Fellow Members of the Villages Men’s Fun Club

We held our first IN PERSON meeting today. We didn’t

have a speaker, but we did have a high percentage of our

members turn out and the opportunity to talk, meet with

friends, and enjoy good food.

A few things that came up in the meetings today:

We will retain the same officers for next year. The board voted in favor of consistency.

We are looking still for others who wish to become officers or directors of the club in 2022 and beyond. Your work is needed to continue to take this club forward. Please contact me if you’re interested. The work isn’t hard, but it is valuable.

We circulated a questionnaire to look at options for travel in this new club. This is being coordinated by Bill Rodman and Greg Karayan. Greg’s wife is a travel professional who will work to put together travel packages for us. If you have suggestions, contact them. o Bill Rodman: [email protected] o Greg Karayan: [email protected]

We currently have $1006.85 in the bank. We’ll use part of that money for beer during our October meeting.

Our September picnic is a GO!

The other men’s club (the not as fun club) has proposed joining ranks. We voted not to pursue that at this time. Our leadership wants to establish our club, our identity, and our programs first.

We are looking into the possible purchase of our own AV equipment.

Thanks go to all who helped to organize this first in person event today. In

particular, I want to thank Ed Updegraff, who organized the sign-up and check in of

our participants.

I look forward to seeing even more of you at our next meeting!

What is special about the month August? August is known for many things, including the dog days of summer, National

Watermelon Day (Aug. 3) and National Smile Week (Aug. 5-11). But there are

many other fun facts associated with summer’s last full month.

August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the

Roman Empire, who was posthumously adopted by his maternal great-uncle

Gaius Julius Caesar. In the early Roman calendar, August was actually the sixth

month of the year. It was originally 30 days in length, but an extra day was added

so that it would equal the number of days in July, which was named after Julius

Caesar.

Fans of Elvis Presley mourn each Aug. 16th, the day the famed singer died in

1977.

On Aug. 24th in 79 A.D., the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the city

of Pompeii and others.

People born in August fall under the sun zodiac signs of Leo and Virgo. Leos are

known to be dramatic, creative and outgoing. (Just look at the names on our

birthday list!)

FUN STUFF

Who originally said laughter is the best medicine? In the 1300s, Henri de Mondeville, a professor of surgery, propagated post-operative therapy with humor. So here are some funnies:

Top 8 Unusual People of the year!

1. *AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it's not Walter who's lacking the intelligence. 2. *WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS: Police in Oakland, CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, 'Please come out and give yourself up.' 3. *WHAT WAS PLAN B? An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts. 4. *THE GETAWAY! A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him. 5. *DID I SAY THAT? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: 'Give me all your money or I'll shoot', the man shouted, 'That's not what I said!'

Page 11: THE VILLAGES MEN’S FUN LU August, 2021 Newsletter

6. *ARE WE COMMUNICATING? A man spoke frantically into the phone: 'My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart'. 'Is this her first child?' the doctor asked. 'No!' the man shouted, 'This is her husband!' 7. *NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED! In Modesto, CA, Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo...!!!) 8. *THE GRAND FINALE! Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer! *Now remember, these are all true stories and most have children!*

Check the percentage of those from CA.
