Thoughts from our other staff…
Dear Friends,
As best as I can recall from my studies or at least from the
shallow depth of my wisdom well, I graciously offer you the
following almost helpful tips and facts of a faux-historical nature.
You will, no doubt, find them completely ridiculous, yet strangely
revealing concerning the Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy.
1. When buying a turkey, be picky of the brand name, after
all you are what you eat, butterball!
2. I’m convinced that dressing was invented by
impoverished pilgrims that must have succumbed to
eating their own clothes. Yuck! 3. A congealed cranberry salad with whole cranberries in it
is an abomination to all that is considered jello.
4. You should fall on your face and beg Almighty God
above for some of my Jessica’s pumpkin roll. Hands
down, all that and a biggo bag of chips. ( Hello again,
1990’s lingo)
5. John Smith and Pocahontas were actually married on
Thanksgiving Day. Having no fresh flowers to pick in
the late fall, they began the tradition of using candy corn
for fall decorations. The edible and festive treats were
provided by a sweet little Indian family over near Yonkers.
6. The turkey legs that they sell at the fair must be
bioengineered to be so huge. Or maybe they just come
from the Purdue farm near the power plant. Either way,
you do not want to meet a turkey like that in that dark
alley behind Victoria’s.
7. And finally, remember to thank God for all the special
people in your life and for all the bountiful blessings on
your table or TV tray. After all, James writes that
everything good (even your obnoxious, belching Uncle
Sammy) comes from God. And we really have a lot to
be thankful for, don’t we?
Be blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.
Mike
NEWS FROM THE MAN CAVE…
WOW! If you missed out, Build Bethlehem is ongoing for next Saturday. We sure could use your help. We’ve had a great turnout and appreciate those who came to help. There is a spirit of unity and teamwork. Everyone is welcome - men, women and youth. Remember, this is our church-wide signature event and help is needed. We need to “dress” the town Saturday.
“WE GO” mission opportunities are just waiting for you to get plugged in. ☺☺
Now is the time to stand and be counted. Your Brother in Christ, Rick Hamblin
Pray for the Hemsin people of northeastern Turkey The Hemsin live high in the Kackar mountains, some with seemingly everything they need. Their village homes overlook beautiful views of God’s creation. They have self-sustained farms to provide food and a cash-crop of tea. What do they not have? A Gospel witness, nor a church.
Pray for God to prepare people to hear the Gospel through
dreams, visions, and encounters with Scripture.
Pray for long-term witness among the Hemsin people.
Pray for relational connections in Hemsin villages.
Pray for a church to be planted among the Hemsin people
and for the Hemsin to give God the glory due His name.

From the Pastor’s Desk
In the recent election the candidates and issues certainly warranted our careful attention and consideration. Recently I read a
couple of interesting facts about Election Day itself. In 1845 the decision was made to put presidential elections on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The reason for November was that most Americans at that time were farmers and the
harvest was complete by November. But that is just half the story. Tuesday was chosen because voting took place at the county
seat and getting there often required extensive travel for many voters. To assure that worship would not be hindered or interrupted
on Sunday, Monday would be the day of travel so people could cast their ballot on Tuesday. Built into the electoral process is this
subtle reminder that worship is central to who we are as Americans. May it ever be so. [Let’s not let Election Day be moved to
Sunday as it is in many nations.]
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I encourage each of us to take some time to count our blessings. And I hope you can
celebrate the Lord’s goodness with your loved ones.
Let us also be very mindful of those in our world who have little or nothing for which to give thanks. A tangible expression of
our concern is our contribution to the World Hunger Offering. This Sunday bring your soup can banks or other monetary offering
in your World Hunger envelope. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce
thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 9:11, RSV).
I Have You in My Heart,
Dave Stanford

Honduras Mission Trip
July 6-13, 2013 The purpose of this mission trip is to enact the gospel of Christ to Hondurans in word and deed. Volunteer missionaries from South Carolina and Alabama will partner with the Jeremiah 29:11 Mission (http://jeremiah2911mission.com Facebook:www.facebook.com/JeremiahsMission) in the mountainous community of Santa Elena. Our team will have construction, medical, and children’s ministry components, and will be capped at 25 total people. The estimated cost is $1600, not including spending money, passport and immunizations. Youths between the ages of 15-18 are welcome! A parent or legal guardian must accompany them. Participant information papers are available at the FBC and The Bridge offices.
Contact Mark and Chris Bechtel for more information at 803-222-5813 or [email protected].
