilliant and installation was incredibly quick. Thank you!’

High praise indeed! So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be more than happy to help!

All about herbs...

ParsleyNo kitchen should be without a good supply of this multi-purpose herb. It can be used as a garnish and flavouring and as a vegetable. There are two main varieties: curly leaf and flatleaf. Both can be used for the same purposes although flatleaf parsley has a stronger flavour and tends to be favoured in Mediterranean cooking.

Easy Lettuce and Herb Salad3 qts. (6 oz.) lightly packed mixed greens1 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves1/2 cup fresh tarragon leaves1 tablespoon minced shallot1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons sherry vinegar1/2 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon pepper

Put greens and herbs in a large salad bowl. Whisk together remaining ingredients in a small bowl, add to greens, and toss to mix.

Voujon Chef wins Regional Award Shahjan Ahmed, a chef from the Long Buckby Indian restaurant Voujon has beaten 35 rivals to be crowned the regional winner at the Master Chef Promotions Awards ceremony held in New Bingley Hall in Birmingham.

Mr Ahmed has worked at Voujon for 12 years and his experience paid off in the cook off where he had to produce a starter, main course and a rice dish of his choice in one hour. The judges including Manju Malhi and Franck Pontais had the delightful task of tasting a starter of mango prawns followed by Mr Ahmeds signature dish of lamb nahiri with cumin rice.

Amran Ali, owner of Voujon said it was a huge honour for Shahjan to be nominated and then to go on to win was an outstanding achievement. This will certainly put Voujon Restaurant well and truly on the map.

National Trust Fascinating factsThey’re the nation’s largest farmer, with more than 618,000 acres of land and about 2,000 tenants.

Each year, they serve over 3.5 million cups of tea. That’s quite a lot of tea.

They own and run 61 pubs and inns, including the George Inn in Southwark, featured in Dickens’ Little Dorrit.

They have 12,000 volunteer room stewards, almost 100 of whom have given more than 50 years service.

They are the largest voluntary conservation organisation in Europe (recruiting more than one member every minute during the summer months). The only organisation in the UK to have a larger membership is the AA.

They have 32 Plant Heritage National Plant Collections – making them the largest single collection holder in the UK.

With 4 million members, they have about six times more members than all the main political parties put together.

They look after one in ten of all the museums in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

They own 59 villages, such as Buttermere in Cumbria and Lacock in Wiltshire.

They have 60,000 volunteers contributing 3.1 million hours of their time – the equivalent of 1,590 full-time staff.

Back in 1895, The National Trust was founded with the aim of saving our nation’s heritage and open spaces. 120 years later, they’re still working hard to uphold these values.

The National Trust own a range of properties in Warwickshire and Northamptonshire offering great days out visiting their historic buildings or exploring the gardens. Many properties offer special events for families from free family craft days and geocaching to making bird feeders or learning some photography top tips.

All the properties and events on offer can be found at www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Out & about

Eggs have been used as symbols at festivals since before the time of Jesus, but are now particularly synonymous with Easter and the story of the resurrection. Eggs are said to represent new life, and for Christians when they are cracked open, they stand for the empty tomb following Jesus’ rising. Eggs are also considered special, because although they do not seem alive they have life within them - especially in springtime when chicks hatch out.

In previous times people gave gifts of eggs carved from wood or precious stones. It is only in the last 100 years or so that sweet eggs have been eaten. The size and range of chocolate eggs available seems to increase every year. The tallest chocolate egg was 10.39 metres tall and made in Italy in 2011. It weighed 7.2 kilograms and was 9.6 metres at its widest point!

It is not known exactly who first created the story of the Easter Bunny, but it seems to have its origins in Germany. It was first mentioned in German texts in the 16th Century. In the 1700’s German immigrants told stories when they went to America of egg- laying rabbits, and they encouraged children to use caps and bonnets to make nests which the Easter bunny would fill with coloured eggs - if they’d

been good. The first edible Easter bunnies appeared in Germany during the early 1800s and were made of pastry and sugar. The symbol of the rabbit was probably chosen because of its associations with fertility and spring. It is believed that Eostre, the Anglo Saxon God of Spring, had a hare as a companion.

In addition to having Easter Egg Hunts to search for the eggs left by the Bunny, another common Easter activity is egg rolling. This is done using real hard boiled eggs, and time is usually spent decorating them beforehand. In years gone by the eggs were dyed using onion skin, today’s painting process is much easier. In the UK egg rolling is generally done by rolling eggs down a hill, and the winner is the one whose egg rolls further or survives the most rolls. In the early nineteenth century in Northern Ireland, egg rolling was described as ‘trindling’ or ‘trundling.’ Another traditional game involves holding your egg in the palm of the hand and banging against your opponent’s egg. The loser is the one whose egg breaks first.

In the USA one of the most well known events is held on the White House Lawn, and involves parents and children pushing eggs along through the grass with wooden spoons.

Waste not want not!We throw away 290,000 tonnes of milk a year - from soups to puddings, why not use it in a deli-cious recipe before it goes off? This homemade strawberry milk is full of fresh fruit flavor and velvety smoothness. This recipe is simple to make, and could be adapted to whatever your favorite fruit might be (blueberry, peach and mango are all great substitutions).

Strawberry Milkserves 2

1 cup strawberries, chopped 1/2 cup sugar1 cup water1 1/2 cup milk

In a small pot, heat strawber-ries, sugar and water until boiling (it’s a bit like making jam). Let boil for about 10 minutes; mixture will reduce and thicken slightly. Using a fine sieve or mesh strainer, strain the mixture into a small bowl. You can save the cooked strawberries to add to yogurt or put on pancakes. Set the strawberry syrup aside.

Chill two small glasses in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Add 3/4 cup milk to each glass. Swirl in 3 tablespoons of the strawberry syrup into each glass of milk (more or less, depending on desired sweetness). You will have a little strawberry syrup left over, perfect for pancakes or adding to lemon-ade or soda water.

Since opening Kilsby Cattery in 2009 we have watched our business and reputation grow from strength to strength. We are very fortunate to live in an idyllic position in Kilsby on our 3 acre smallholding surrounded by open countryside along with our ‘family’ of ponies, goats and sheep and it is this backdrop which provides such a safe and stimulating environment for our cattery guests. All of our guests are treated as individuals and are thoroughly spoilt throughout their stay We like to think that they too are on holiday and try to make it as stress free as possible with relaxing music playing, heated beds and treats and cuddles aplenty. We care very much about our customers both human and feline and are incredibly proud of our success.

We were approached by Clare Gardner at the end of last year asking if we had any jobs in the cattery which we did not. We were so impressed with Clare that we decided to create a job for her, hence the idea for the Groom Room was born. Clare is a fully qualified pet groomer with 22 years’ experience and it is immediately apparent on meeting her that she has a passion for her job and for animals in general. We had an old barn in the courtyard, well away from the cattery which we decided to convert into a state of the art grooming parlour. Two months later and after an awful lot of hard work The Groom Room opened in January this year. To say that we are proud of it would be an understatement – it is stunning! It is fitted out with all the latest equipment and provides a warm, relaxing place for your dog or cat to be pampered – think Champneys for pets and you have the general idea. A feeling of wellbeing and calm is the environment that we wanted to create and I think that when you visit us you will agree that we have achieved this.

Our reception area is warm and comfortable with relaxing music, magazines and wifi access and you are more than welcome to wait here whilst your pet is being pampered. Should you wish to leave your pet with us, we have purpose built bespoke holding units with comfy vet bedding, fresh water and plenty of treats. Our aim is not to have a conveyor belt of dogs and cats coming in and out at the same time but to take the time to give each pet a unique pampering experience which they will enjoy not endure! Clare will discuss your individual requirements with you in detail, thus ensuring that you get the groom that you have asked for at a very competitive price!

As an introductory offer we are offering a 20% price reduction on all Grooms throughout March, please quote The Emporium when booking, but please hurry as we are getting booked up very quickly! A comprehensive list of services and prices can be found on our website www.kilsbycattery.co.uk . We can also be found on facebook for both Kilsby Cattery and Kilsby Groom Room where you will find lots of lovely pictures of our happy customers. Please like and share our pages with all your animal loving friends!

Should you wish to visit Kilsby Cattery or The Groom Room please telephone us to make an appointment and we would love to show you around, we know you will not be disappointed!

Please visit our website at www.kilsbycattery.co.uk for more information or telephone Kim in the Cattery on 01788 824132 or Clare in The Groom Room on 07736 299554.  We look forward to welcoming customers both old and new!

Social Problems There is a joke doing the rounds which goes something like: The best thing about being a teen in the 1980s is that we made all our big mistakes before the internet was invented! There is much truth in that.

When your teen tweets or posts a picture to Instagram, he or she probably doesn’t think about how it might affect her tomorrow, let alone how it might affect her chances of getting a job. The hard truth is, that what we send into cyberspace can be difficult to erase.

There have been some recent news stories about young people losing jobs, or not even getting an interview, based solely on what someone from the company has seen on their MySpace or Facebook page.

Many employers now use social media profiling to screen potential employees. Vetting a candidate’s social media profiles can give employers an insight into someone’s personality, character or work ethic.

If your teen’s profile is not set to ‘private’ it will be accessible to a potential employer and their content found through search engines like Google. This is true for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It may be unfair and discriminatory but it happens, and even fairly innocuous material might be judged harshly by someone who doesn’t know the person involved.

You can help by getting involved in your child’s social media presence. Become familiar with the tools they use, and offer advice to save them from making mistakes which may be difficult to correct. The good news is that you can help your teen clean up their social media sites before they get ready to apply for jobs. Take an afternoon to go through each social media profile and delete any inappropriate

photos or comments. There are some software products which can help, like SimpleWash, though these generally don’t apply to photos.

So does this mean you should stop your teen from using any social media? Most experts say that this isn’t necessary. In fact a well-handled social media profile can be very beneficial. It allows young people to connect with those in the industry they’re trying to break into. By engaging with other professionals they can show that they’re both serious and knowledgeable.

Top Tips for Teens

n Keep just one social media profile where you post personal information. n Make sure main profile photos and cover photos are conservative. n If something is even slightly questionable, do not post it publicly. n Be careful what you ‘like’ or comment on. If the person posting has a public profile your comment will be visible too. n Make your public image one you’d be happy to show to anyone, even your great granny. n Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know, or if you must, then put them on a ‘restricted’ list, but remember that privacy filters on social networking sites are subject to change and are not fail-safe. Check filters regularly. n The top tip to take away from the experts is to keep your profile private!

Spratton is to receive an official government commemorative paving stone recording the fact that the first airman ever to be awarded a Victoria Cross, the country’s highest award for bravery, lived there. William Rhodes-Moorhouse lived with his family at Spratton Grange for nearly 14 years and was well-known in the area for his fast motor-cars and his exciting, new flying machine.

He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 he was posted to France as a pilot. In April 1915, after only five weeks active service, he was fatally wounded over Belgium destroying a railway line being used to bring up heavy enemy reinforcements, including the dreaded chlorine gas. In great agony and with a badly damaged plane he managed to fly back 35 miles to his base in France to report the success of his mission. He died the next day, aged 27.

“This was by far the most brilliant feat of airmanship we had yet witnessed”

One hundred years after that fatal flight, an official memorial stone to Lt William Rhodes-Moorhouse VC will be placed in the Millennium Rose Garden on the Brixworth Road and unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant for Northamptonshire, Mr David Laing on Sunday 12th April 2015.

Free weekend of events 25th -26th April

Two weeks later, Spratton Local History Society is organising “Spratton Remembers the Great War” in the grounds of Spratton Hall School to help us understand the impact the conflict had on a small country village. There is a wide programme of events including a fly past of a BE2b from Sywell Aerodrome, and a Typhoon from No 2 Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth and a WW1 encampment. It was a time of great social upheaval bringing opportunities to many women which had a dramatic impact on fashions; an exhibition on “Women and the Great War” showcases their stories and their clothes.

Free admission to all events and free parking. More info at www.sprattonhistory.org.uk

As of May / June edition we will be delivering to the homes of Spratton.
