From Pete’s mouth to our Ears: If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished,
Refinished, resold, recycled, or composted. Then should it be restricted, redesigned or removed from production?
Lyrics from: If it Can’t Be Reduced” By: Pete Seeger
From the album: AT 89 I think he said it all in just those few lines.
Often, I have heard the Municipal Transfer Station being referred to as “Marshall’s by the Sea” or the “Port Alice Wal-Mart”. Any given day you will find “treasurers” left under the covered area that may be useful to someone else. We appreciate your thoughtfulness by not adding to the land fill. Unfortunately, there are many items left there that are passed their prime and the student worker must haul it over to the blue bin. Please be selective when leaving items under the covered area, and don’t forget the Thrift Store, they appreciate the donations. Reminder that anything with a plug now gets recycled. Did you know that outdated encyclopedias, medical journals, school texts etc. can be added to the mixed paper collection? Hard covers have to be removed firstly. Mixed paper, magazines, newsprint, catalogues and junk mail is accepted at our INSIDE DEPOT, found in the blue Public Works Building. Can’t say this enough times, PLEASE make every effort to bring your PAPER down when open.
Tuesday 4:00 - 8:00pm Saturday 10:00 - 2:00pm Sunday 2:00 - 6:00pm
Tuesday hours maybe reduced due to weather.

AGM Apr. 18 2:00 PM SEAVAC Multipurpose Room Human Security and Climate Change April 20 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM Larry Pepper Room Look at how climate change affects our world, in particular, in terms of human security. Sociologist, Karsten Henriksen, will illustrate how climate change in previous ice ages has lead to conflict, and how humans have adapted. After looking at consequences of the desertification of Sub-Saharan Africa in the present day, use climate models developed by the U.S. government to extrapolate how the eventual desertification of the Prairies will impact North America. Being that sea levels are predicted to rise 4.5 metres (up to about the level of Marine Drive) within 100 years, this lecture will be of interest to everyone in Port Alice. March is Kidney Health Month
Are your kidneys OK?
Kidney Disease is incurable, undetectable in its early stages and on the rise.
2,554 people are on life-saving dialysis in BC * 230 are on the BC Transplant waiting list for a kidney**
In British Columbia, it is estimated that 145,000* people have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Many don’t even know they have developed this life-threatening disease because the symptoms in the early stages are silent. They don’t discover they have kidney disease until they have lost over 50% of their kidney function. The main risk factors are diabetes and high blood pressure. Other contributors include a family history of kid-ney disease and being of Aboriginal, Asian, South Asian or African descent. The Kidney Foundation of Canada is urging everyone who is at risk of developing CKD to ask their family doctor for a simple eGFR Test (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) to determine their level of kidney function. If CKD is detected early, its progression can often be slowed and sometimes even stopped through lifestyle, diet and medication changes. If kidneys fail, dialysis or kidney transplant is necessary for survival. March 8, 2012 is World Kidney Day. Kidney Foundation volunteers will join organizations and communities around the world who will be participating in events and promotions to help spread the word. World Kidney Day activities in BC, at the time of writing, are included in this media kit. Regular updates will be sent as they become known. March Drive is The Kidney Foundation’s annual door to door campaign. In BC, approximately 4,000 volunteers will be canvassing increase awareness of the importance of kidney health and to raise money to help The Kidney Foundation fund research, provide education and support for kidney patients, promote access to high quality health and increase public awareness and commitment to the importance of kidney health and organ donation . Please give generously when a canvasser comes to call, or donate online at www.kidney.bc.ca
