Sermon Title Suggestions—Recently there was a conversation around sermon titles. It spurred an idea that we ask YOU to title our sermons after listening to them! If you’d like to participate, please write your suggestion on the back of a prayer card that you find in the pew – you can even include a prayer on the front side if you’d like! Put your sugges-tion in a box by the bulletins after the service. The preacher will select a title from the suggestions and put the title on Facebook, Twitter on Mon-day and in the weekly email that comes out on Friday. A New Kind of Christianity—If you are interested in reading A New Kind of Christianity by Brian McLaren there will be a discussion of this book on Wednesday, June 5, 6pm @ Corner Bakery located at 777 6th St. NW. This book thoughtfully explores the roots of discontent with church/religion and explores possible insights for renewal. Here is a quote from the book; if this inspires you, connects with you, angers you, consider reading the book and join us for conversation! “Wherever the willingness to rethink has been squelched, wherever that sense of quest has been buried under convention and complacency, the Christian faith in all its forms in in trouble. But even there, something is trying to be born. Even now, right here, among us, inside you, inside me. You may feel it as a curiosity, a desire for better answers than you inherited so far. You may experience it as frustration, knowing that there must be more to faith than you currently know. You may know it as hope, hope that God is seeking humble people whose hearts and lives can be the womb of a better future…In you, your family, your faith community, and circles of friends, among people of peace and faith everywhere, something is trying to be born.” Please talk with Chris Orvin, Kari Lundstad-Vogt or Pastor Wendy for more information. One copy of the book is available for borrowing from Pastor Wendy.

Presiding Bishop's 2013 Easter Message
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Easter. It is about more than an open tomb. It is the good news of the risen Christ who opens lives. Think about Jesus' friends after his death. Their lives were closed down by fear, disappointment and confusion. The risen Christ ap-peared saying "peace be with you" and opened their lives with a lib-erating word of reconciliation. In the same way Christ opens your life with a baptismal promise that joins your life to his death and resur-rection. "You are my child. Nothing in all creation will separate you from my love." Even now Christ is opening your life, your daily work, your passions and imagination. Christ is opening your daily life into a holy calling that fills the world with love. At the Lord’s table, Christ is opening you into a community that can bear even suffering with confidence, and sorrow with hope. The risen Christ opens the Scriptures — the full depth of God's prom-ise made to Sarah and Abraham now coming to life in the new crea-tion. Even when everything else is being stripped away, the risen Christ opens you to God's promised future. Christ opens you to God's work of forgiveness and reconciliation. Je-sus Christ, raised from the dead, is opening this way of life for you. In God's grace,
The Rev. Mark S. Hanson Presiding Bishop Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

First Trinity & St. Matthews Lutheran Members and friends: Happy Spring to you all. The CROP Walk sponsored through the Church World Services (CWS) will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Please be sure to see Tammy Greene to sign up to walk and receive a form to collect donations. We have about four weeks to col-lect donations and turn them in for tallying and confirmation. The CROP Walk is an ecumenical, nation-wide effort involving over 2000 communities who walk during the year. As a congregation we have participated and supported the CROP Walk for over five years. Of the funds collected 25% goes toward two local chari-ties: Martha's Table and DC Hunger Solutions. The remaining funds goes to the CWS to help women and children in underdevel-oped countries. The walk is about 3.2 miles and this represents the distance women and children in underdeveloped countries must walk daily to collect clean water used to cook, clean, and bathe. In Ameri-ca we turn on a faucet or spigot and water pours out; unfortunately they do not have the luxury of something so basic and expected in the United States of America. If you cannot walk or are not available to walk please donate to some-one in the congregation who is walking. You may also donate to the children in Sunday School; in the past they have taken up a collection and donated the funds to the CROP Walk through Sebastian Gor-don. Last year they collected $70 which was a big help towards Se-bastian's total donation. Thanks again for your time and donations.

April 25 was World Malaria Day, and Sunday, April 28 was ELCA Malaria Sunday. The ELCA reports that it has raised in excess of $6 million toward its $15 million goal. Our Metropolitan DC Synod has set a goal for our Synod of $250,000 and of 100% participation by our congrega-tions. Bishop Gra-ham reports that we
have raised a little more than $149,000 since the campaign started in 2012. Across the U.S., Lutherans have been coming together to raise awareness and funds to fight malaria — a preventable, treatable dis-ease that claims the life of a child in Africa every single minute. But is our malaria work making a difference? Yes! For example, in partner-ship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) the number of children in Tanzania under the age of five that are using bed nets to protect them from mosquito bites rose from 66 to 89 per-cent! Nearly 1.2 million people have been reached with education on malaria prevention and control messages through Sunday school classes. Our support is making an impact in Mali too! For exam-ple, Parents reporting their children under 5 years old slept under a bed net the night before is now 99%. We’re also making progress in Burkina Faso, Kenya and Uganda. But we can’t stop here! Until malaria deaths are a thing of the past, there’s still plenty of work to do. The Malaria Campaign runs until 2015, so we have plenty of time to exceed this goal. In an area like ours, where each of us really knows people who have had this disease or had to take drugs to prevent it, exceeding our goal ought to be our goal. During the Month of May First Trinity will be asking you to consider making a donation to the ELCA Malaria campaign please consider it and give from your heart.
