Shalom, May was another successful month. The month started with a Lag B’Omer picnic attended by over 130 people and was sponsored by the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club. Thank you Bob Rothman, Helene Mendelson, Gayle Savitz, Linda Schultz and their committee. A member perk that was very well attended was the free for members Fusion Machine Band Concert. Guests paid $10. Thank you Paulette Ballin and your committee. Thank you Rabbi Adler and Cantor Beleniski for leading inspiring Shavuot services. STEPPING UP – Thank you Nancy and Jack Bushinsky for your very generout donation to ensure the success and continuation of the Scholar in Residence program for many years to come.

YOUR BOARD AT WORK: Temple Anshei Shalom made a donation of almost $2400 to the Jacobson Family Food Bank of the Ruth and Norman Rales Jewish Family Services. This money was collected on Purim (when we collect for the poor) and what was left from the Matzo Fund. We have had a few problems getting notification to our congregants about what’s happening at TAS. Right now, in addition to the KOL, the Shabbat Bulletin, flyers, our web site, phone blasts, we also have eblasts (flyers on email). Some members have complained that they were not notified about Temple happenings. We have found that some of these people have asked to be taken off the email list and then are upset when they aren’t notified. If you are not receiving the eblast, and would like to, please let the Temple office know your current email address. We are working to make the ticket office more efficient in both room layout and selling of tickets.

REMEMBER Morning and evening minyans continue during the summer. We are in need of members to attend these minyans so that those who wish to say Kaddish can do so. Services are at 8:30 am and 5:00 pm in the Chapel. The Temple is open all summer. Please join us for services, classes, movies and social events. Have a great summer. See you in Temple. Kol Tov

Notes From Chicago

When you hear the words “Conservative Judaism” it is usually an occasion for hand wringing, and kvetching about the dismal future of our movement. But having recently returned from the Rabbinical Assembly Convention in Chicago, the association of Conservative Rabbis, I am more optimistic about us than I would have ever imagined. The Jewish People, unlike Egypt and the ancient civilizations that we encountered, were not focused upon kings and royalty. Our Torah concerns itself with the average, regular person, and concerns itself with their needs. The treasure we possess is Torah. And it is reflected in the adage of Hillel, “that which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow man”. The hallmark of our movement is really summed up in one word, kindness, about how we can bring meaning and joy to every Jew. These past 50 years have brought us equal rights for women and inclusion for our LGBT children. The challenge before the Conservative Movement today is to find a way to discuss and build consensus on how to appropriately find a place for the partners and families of those who have married outside our faith. This vital conversation is also about kindness. Today’s world is assaulted by unprecedented change to the point that it might be properly termed acceleration. Challenges, opportunities, and dilemmas confront us unceasingly. It is in this milieu that the Conservative message needs to be heard and experienced. Rather than “Conservative” which has political connotations to many, we really are “Conserving Judaism”, a way of life that values the heart and the head. We are the people who keep our sources alive along with the insights of our contemporary world. As long as we conserve a love of Judaism and of Jews, our faith remains fresh and vigorous. A colleague honored at the convention for his 66 years of service, shared the secret to his rabbinate. He proclaimed that a life of mitzvot, of holidays, rituals, community and study made his life better. If we can feel the same way, as I know we do, than Conservative Judaism will continue to be a joyous source of meaning for us and our children.

Shalom Chaverim, We are fast approaching Shavuot and by the time you get this KOL it will have already passed. I will not be at services this Shavuot as we are traveling to New Jersey to celebrate our granddaughter’s graduation from Solomon Schechter High School in West Orange NJ. She will have just returned from spending her last semester in Israel. We are very proud and excited to be at the ceremonies, and to see her again. After Shavuot, the next holy day is Tisha B’Av. Saturday night, July 21, we will have evening services, including the chanting of Lamentations, “Eicha”, at 9:00 pm and Sunday morning services at 8:30 am. Mincha will be at 1:00 pm and no 5:00 pm service. Then it is the High Holy Days that will be in early September. We are already working on the Aliyah list and will send the postcards out by the end of June. If you haven’t had an Aliyah on either Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, please call me at 561-498-0102 and let me know, and we will gladly find you a spot. The problem with seeing me at services and telling me then is that I can’t remember if I don’t write it down, and I can’t write anything on Shabbat. You can also tell Melissa or Jannette in the office and they will get the info to me.

Just a word about our connection to Israel. Today I attended a Hadassah meeting that highlighted the 70th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel. A video collage was presented showing various events during the past 100+ years of Hadassah and Israel. We all had tears of joy and remembrance in our eyes and were determined to keep giving of ourselves and our money to support Israel. With that in mind, I want to emphasize that supporting Israel also means supporting your local Temple. Without vibrant communities in the USA, Israel could be lost. We are lucky to have a vibrant community in Temple Anshei Shalom, and even though our demographics are a little older than many other Temples, how many of them have the wonderful array of activities every day. Minyan morning and evening, Lifelong Learning every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer months, many shows, both professional and home grown. All this takes money, and retirement from your vocation does not mean you can retire from Judaism. Think of us when you have a friend or relative with a birthday, an anniversary, or simcha. These small donations add up and are much more meaningful than a Hallmark card. With that, I close with my usual,Shalom Chaverim

Our wonderful gift shop is opened Monday-Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm for your shopping enjoyment.

I want to thank Dr. Gladys Morse for a wonderful talk about her educational venture in Cherry Hill, NJ. We also want to thank Dr. Morse for drawing the name of the winning raffle. More interesting and fascinating programs are scheduled starting in the fall, including a talk in November by Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger, a son of a Nazi officer who went to Israel and converted to Judaism. In February, a film, “Bagels over Berlin”, extoling Jewish air force personnel and their participation in the raids over Germany during WWII. Some of the participants will be in attendance and will answer questions from the audience. This will be an affair to remember. Details will be available in the carousal as the time approaches. We had a record number of people attending the Lag B’Omer bar-b-que picnic produced in conjunction with the TAS Sisterhood. It was enjoyed by all. The food by Diamond Caterers was tasteful and plentiful. Kudos to our member, Les Schwartz, for his very entertaining musical presentation. This was the first of more annual events to be planned with the Sisterhood. The next event will be an outdoor bar-b-que in the Succah scheduled for September 27. Mark your calendars and watch the carousel for more information. Flyers with details about the forthcoming Caribbean cruise in December are available in the carousel. Spaces are filling rapidly so make your reservation quickly. This is a very enjoyable method of supporting the Men’s Club and the Temple. With the retirement of our long time treasurer, Jack Ozer, the Men’s Club is seeking a replacement. We extend an invitation to anyone with financial or accounting experience to contact me with the desire to assume this position by the end of the year. I can be reached at “[email protected]”. The last Board meeting this season prior to the summer hiatus is scheduled for June 5th. The 1st Board meeting in the fall is scheduled for October 2nd. The first breakfast next fall is scheduled for October 21st, at which time State Representative Emily Schlosberg, a member of Temple Anshei Shalom, will be talking about what is happening in Palm Beach County. As a reminder to all new male members, the dues to their 2018 membership in the Men’s Club is included in their membership to the Temple. We invite all to attend the monthly Board meetings and the monthly breakfasts to become familiar with our activities with the expectation that they will become permanent and active members. We also invite any member with a special interest or talent to prepare a presentation at one of our monthly breakfasts. Please contact me, Bob Rothman, to schedule a time. In closing, I want to thank all those, whose assistance and support during my first year in office has been invaluable and greatly appreciated, including Marshall Engel, Sheldon Singer, Mitchel Abramowitz, Burt Gerson, Morris Cohen and also Jannette Abejean and Melissa Meyersdorf in the office. Have a safe and relaxing summer.

Shalom! Sisterhood just completed its last meeting for the 2017-2018 season. Our Mother’s Day meeting was spectacular with the candle lighting ceremony and being entertained by Cantor Bill Wood. Three events are planned for the summer: The first one is our always popular trip to Miami, which is scheduled for June 19, 2018. Prices are $65 for members and $69 for non-members. The deadline for reservations is June 12th. Secondly, we will be travelling to the Fort Myers/Naples area on July 25-26, 2018. There’ll be sightseeing, an afternoon boat tour, dinner & show, “Annie”, shopping, Coconut Creek Casino etc. TAS member prices for this trip is $183 pp double occupancy and $221 pp single occupancy. Non-member prices are $188 pp and $226 pp. The deadline for this trip is July 10th. Looking for something to do in August? Join us on Thursday, August 16th, for a Sisterhood card/game party/luncheon. Remember, mah jongg and canasta aren’t the only games in town. Get a group together and play whatever you wish. Fun will be had. Don’t forget this is when you get those fabulous meatballs!! Prices are $20 for members and $22 for non-members. Sign-up deadline is Monday, August 13th. Watch the carousel for further details. A big thank you to the Sisterhood Board of Directors; Millie Grant, Sema Weinberg, Bobbi Rosenzweig, Elizabeth Stux, Ruth Kurtz, Roz Schor, Loraine Epstein, Ruth Morwitz, Linda Kaplan, Roz Glickman, Helene Mendelson, Janette Kanfer and Jane Wechsler for making 2016-2017 a very successful year. Thank you to everyone who helped with Sisterhood Shabbat, hospitality, checking-in members, leading us in song, and chuck-a-buck at the monthly meetings. Thanks also to those who have worked in the ticket office, helped at card parties and bingo and everyone who helped Sisterhood in any way. We couldn’t have done it without all of you!! I’m proud to say that Sisterhood donated $5,000 to Temple Anshei Shalom. Thank you to all who made this possible, whether it was by working hard, attending our events, or both. Have a wonderful summer and look for our forthcoming events beginning in the fall with our joint venture with the Men’s Club: A Night in the Sukkah on Thursday, September 27th . Watch for further details.

We all deserve to rest and relax for a bit before the High Holy Days begin and the New Year begins. By the time you receive this, the wonderful FUSION MACHINE BAND will have performed. I know that everyone who was there thoroughly enjoyed it. June 10th brings us ONE PLUS ONE. They have performed for us before and audiences love them. Don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes to the performance: (2:00 pm on June 10th. Tickets are available for $10 in the ticket office). Larry Eber and The LASTING IMPRESSION SINGERS present A SALUTE TO AMERICA! on July 3 at 2 pm. Larry and his group of professional singers will sing about how people came to the United States for freedom. Don’t miss this Great Show!!! I know that opera might not be for everyone, but I think that you will enjoy “LA JUIVE” or “THE JEWESS”. It highlights the anti-Semitism that exists in the world and has existed for many, many years. It was written by Jacques Halevy in 1835 and was performed throughout Europe until 1936. This is a movie of the opera that was performed in 2003 by the Vienna State Opera. It stars Neil Shicoff. The twists and turns of the love between a Jewish woman and her Christian boyfriend reveal the difficulty that many couples have faced. I will not reveal the ending — come to TAS on July 15th and find out for yourself. This show is 3 hours and begins at 1:00 pm and goes till 4:30 pm. We include an intermission and refreshments will be served. $10 per person. This is sung in French with English subtitles. We will be taking the month off to relax and recoup for our exciting new season.

Have a wonderful Summer!!

I Care ….You Care….We All Care It was Theodore Roosevelt who said,” Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” We are grateful to Jo Anne, our bookkeeper, for suggesting that a project be started to knit lap blankets for those who are recovering from an illness or infirmity. Under the direction of Fran Bernstein, our knitter par excellence, and her committee of enthusiastic mitzvah knitters, “We All Care” will be distributing blankets to our members who have come home from the hospital or rehab. Our knitters meet Monday morning at 9:30 in the library, come join the group! Thank you all for your magnificent handiwork. Each “We All Care” committee member is there because they want to make a difference. Caring and kindness is contagious ...let’s spread it around. Acquaint yourself with other TAS members, when you attend any of our Temple events, Shabbat services, or Lifelong Learning programs. A smile is always a favorable way to initiate an introduction. Give us the privilege to support you in time of need. Rabbi Adler, and the Temple are here to help you. Please contact the Temple office at: (561) 495-1300

Shabbat Mincha in the Chapel Happens once each week. But, it is more attendees That we truly always seek.

The response that we get Is ever oh, so weak,Is the interest in religion Becoming very bleak?

Attendance at the Service In the Sanctuary on ShabbatIs always pretty steady Even if it’s cool or hot.

So, what’s a few more minutes Included in your day,As you pass the Chapel, Just stop in and pray.

It’s just twenty minutes Starting half past noon,You will feel so much better And give your soul a boon.

Minyan in the Chapel Also happens every day,In the morning and the evening We gather there to pray.

MINCHA IN THE CHAPELby MItchel Abramowitz

So, come to the Chapel And be as an example,Especially those who Are leaders of our Temple.

Once each week we will Offer you a greeting.Come an hour earlier Before your scheduled meeting.

The friendliness that you get Will, your outlook soften. It surely will make you Want to come more often.

When one is saying Kaddish, We, at least need ten.So, if not now, Don’t be asking, When?

Saying Kaddish daily Eases someone’s griefSo, please attend a service — We will keep it brief.

Once each week is not too much To come to Temple at five,It will surely be a lift To those who are alive.

We wanted to let you know that we have re-located our annual “Elite” donor Kol Nidre board to outside the chapel, on the lobby side, on the door. Take a moment to go over and look at it. It is a listing of our Elite supporters in three categories:

Pillars Of Torah: $1800Benefactors: $1000Sponsors: $500

To those of you, whose names appear on this year’s board, we are hoping that you can see your way clear to not only make another “Elite” donation, but that you will even chose to move up a category. To those of you, whose names don’t appear, maybe it is time to join our “Elite” donors. You will be hearing and reading more about being an "Elite" donor, and the Kol Nidre campaign in the near future.

What Will Your Legacy Be? With a “will” there’s a way. In one way or another, your life is rooted in our Temple. You have, through the years, supported our Temple, but have you included Temple Anshei Shalom in your Will or Estate Plan? By leaving a Legacy, you will perpetuate the Jewish traditions you cherish. All of us, regardless of age or wealth, have the ability to leave a Legacy. Just think how many lives your gift will impact. Leaving a Legacy today assures a Jewish tomorrow. Please contact Irwin Schultz at 561-414-9535 so that he can show you how simple the process is.
