“In fact, just after I joined Yamaha, Iworked in product planning. That expe-rience was fortunate in that it committedme to developing products from the per-spective of what the customer wants. Ibelieve I also inherited a spirit of ‘nocompromise’ from my predecessor, whohad practical experience in the premierclass of World GP road racing (formerGP500 class and current MotoGP). Themost important thing is meeting cus-tomers’ needs. In fact, I realized it was

performance of the original V-Boost.When the original VMAX went over6,000 rpm, two carburetors breathed intoeach cylinder. This was the V-Boost,which helped produce the bike’s awe-some acceleration. To exceed the initialbike, we worked to create a ‘Full-timeV-Boost’ that would provide searingacceleration at all engine speeds, not justin the high-speed range. As a way ofachieving this, we decided to incorporatewhat we call our ‘G.E.N.I.C.H.’ elec-tronic control technology.

“While our G.E.N.I.C.H.technologies are deployed inthe R series and elsewhere, they could not easily beapplied to the VMAX. Thisis because, unlike in-linefours where each cylinder iscontrolled on a single axisbasis, in a V4 the cylindersare arranged in pairs, necessi-tating twin axis control, which requires higher preci-sion.

to achieve power and comfort. Our taskwas to maintain and evolve the uniquecharacter of the original VMAX. Thechallenge was how to reconcile two con-flicting characteristics — awesomeacceleration and a comfortable ride.

“Looking just at acceleration, it wasdesirable to increase the front wheel’sdistributed load to give it more solidroad grip during acceleration. However, the V-engine was central to theVMAX’s identity and on top ofthat, the feeling of the rider strad-dling the engine was a key point.

In other words, moving the enginetoward the front wheel to get betteracceleration would detract from theVMAX’s character. We put a lot of ener-gy into balancing these two conflictingdemands.

The new model announced worldwide at 18:00 (GMT) on June 4 mounts a completely new 1679 cc, V4fuel-injected engine on an aluminum frame in a package that boasts awesome acceleration performance. Since the original VMAX appeared in 1985, its power, radical styling and comfort have won it many fans. The bike haspowerfully inspired and influenced the motorcycle world as a flagship product that exceeds the bounds of category, enginesize and model year. And now the VMAX has been reinvented, 24 years after its first appearance. While remaining faithfulto the original concept, the whole machine has evolved with the incorporation of such tech-nologies as leading-edge electronic control based on Yamaha’s G.E.N.I.C.H. engineering ideal. In this issue of Yamaha News we asked some of those involved in the bike’s development andmarketing for their thoughts and observations.

“We designers started by analyzing theappeal of the original VMAX. It was amodel designed like a hotrod cruiser, call-ing to mind images of a bodybuilder ordrag racing. Analyzing it still further, itlooked like the original VMAX was allengine. The main element was the senseof power emanating from the engine —including the air scoops — and the bodyparts and other components looked smallin comparison. This was the originalidentity we needed to preserve.

“To express the power encapsulated in anew, more powerful VMAX, we empha-sized the intake and exhaust airflow pass-ing through the machine. We gave evenmore thought to the flow of the air andgas components through the processes ofintake, combustion and discharge foreach of the four cylinders. The air scoopsand mufflers are delineated separately foreach cylinder. And through an interlink-ing shape inspired by an infinity signmotif, we also created an impression oflimitless power deriving from the airflowing into the engine that typifies theVMAX’s V4 power plant.

“In creating such a design form, we refer-enced sculptures and various other art-works and sports conveying a sense ofpower. In the course of this, we sought toexpress in the form powerful muscularbeauty, the beat of life, the expression ofthe instant where power is unleashed, andthe rippling tension of muscle. With thenew VMAX, it was decided to expressthe bulge of muscle. The number ofsketches we drew was huge.

“The swell of muscle is readily associatedwith the muscle of an athlete in a 100-meter sprint race. While the YZF-R1 andother models have parts that are inspiredby the muscular beauty of an athlete, theR1’s strong point is its nimble cornering.Drawing our imagery from athleticevents, the R1 represents the world of400-meter races with the cornering itinvolves. In contrast, the muscular beautyof the new VMAX resembles an athletewho runs 100 meters all out. It summonsforth extraordinary instantaneous powervery quickly and expresses muscularbeauty with the extraordinary tension ofthe moment the starting pistol rings out.

“The completed new design inherits thegenetic history of the original model. Theengine area appears large, with otherperipheral parts surrounding it. The newindividuality of the bike is its form basedon an image of the immensely powerfuldriving force of the rear wheel, whichbecomes torque, and accelerates forwardwhile seeming to push the front part ofthe chassis ahead of it. This image is verydifferent from that of its predecessor, which had the cruiser formula in its ori-gins and whose front seemed to rise up.

New VMAX designThe new VMAX body designcarries on the unique identityof the original VMAX. Thedesign visually accentuatesthe flow from intake toexhaust, integrated withexpression of the greatstrength harbored within themachine.

New-design V4 engineA new-design liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC, 65-degree V4, 4-valve engine isadopted to provide awesome acceleration feeling and powerful cruising perfor-mance. One of the new technical features that enabled the compact combustionchamber design is the new cam chain layout. In this system, the cam chain drivesonly the intake side. The exhaust side camshaft is driven by a gear mechanismfrom the intake side. This enables a better concentration of mass and makes it pos-sible to minimize the pitch between the intake and exhaust camshafts to enable amore compact design for the combustion chamber.

Newly designed aluminum frameA newly designed all aluminum frame has been adopted. The frame structure consists of gravity-cast hollow alu-minum stock for the main frame and a rear frame that iswelded together from CF aluminum die-cast parts andextruded aluminum parts. In particular, the optimum vary-ing of wall thickness in the main frame by increments ofjust a few millimeters, has made it possible to achievegood rigidity balance throughout the frame.

“The Venture Royale, launched on the USmarket in 1983, was a touring model to rideas far as the heart desires. You could easilynotch up five or six hundred kilometers aday on it, and it was Yamaha’s flagshipmodel at that time. The Venture Royale wascharacterized by luxury features suitable fortraveling first class with low engine rpm at aspeed of 55 mph or so. I had been in chargeof developing this bike, and when the dustsettled after its launch, I started to thinkabout using its V4 power plant to createnew value in the expanding US big bikemarket. One day, something happened thatclarified the direction we would take.

“It was May 1983. Having received propos-als from Yamaha Motor Corporation,U.S.A. (YMUS) and GK (Design), thedevelopment team went to Louisiana tocheck market trends. In New Orleans wesaw some bikers racing on a bridge, andwhat we saw convinced us of our directionand was the first sign of what wouldbecome the VMAX. On a Friday evening, some riders had gathered to race on thebridge, competing in straight-line accelera-tion. It was not about cornering, and notabout gracefully cruising on long, straightroads.

“This was all about the pleasure of straight-line acceleration and speed over just a fewhundred meters. At that time, drag racing inpassenger cars with large V8 engines waspopular in the United States. We started ourplanning with the idea of substituting thecars known as V8 hotrods — symbols ofpower — with bikes. We dubbed ourmachine the ‘VMAX,’ meaning ‘maxi-mum V power plant.’

“First of all, what should it look like? Wecreated the body design based on how visu-ally interesting we could make the flowfrom the air scoop to the engine andexhausts. At the same time, the key to thepower needed for fierce acceleration washow much power we could produce basedon the Venture Royale’s 1200cc engine. After a lot of advanced development, weadopted a system known as the ‘V-Boost,’which gave outstanding acceleration utiliz-ing the V4 engine’s firing interval. It was ameasure that used the resting carb that hadfinished its spray of atomized fuel to assistthe subsequent fuel atomization (spray) ofthe neighboring cylinder. This is somethingthat can’t be done with an in-line fourbecause of its structure.

“Over the 24 years since then, the VMAXhas been supported by fans around theworld. The main reasons are surely Yama-ha’s originality and the fact that no majorchanges have been made in the specs. In allhonesty, no such changes could have beenmade. The original VMAX could not havebeen exceeded through half-heartedchanges.

“And then this project finally came about. With the evolution and accumulation oftechnology over the past 24 years, we havebeen able to get over a high hurdle. Whilemany new technologies are incorporated inthe new VMAX, the basic development ori-entation has been to extend the original con-cept and create a model that maintainsYamaha’s originality. Even though the tech-nology evolves, this commitment neverchanges.

VMAX: US and European unveilingsCalifornia, U.S.A.The new VMAX was unveiled on the decommissioned US Naval aircraftcarrier USS Midway (the Midway Museum) in San Diego Bay. Around 70journalists and dealers gathered to see the new VMAX ridden into the pub-lic spotlight. A huge buzz went through the crowd as the machine made itsappearance, smoke billowing from its spinning rear tire. When ProjectLeader Nakaaki appeared the excitement enveloping the venue intensified.

In the United States, where the original VMAX has remained consistentlypopular, sales of the original model have totaled 38,000 over the past 24years. There are many owner groups all over the country, and the marquehas attracted a wide fan base, ranging from those who like to customize itto others who simply use it as a sports commuter.

About the new VMAX, dealers commented: “It’s an awesome product thathas remained true to the original style.” “The price is not cheap, but it fea-tures many technologies and offers high value.” “It will probably attract alarger base of new fans who will be different from the fans of the originalVMAX… But what is its quarter mile time?”

The special YMUS website for the new VMAX attracted 20,000 hits in justone day. Comments included: “I’m heading for the dealer today.” “Well thebike is definitely SWEET!!” “Now THAT’s a motorcycle! More along classiclines than the prototype suggested, I love it.”

Advance-order sales of a limited lot of 2,500 units of the new VMAX beganat the time of the launch, with customers putting down a $1,000 deposit atdealerships to ensure their order. In just three days more than 300 ordershad been received, indicating a good start for the new model on target forthe sales goal.

Near Madrid, Spain The venue for the European unveiling was an airport on a plain 100 kilome-ters north of Madrid. It was attended by around 150 media and dealer rep-resentatives from all around Europe. On the runway, which was surroundedby a display of drag racing four-wheelers, drag machines spurted fire asthey demonstrated their performance. Then the newly reborn VMAXloomed up from the opposite direction. At the same time, seven jetsappeared in the skies overhead, thrilling the crowd with a flying demonstra-tion.

Up to now, more than 40,000 of the original VMAX have been sold inEurope. France, Germany, Italy and other countries have owners’ clubswith memberships totaling some 2,700 Europe-wide. The Italian club is anofficial Yamaha club and holds club meetings and events regularly. Theunveiling of the new VMAX was set against the backdrop of this deep-seat-ed popularity of the original VMAX in Europe.

In the week after the unveiling, Yamaha dealers were inundated withinquiries. In that week alone, the three countries received 200 – 300inquiries each, which was extremely gratifying. Rather than making sales atshowrooms, high-powered displays have been held at exhibitions andevents using a specially outfitted VMAX truck. Customers who make asales decision then make their purchase via the Internet. The first displaysare to be rolled out in June and July in Germany, France, and Italy.

“In the first year, the VMAX was launchedin the United States. The following yearwhen it was launched in Europe, its unique
