Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12 St. Clare of Assisi Parish O’Fallon Illinois The Virgin of Guadalupe, like the shroud of Turin, appears on a piece of fabric. Both are sacred objects, hundreds of years old, and both depict an image said to be mirac- ulous. The Virgin of Guadalupe was declared Queen of Mexico and is Patron of the Americas. First apparition Our Lady of Guadalupe first introduced herself as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity when she appeared on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico in 1531. An indig- enous peasant, Juan Diego, saw a glowing figure on the hill. After she had identified herself to him, Our Lady asked that Juan build her a shrine in that same spot, in order for her to show and share her love and compassion with all those who believe. Afterwards, Juan Diego visited Juan de Zumárraga, who was Archbishop of what is now Mexico City. Zumárraga dismissed him in disbelief and asked that the future Saint provide proof of his story and proof of the Lady’s identity. Juan Diego returned to the hill and encountered Our Lady again. The Virgin told him to climb to the top of the hill and pick some flowers to present to the Archbishop. Listen to our report Winter bloom Although it was winter and nothing should have been in bloom, Juan Diego found an abundance of flowers of a type he had never seen before. The Virgin bundled the flow- ers into Juan's cloak, known as a tilma. When Juan Diego presented the tilma of exotic flowers to Zumárraga, the flowers fell out and he recognised them as Castilian roses, which are not found in Mexico. What was even more significant, however, was that the tilma had been miraculously imprinted with a colorful image of the Virgin herself. Tilma This actual tilma, preserved since that date and showing the familiar image of the Vir- gin Mary with her head bowed and hands together in prayer, represents the Virgin of Guadalupe. It remains perhaps the most sacred object in all of Mexico. The story is best known from a manuscript written in the Aztec’s native language Na- huatl by the scholar Antonio Valeriano. It was written sometime after 1556. Over 20 million people visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe each year, now situated on the very same hill on which she appeared. In 1990, Pope Saint John Paul II visited Mexico and beatified Juan Diego. 10 years later, in the year 2000, he was declared a Saint. Liturgy of the Word

Reading (proclaimed in Spanish) Zecheriah 2:14-17

Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the LORD. Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they shall be his people, and he will dwell among you, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. The LORD will possess Judah as his portion in the holy land, and he will again choose Jerusalem. Silence, all mankind, in the presence of the LORD! For he stirs forth from his holy dwelling.

Reader: Palabra de Dios.

All: Te alabamos, Señor.

Gospel Luke 1:39-47Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son.

Universal Prayer (prayed in Spanish)

We pray for expectant mothers, who, like Mary, carry the future of the world within them: that no consideration may force them to cut off this gift of life, and that they may be supported and loved for their motherhood.

We pray for the sick, the lonely, the hungry, the refugees, and all who are in direct contact with their human lowli-ness: that Mary may visit them with her joy and comfort, as she once did with Juan Diego.

We pray for the faithful departed: that they may find in Mary’s arms a safe haven, and she may lead them along secure paths to the heavenly kingdom.

We pray for the Church, who, like Mary, is portrayed as the great sign of the woman in labor to give birth: that her she may bear fruit in the triumph of Jesus.

We pray for our world: that the reign of God and the authority of His Anoint-ed One may give power to every effort toward justice, morality, and peace

We pray the people of North, Central and South America, who have been given a patroness in Our Lady of Gua-dalupe: that her self portrait as a native of the continents may help restore the balance of respect and resources among all who call America home

Refrain

Juan Dieguito,” the Virgin called gently. “Juan Dieguito,” the Virgin called gently. Telling him intently, telling him intently, “This hill I have chosen for my holy shrine.”

Roses fell from his cloak, brightly tinted, Roses fell from his cloak, brightly tinted, Leaving there imprinted, leaving there imprinted,Leaving there the image of the Virgin fair.
