Jana Panem, a student at Madonna Catholic Secondary School, won a nationwide contest for young artists to design a Google doodle — the banner atop the search engine home page. Panem's design, titled A Bright Future, is being featured on Wednesday.

"I wanted to showcase what I think Canada would be in the future in 150 years," Panem told CBC Toronto. "I have a very optimistic view of Canada. I see it as a country with many in-novations and a lot of advanced technology."

Mrs. Reis’ and Mrs. Myrda’s Kindergarten Class Summary The school year is almost over. Let’s reflect on some of the many things that happened in ELP1 this year. We’ve played, discovered, investigated, inquired, learned, researched, predicted, hypothesized, practiced, shared, created, encouraged, cared, engaged, provoked, questioned, wondered, observed, listened, discussed, noticed, described, compared, interpreted, participated, and most importantly we’ve grown. We’ve grown out of many shoes, shirts and pants (we’re sure) but we’ve grown in other more substantial ways too. We’ve grown in how we express our feelings and we’ve grown in how we make and keep friendships. We’ve also grown in how we question the world around us and we’ve grown in our relationship to God. Whether your child has made leaps and bounds in one area or has taken baby steps, celebrate the many ways that they have grown during this year, each in their own special way. During the 2017 school year, there has been so many activities that has made our year exciting and eventful. In September, we had the Fun Fair. Not even the rain could dampen the mood at Holy Angels. The Halloween Dance was in October and we showed that the kindergartens could definitely “bust a move”. Next came the Christmas concert in December. The students were so excited to perform the song “I Want to be an Elf.” In January, we had Scientist Grace come in and talk to us about the wonders of magnets. Bonhomme made an ap-pearance in February for Carnaval and we had an amazing time playing some outdoor games and drinking hot chocolate. In March, our duck eggs arrived. We began the count down to the hatching of our ducklings! The students were so excited upon arrival on April 18th and 19th, 6 out of 7 ducklings had hatched! Our class had grown in numbers just like that! In May, we performed a song and poem during the Rosary celebration. We also went on our first trip to the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. Finally, we have our second trip to our annual picnic in June. A time to relax, have some fun and reminisce on a year gone by. So many wonderful memories to take with us for a very long time. We hope you’ve enjoyed watching your child

learn and grow this year. Thank-you to all of our parents who have been understanding, cooperative, and

supportive throughout this whole year.

End of the Year Summary - Ms. Nifo & Mrs. Sitko

Wow, it’s already June! Time really flies when you’re having fun!

The students have grown and learned so much this year! From the beginning with Mrs. Dos Santos where the students entered a new classroom with excitement and wonder to the

last four months with Ms. Nifo where the students are now ready to enter Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1! Congratulations boys and girls! Ms. Nifo and Mrs. Sitko are very proud of all of you!

We began the term learning about and preparing for Lent and Easter and ended the year at our Celebration Picnic where we wished the Senior Kindergartens the best of luck as they enter grade one.

In March, we were blessed with visitors from the farm. The students entered the classroom eagerly everyday to see the progress of our duck friends and they excitedly counted down the days until they hatched. They gave Rosey, Nike, Yellow Socks and Jack so much love and attention. It was hard to watch them go but the students made sure they gave them a warm goodbye. This brought us to April and May where students took part in many different activities and celebrations such as the dance program, many presentations and our Rosary Celebration. They learned many styles of dance, including Latin and African and enjoyed presenta-tions such as the Dairy Farmers of Canada. We can’t forget about all of the inquires. The kindergartens had so many questions and learned so much about the world through our Cheetah, Duck and Under the Sea inquiries. They loved to watch and see how Mrs. Sitko transformed the dramatic centre to match our theme. Finally, we have come to June… after all the hard work… reading, writing, math and more, this term has come and gone (too fast). We wish we could spend so much more time with the students. Congratulations to a successful year! We wish you all the best next year and always!

Mrs. Cosentino’s & Mrs. Esteban’s Kindergarten Class It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived! It has been such a wonder-ful year. So many things have been learned this year. We learned what it meant to sit in a circle, walk in a line, use scissors, zip up our coat, and be part of a group. We learned how to read, write our names, became mathematicians, scientists, inquirers and how to be a friend. We took turns, worked through problems and practiced patience.

From the Fun Fair at the beginning of the year to the Year End Celebration Picnic– our students have been involved in so many activities. One of our favourite moments from this year was the school’s Christmas Concert. It was a huge hit. We had so much fun on our 100th day of school! We celebrated being 100 days smarter by dressing as 100 year olds- there is nothing cuter then a class full of 5 and 6 year olds dressed up like old men and women! This year we had so much fun during our units of inquiry where we journeyed back to the time of the dinosaurs. The children enjoyed digging for fossils. We transformed our classroom into a museum complete with a giant dinosaur skeleton. We studied volcanoes and the students erupted with excitement as we added vinegar and baking soda. They wanted to see the fizzing volcano more then once, which led to an afternoon of giggles. We explored simple machines with our Scientist Grace. We had fun learning about levers and gears with our energetic parent helpers. We also observed the seasons and had so much fun planting and seeing our class garden bloom. We also watched as our ducks hatched this year. From the very first day the eggs were delivered there was a buzz of excitement and anticipation. Each morning, we immediately popped in to check how things were going. Lots of questions and answers generated a huge amount of great learning in our class. Our discussions were richer because of our 3 little visitors. We were all touched by this "miracle". It has been an experience that will stay with us for a long time. As the school year winds down, we see how far they have come and grown from the start of the school year. The chil-dren have had many exciting opportunities to learn and experience new things. They are well prepared for the next year of school. Have a great summer!

Mr. Sloan’s Grade 4 Year End Summary

This year was an amazing year with Mr. Sloan and all of our classmates! We went on fantastic trips, we did many art projects, had fun workshops, but we cannot forget our awesome student teachers!

At the zoo, we learned about animal habitats and human body systems. When we went skiing at Glen Eden, we had so much fun learning how to ski, while others got to ski on the big hills. We also went to Mississauga Living Arts Centre with the other junior classes to attend art and drama workshops. Our class created beautiful paintings of landscapes and learned about using tableau to re- create fairy tales . A scientist came into our classroom and allowed us to explore pulleys and gears. One of our favourite activities was celebrating Canada’s 150

th birthday. As a class we did

150 push ups, 150 sit ups, 150 box jumps, 150 laps of the gym and 150 jumping jacks! Last, but not least, we had amazing student teachers- Mr. Thomas and Mr. Graham. They taught us new things and we will never forget them.

Thank you Mr. Sloan for making this year one that we will never forget! SCHOOLS OUT!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Avila’s Grade 2/3 Class Family

Split classes are awesome. We learned Grade 3 instead of Grade 2 work sometimes. Mrs. Avila likes teaching a 2/3 split. She did chocolate bar math, with real Kit Kats! (NICO) My best moments were when we made slime, planted wild flowers and had dance parties. (GABRIELLA) We had really good trips this year. We went to watch “Matilda”. We went to Harbourfront and the Toronto Zoo. (AVA) I had a few best moments this year like winning many contests and being Teacher for the Day. I got to skip French and go to the staffroom. This year we did recycling Public Service Announcements. It was fun! (CAMILLA) Mrs. Avila made it rain in the classroom, it was so fun. We all were so excited! (SOREYA) In my Grade 2/3 class, I liked doing robotics and I had fun with my friends. (AADEN) I liked all the different characters that came in for Halloween like a fairy Godmother, Dorothy, Elvis and more. (CATHERINE) We had a pizza party because we brought in so many pounds of food for the food drive. (JULIAN) I love having dance parties because we dance and put on the spot lights. (MARCELLA) Matthew and Camilla were Teachers for the Day. They made us do lots of Language and Math and they gave us DPA. (STEVEN) I like being in a Grade 2/3 split because I met some new friends and I kind of felt like a role model. (MATTHEW) I really enjoyed our school year together. I will miss the students and their families very much. We are a great class family! (MRS. AVILA)

Our year in Grade 3/4 was Awesome (Mrs. Suraci)

At the beginning of this year, we met our new teacher Mrs. Suraci. When we started school, we made new friends and talked with old friends. We got to know a few students new to the school; Ana, Katerin, Andy, Francesco, Ethan and Liam. By October, we were all used to each other.

In October we went to Harbourfront and learned how Inuit people lived. We also did art with fabrics.

In November we had Remembrance Day and we watched a special video during an assembly. We also got pop-pies.

Also in November we celebrated Halloween by having a healthy Halloween party. We were dressed in our cos-tumes and read our monologues to the class and we had a dance. Then it was advent. We put up our advent wreath, we lit the candles each week and we said a prayer each week too. In December Mrs. Suraci threw a Christ-mas party for us and then we had a two-week break.

In the New Year, we went on a ski/snowboard trip that was awesome. We had a celebration on Valentines Day; we made tissue paper hearts and put them on our classroom windows.

After the March Break we had Easter and made cards for our families. For Mother’s day we made ice cream cone art, In June we we planted seeds in small pots for everyone in the class. We watered them daily. Also in June, we went to Kortright Centre. The grade four’s learned more about habitats and the grade three’s learned more about plants and we all learned a lot about bees!

We did a lot of work in Mrs. Suraci’s class. We did lots of writing every morning; we wrote letters, we interviewed our classmates, we wrote journals, we wrote persuasive arguments and we did so much more. We read the book ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ and we read the book ‘Wonder.’ We had a Scientist in the class-room for both grade three and grade four. We learned a lot this year in 3/4. The end of the year is a fun and re-laxing time. At this time we have extra D.P.A. and we get to play board games. It was a great year and we look forward to our summer break!

Mrs. Galica’s Grade 1 Class – Class Summary 2017

We can’t believe grade one has come to an end! Where did the time go? There must have been a lot going on for us not to notice that it’s already June. But that’s good. We were busy learning. And BOY, did we learn! We arrived in room 122B in September, many of us just learning to read and write, nervous about what life beyond kindergarten would be like. But now, almost 10 months later, we look back on how far we’ve come and it’s truly amazing. Just think…we can all write sentences now, and paragraphs too! Our reading has also really improved. We practiced at school and at home and now we can make sense of all those words that just seemed like a jumble of letters before. Every day our “schema” grew as we learned about math, science, social studies, reading, writing, media, religion, art, gym, drama, dance, art, health, French…and so much more. The school year started off with a wonderful fun fair where we saw lots of our friends and enjoyed a fun-filled day. As our word study and shared reading homework programs began, Fall arrived and we started learning about the seasons. Before we knew it, Thanksgiving was here, followed soon by Halloween where we got to dress up in costumes, enjoy a school dance, and listen to each other’s very first monologues. Soon after we learned about war veterans and what Remembrance Day was all about, and then we started getting ready for Advent and Christmas. We learned about Baby Jesus and sang “The Little Drummer Boy” at the school concert. In the new year we had some winter fun at the Bonhomme Carnaval and the Valentine’s dance. Before we knew it, March Break was here and Spring had arrived. We learned about the life of Jesus and the meaning of Easter. Soon Mothers Day and Fathers Day we here, and we were preparing for the end-of-year school Mass. By now we had learned about different artists, how to use colours, our local community, energy, matter and materials, animals, doing surveys, 2-D and 3-D shapes, how to add and subtract, capacity and mass, symmetry, rules and responsibilities, Canadian coins, different virtues of the month, keeping promises, making healthy food choices, personal safety, singing O Canada and saying the Hail Mary in French, and so, so, much more! We enjoyed special visitors like Officer Rich, the Bee Man, the Scientist in the Class, the firefighter, and the wheelchair basketball players. We also enjoyed a trip to Springridge Farm, Reading Buddies, using the ipads, seeing the Earth Day movie, hamburger and pizza days, hot lunches, cookie and movie day, learning about Canada and its 150th birthday, and the end-of-year play day. And who could forget Mr. Law, Ms. McNaughton and Ms. Obazei, who came to our class from York University and Humber College to learn. Phew!! It was a very busy year indeed! We made new friends, lost some front teeth, grew out of our clothes a little, became more responsible, and learned to work together. We donated food, and raised money with our dress-down days to help needy people. Then we ended off the school year by presenting the final school Mass. What an awesome time we had in grade one. Now we are all set for grade two, but first…a good rest and some summer fun!

Mrs. Gaglia’s Grade One Class

What a wonderful year in grade one! When we first started in September we were a little scared, but we quickly became more comfortable being in grade one. We began our year with Mr. E as our teacher, and we ended school this year with Mrs. Gaglia as our teacher. We also had Miss. Dzubina in our class, she was a student teacher. All of our teachers this year helped us learn so many new things. We have grown so much! We all know how to read and write, and do our math in so many different ways. We got to learn at school and places outside of school. We watched the movie Born in China at the theater, and we visited Springridge Farm to learn about animals. We liked to learn about science. We also got to participate in fun activities at school like the Christmas concert, Carnaval and dances for Halloween and Valentine’s Day. A dance teacher taught us a Bollywood dance, which was a lot of fun! The Scientist visited our class and taught us many interesting things about energy. The stations she had were really cool! We are happy that we had so many great experiences in grade one. We hope everyone has a happy summer break and we will all see you back in grade two!

Mrs. Neri’s Grade 7/8 Class My Grade 8 Year- Evan M. Holy Angels is more than just a school, it's a family. I am so very grateful to call the group of kids I hang out with on a daily basis my

friends. Throughout the years that I have been at this school I have experienced joy, happiness, sadness, and friendship. I couldn't be

more lucky to be in such a great environment and loving family, our school. Although there has been several ups and downs we always

find a way to work things out and move on.

Now let's go back to the first day of school, it was very emotional for several of people with classrooms and friends, the end of summer

and in general having to do something for the first time in two months! I thought being in a split class with a younger grade would be a

nightmare and would be terrible, however I was wrong being in the class I am in has made my grade 8 year better than I expected it would

be.

Being in grade 8 has given me so many more opportunities to be a leader from things as little as being on the milk team and setting up for

hamburger day to things like being the captain of the volleyball and soccer teams. This year has given everyone so many opportunities and

experiences one of them being our graduation trip. Ottawa was amazing and so much fun I wish i could go back and do it again...except

for the long bus rides and getting up early every morning. Things like school dances, fun days and trips are what made our year our year.

I can honestly say that I will miss attending Holy Angels next year. I will miss everyone in our grade and wish the best of luck to every-

one’s futures in high school and hope to stay close with everyone like the Holy Angels family we are.

Grade 7 was an amazing year! It was full of amazing adventures like Mansfield, sports team victories, new students and our amazing Halloween dance. Mansfield was a different experience that was so much fun. We got to room with our friends, go on walks by ourselves and go on a night hike. It was fun because for some of us it was the first time away from home without our family. Now let’s talk about our sports teams. The swim team this year did an amazing job of bringing Holy Angels back a huge trophy, and once again the grade 7 girls relay team won 1st place. The boys and girls soccer teams both did really well and they both got to the last round. For the boys they won every game and came first, to then go to regionals, and for the girls we got to the last game vs St. Clement. It was a hard team but through it all we had hope. Unfortunately, we lost and placed 2nd in the finals. We had so much fun at the Halloween Dance. All of the grade 7s got to carve pumpkins and they were displayed in the gym for the dance. We even got a special DJ to play music during the day. We had great music and a great time at the dance with

our friends. This year was so much fun and I can guarantee that this year was unlike any other. By Olivia D.

Ms. Bellini, Mrs.McKeon and Mrs. Hanna’s Class

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived, ten months have passed very quickly. The year’s end always brings with it a tremendous sense of accomplishment. We began in September where we made new friends and began learn-ing and growing. Each day brought excitement and new experiences.

In the Fall, we celebrated Thanksgiving and Halloween. We talked about what we were thankful for and enjoyed showing off our Halloween costumes at the school dance. As a class, we celebrated the birth of Jesus and our families enjoyed our Christmas Concert. Spring brought us into Lent, Easter, new beginnings and our participation in the Rosary Mass.

We learned and experienced so much through our inquiries as we explored: penguins, hibernation, migration, continents, plants, insects to name a few. One of our most exciting inquiries began with the arrival of our duck eggs and we experienced the wonders of new life. We counted down the days and watched as we anticipated the arrival of Primrose, Cutie Pie, Dot-tie, Tweeter and Sparkle. We studied the life cycle of other animals and insects and also learned the difference between ovip-arous and viviparous animals. We learned to be bucket fillers and treat each other with kindness and respect.

It has been our pleasure and privilege to watch your child’s character, personality and intellect develop day by day as we learned new things together. We thank the parents for all their support and for entrusting your child with us. Congratula-tions for a successful year and we wish you a wonderful summer vacation.

Our “BIG” Learning The Grade 3 Superstars celebrate their year with Big Learnings.

Year End Summary- Grade 5 - Mrs. Grosso/Mrs. Borg

Mr. Scatozza’s Grade 8 Class

Our Grade 8 year has been very eventful. We have gone from marshalling at Cross Country to Ottawa. In September/October, we went to go help the Cross Country runners go in the right direction, we had lots of fun helping out all the kids and we had lots of stories to share later on in class!! In November, our class was in charge of running the Remembrance Day ceremony, we payed homage to the thousands of Canadians who died, especially because it was the 100th year anniversary of Vimy Ridge. In December, we watched a lot of Christmas movies and made styrofoam and sequin ornaments. Then the second part of our year started, we went snow tubing at Snow Valley in February. I had so much fun running as fast as I can to get in line again, did you know you can snow tube in a group of 8!! So much fun!! Now ballroom was coming up, I think we were all excited to see Ms. Alexandra again, who makes anything fun!! We practiced for most of May and then performed in front of our families. Now all everybody could think of was Ottawa, the best part of Ottawa was eating dinner, because we were all pretty hungry. But going to the Supreme Court of Canada and participating in a mock trial was awesome too. We also had free time at Byward Market to souvenir shop for our families. At the start of the trip we were all pretty hyped but on the bus ride home we were all exhausted and it took all of our willpower not to fall asleep when we arrived at school. Overall I think our grade 8 year was a very memorable one and definitely one to never forget. We have made so many memories this year and learned so much which we know will carry with us throughout life. Although we are sad to leave, we are all excited to see what high school has in store for us.

Mrs. Varone-Torchia’s Class

Dear Parents,

It seems as though just yesterday I was in the school yard introducing myself to all of you. I re-member feeling nervous and anxious that day. Now ten months later Holy Angels has become like a home to me.

This year has been absolutely amazing. You have such wonderful children! Their enthusiasm for learning has made me a better teacher. Their kindness to one another has made me a better person.

I would like to thank you for your hospitality, generosity, and support throughout this year. I enjoyed all of our conversations and getting to know both you and your child.

I asked your children what were some of their most memorable moments this school year and they replied:

Presenting Halloween Monologues and Procedural Writing to the class. Learning how to write paragraphs, friendly letters, procedural writing, and poetry. Getting letters from Santa Claus. Choral reading “The Special Baby.” (So proud!) Learning how to make inferences and connections using information from the text and your own ideas. (Some

of your children actually said this!) Having fun learning about Math. Doing the CAT4 test. (Yes, your children thought it was fun!). Going to Harbourfront and learning to Hip Hop. (Great moves!) Receiving their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. (Very special!) Going to the Zoo and seeing the Snow Leopards and the Pandas. (The cutest!) Creating American Gothic Parodies and Picasso Portraits. (So creative!) Having our classmates be a part of our day. (Super sweet!) Getting together every Friday to discuss the Learning Skills and naming the “Bucket Fillers” for the week. (My

favourite!)

And this is just to name a few!

Your children have brought a smile to my face and a warmth in my heart. I will truly miss them next year! I am so proud of all of their accomplishments.

Thank you once again for raising such amazing children!

Ms. Agozzino’s Grade 7 Class By Alessia P, Megan I, and Simona T I cannot believe we are writing this in June, this year has gone by way too soon. With lots of fun and learning too, many fun things we had to do. There were many new additions to our class this year and they became our friends that we held dear. We started the “oh so exciting “year with Mr. Volante as our teacher. The first two months we got to take it easy, before we knew it, it was November. Our first overnight school trip was near! We were all so excited to go, despite having to leave our parents. At Mansfield many new friends were made. After the outdoor team activities we felt more connected to each other and nature. Then December rolled around and we had our two week winter break. Our first term report cards came in February, along with our new teacher Ms. Agozzino. Ms. Agozzino was able to accompany us on our snow tubing trip! In April we celebrated our religious holiday of Easter by visiting Don Bosco for the passion play. Some of us were dreading May and some of us could not wait. We had our Ballroom program! Do not get us wrong, we love Miss Alexandra’s teaching, but some of us were nervous to show off our skills. When Parish day came we were excited to gather in the Gym to watch Father play Volleyball! Last but not least, June. We worked on a cool and educational project called My Original Artwork. We all got to create our own masterpieces within a general criteria. We cannot thank our teachers enough for all they taught us. We have had such an amazing and successful year, we will miss you over the summer and we hope to see you next year!

Mrs. Malowany's Grade 5/6 Class

Wow, what an amazing year we had! So many new things over the past ten months. On behalf of all the grade 5s and 6s, we can say we had the best teachers this year who taught us so many important skills. The year flew quickly! For example, reading "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens," by Sean Covey really opened our eyes to communication with others and understanding ourselves as well. All our amazing inquiry projects were a fun way to collect research and learn concepts. Our favourite projects were the Grade 5 3D Structures/Landmark projects and the Grade 6 Space research tasks. Work is fun and all, but the field trips were spectacular! We loved skiing/snowboarding, the Toronto Zoo trip where we learned about many species of animals, and the Living Arts Centre work-shops. The drama workshop and drawing with wire was great! Although we had an awesome year full of laughter and friendships, we are excited to grow and proceed to an-other year of fun and excitement. Thank you Mrs. Malowany for a memorable year. We will take all you taught us (the tools and strategies) and put it to good use. Bye for now! Happy Summer!

TCDSB COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT

Office of the Chair of the Board

June 13, 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff and Students: We are pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Rory McGuckin as the new Director of Education for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, effective August 1, 2017.

Mr. McGuckin has been a key member of the senior administrative team since 2010, most recently serving as Associate Director of Academic Affairs. A highly respected educator, he has worked in various capaci-ties within the MSSB/TCDSB for 33 years. Prior to his appointment as Associate Director, Mr. McGuckin served as Superintendent of Human Resources and Labour Relations, and held other crucial leadership portfolios supporting the Board’s work as head of the Safe Schools Department, overseeing governance and policy development, and direct responsibilities for Parent Engagement and Community Relations. As a graduate of TCDSB, he brings a unique and intimate perspective having attended St. An-drew Catholic School and Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School.

This decision is the result of a comprehensive process undertaken by an Executive Search Committee comprised of members of the Board of Trustees. We want to convey our appreciation to the international executive search firm, retained by the Board, for their expertise and due diligence in guiding our work to find the best candidate. Our thanks also go out to the many Catholic community stakeholders and staff who participated in the initial engagement and consultation phase. Your feedback, thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.

At this time, we want to acknowledge Angela Gauthier’s lifelong contributions to the success of our Board as a tireless and passionate advocate for the academic achievement and wellbeing of our students throughout her 40 year career. She leaves the TCDSB well positioned for future success as the Board con-tinues its mission to graduate students who are ready to transform the world through witness, faith, inno-vation and action.

Please join all of us in extending our congratulations and best wishes to Mr. McGuckin as he assumes this new role leading our Board forward through our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, with its continued focus on Catholic School Graduate Expectations, student success and achievement.

Efforts are already underway to ensure a smooth transition over the summer months in preparation for the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year in September. Thank you for your continued support and faith in the TCDSB and Catholic Education. Sincerely

Angela Kennedy Nancy Crawford Chair of the Board Chair, Executive Search Committee
