Music Ministry Notes Chancel Choir Spring Concert: On May 17 at 7:00 p.m. you have the opportunity to hear choral music that you may have never before experienced.

Our Chancel Choir will present two choral works in a jazz style. Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass is a jazz setting of the Latin mass that is fun and profound all at the same time. Rob Landes’ Images is a four-movement piece that is almost entirely in scat, a vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all (think doo bee doo bee doo.)

Both of these choral works are beautiful, and we will be accompanied by a jazz combo of piano, drums and bass. We will even have the opportunity to hear the combo play some pieces on their own. This will be a wonderful spring evening of delightful music that will inspire and enliven those who listen to it. We hope to see you here! Once again, our music ministry will offer a Children’s Music, Drama and Art Camp. Taking place June 15-19, children in rising second through sixth grades will participate in crafts, music, and drama to present the children’s musical, The Tale of Three Trees on Sunday, June 21. Brochures are available at the Welcome Desk, on our website, or you may call the Music Ministry office, 704.366.7442.

About United Methodism

The General Conference is the primary legislative body of The United Methodist Church – the only body that speaks officially for the church. It meets every four years – meeting next in 2016 in Portland. The denomination’s “supreme court” is the Judicial Council, which interprets church law and determines constitutionality of proceedings at all levels of church life. Its nine members are elected by General Conference and normally meet twice per year. To learn more about the structure of the denomination, visit Methodism 101 at www.umc.org.

“I love being at this church. I have spent my whole life here, seeing all the changes and growth. It excites me that I and my family can be a part of it.

I am the Office Coordinator for the church and always happy to assist anyone whenever I can. I also assist the senior pastors, supervise our administrative staff, coordinate the Welcome Desk volunteers, prepare all the statistical and year-end reports for our Conference as well as help all the major committees with any administrative needs. I am also working on the new pictorial directory (don't worry, it's coming soon!)

When not playing handbells at church, I love spending time with my husband, Matthew, and our four children. We love doing anything outdoors and our kids keep us very active!”

Beyond Ourselves: March Stewardship Report How was our stewardship for the month of March?

Financial Faithfulness: Congregational giving was lower than what we anticipated and needed for the month ($27,000), and expenses were slightly higher, leaving us in a deficit position for March. Year-to-date, expenses remain lower than budgeted and we remain in a favorable cash position, despite the fact that congregational giving is lower than what we need year-to-date. Congregational giving has increased slightly from last year, and this is encouraging. An amount of $50,348 was spent in March in support of global and local missions.

Worship Faithfulness: Our average attendance for March was 837, a 31.4% increase over this time last year.

Ministry Faithfulness: These are just some of the ways that God has been working at Providence in March. Our littlest ones learned about giving back and helping others through our Weekday School Trike-A-Thon, which

raised over $5,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

The Clothes Closet at our St. John’s Campus continues to help many families in our community with gently-used clothing.

Our children’s choir participated in a musical, fellowship, and spiritual retreat with several other churches.

The Net worship service had the opportunity to experience God through the visual arts with artist Brynn Gillette.

Our Palm Sunday parade and Sunday School had a record number of children participating.

Discipleship Faithfulness: Our average Sunday School attendance for March was 607, a 6.7% increase over last year.

A one-page summary of March expenses can be found at the Welcome Desk. Detailed financial statements for the month of March are in ministry mailboxes, or are available by contacting Rev. Leigh Anne Hagerman.

Facility News This month you will see some new campus maintenance and improvement projects.

The large columns at the front Sanctuary doors facing Providence Road are being stripped, sealed, caulked, and repainted. The entrance will also be pressure washed. This process will take about a month to complete and there will be scaffolding in this area to do the repairs. Our columns were last repainted about twelve years ago and this refresh is a bit overdue.

In addition, Trustees have had requests for the addition of hand rails near steps in the parking lot. We have contracted with a railing vendor and he is in the process of fabricating and installing them.

New lighting and ceiling tiles, as well as staff office doors, are being replaced in some areas of the children's wing this month as well.

The Trustees’ goal is to keep our facilities clean, functional, and safe for all who come to our campus. Thank you for your patience as we work to keep our church in good order.

Leadership Providence 2015 Class Graduates 24

Congratulations are in order to 24 new Leadership Providence 2015 graduates! Our newest leaders received their certificates of completion April 23. Rev. John Fitzgerald and Dave Sanderson, a survivor of the Miracle on the Hudson flight, offered an inspiring graduation program.

Graduates attended a 16-hour course that focused on missions, administration and finance, stewardship, small groups, situational leadership, the history of Methodism and the history of Providence UMC. Over 20 current Providence UMC leaders served as facilitators and instructors. Each participant was given an individualized leadership assessment by Providence member Jane Howard.

"I was gratified that so many members want to commit (or re-commit) their time, talents and resources as Providence UMC leaders," said Owens. "Such a detailed and rich program would have been impossible without many of our current leaders offering their perspectives and assistance."
