From Cantor azu

A few weeks ago I shared at services the story of a small town where every Shabbat the rabbi led the town on a walk prior to celebrating together. Shabbat in the town was a truly magical experience.

When the rabbi neared the end of his days, he asked the town leaders to gather at his bedside. When everyone was present, he said, “You must promise me that when I depart, you will continue the Shabbat tradition.”

Not wanting to disappoint a dying man, they immediately agreed. Soon thereafter the rabbi died. The next Friday, those who had been present at the rabbi’s bedside held a special meeting. They argued and agonized over how they would fill the

void left behind by the holy rabbi. Finally the town leaders agreed to honor their word.

As the sun dipped low, they followed the rabbi’s tradition of knocking on doors, wishing everyone Shabbat Shalom. Townsfolk came out of their homes, greeted each other, and began the stroll. Sensing the positive energy building up around them, the leaders began to feel more and more confident.

When they arrived at the gathering place, one leader whispered to another, “What do we do now?” Before he could finish, one of the women began to sing the song the rabbi started with each week. Slowly other voices began to join hers. When that song ended, there was a pause. Then another man started the second song. More voices joined with his. And so it went, one song after the next, until before they knew it, they had welcomed Shabbat and were on their way home.

The leaders who had been with the rabbi, stayed behind. One said, “You were right, it was not the rabbi. This is a holy place. We could not have done this anywhere else.”

Another shook his head, “I disagree. What makes our community holy are the people. That was the rabbi’s message. We could have gathered anywhere, and made it a holy place. It was all of us, contributing to the experience that made it holy. From those who started the Shabbat greeting, to the person who started the last song. Together we are holy.”

Temple Shalom, like that town from the story, is about more than one person – be it the rabbi, cantor or president. It is about more than our beautiful building. Temple Shalom is holy because of the people who are here.

Temple Shalom is holy because of the volunteers who tirelessly work each week in the kitchen to prepare the oneg, those who give their time in leadership, and those who invest of themselves in the well-being of our Family.

Temple Shalom is holy because of the staff in the office, and the teachers in our schools.

Temple Shalom is holy because together we make it so.

As we start this New Year of 5775, thank you for making this community holy, and being part of our sacred journey together.

L’shana tovah u’mtukah -- may it be a holy year full of blessing, laughter and love.

From rabbi miller

Those of you who come to services regularly on Shabbat know that the melodies for many of our prayers tend to change from week to week. One Friday night we might sing an upbeat V’shamru while other times we might sing a more soothing melody, hoping to bring a sense of calm into our day of rest. Though you may have noticed that over the last four years I have made a few small additions and changes to our High Holy Day music, most of the music remains more consistent from one year to the next.

The most practical reason for this repetition is the fact that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur come once a year. The unique liturgy and music associated with these holy days are like old friends; melodies that remind us of how much has happened and how much we’ve changed or stayed the same since the last time we heard them. Perhaps the most familiar of all the melodies we hear each High Holy Day season is that of Kol Nidrei, the introductory oath that we recite on the eve of Yom Kippur.

The text, which is not actually in Hebrew but in Aramaic, is more of a legal document than an actual prayer. It is a ritual in which we declare that all vows and oaths that we intend to make in the coming year are to be considered null and void. The practice of reciting Kol Nidrei three times has been in effect since at least the 11th century as documented by Simchah of Vitry, a disciple of Rashi: “The first time the hazzan must utter it very softy, like one who hesitates to enter the palace of the king to ask a gift of Him whom he fears to approach; the second time he may speak somewhat louder; and the third time more loudly still, as one who is accustomed to dwell at court and to approach his Sovereign as a friend.”

Here at Temple Shalom, the soft Kol Nidrei will once again be played on Viola and Organ by our talented congregant, Jessie Goebel, allowing us to imagine the text and collect our thoughts as we prepare to enter the majesty of this Day of Atonement. A spoken and somewhat louder text follows, allowing us to focus on the meaning of our oath. Our final rendition involves the robust sounds of myself and our incredible choir, joined by the sweet sounds of the Viola bringing our congregation together so that we can approach the day as a community of friends.

The beloved melody is steeped even further in Jewish history. In the fourteenth century, the Maharil (Moreinu HaRav Yaakov haLevi) describes prolonging the melody of Kol Nidrei so that latecomers can be sure to hear it. Later, the Talmudist Mordechai Jaffe alludes to a “fixed tune” for Kol Nidrei after he attempted to fix some errors in the text. Cantors were “unable to incorporate changes in the course of their chanting because they are too attracted to the old melody that fits the familiar text,” he writes. Although we cannot be certain that the melody he heard was the same one we sing today, it is highly probable that the haunting pairing between the music and text of Kol Nidrei is what Jaffe referred to in the sixteenth century. This makes it one of the oldest melodies in the Ashkenazi tradition.

Even in an age where contemporary musical styles have become commonplace in the synagogue, Kol Nidrei remains close to its historic roots. The melody can be heard in synagogues across all denominations, bringing together not only generations of our people but also the increasingly diverse Jewish community of today. The exception to this rule is that many Sephardic communities have their own tradition for Kol Nidrei but that’s a story for another day.

As the familiar strains of Kol Nidrei signal the beginning of our Day of Atonement, I encourage you to think about ways in which you can make 5775 a year of finding new ways to connect as a community. May the various interpretations of this age old melody give you an opportunity to reflect, to be vulnerable, and to raise your voices in joyful song. G’mar Chatimah Tovah!

Our Temple Shalom Religious School teachers are teaching to make a difference. Each of the twenty- eight adults and thirty 8-12th grade Madrichim students who comprise our staff make their dedication and passion for Judaism clear from the moment they step into the

classroom on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. We are a diverse group of people who share a common goal: a love for our value-based religion and the desire to impart those values on our children, who are our future.

Our teachers are committed to giving their time and effort every week because they love working with children. It takes a very special person who has the patience and understanding of the many learning styles and needs of their students to be a teacher. We certainly know that the teaching profession is one of true dedication and commitment and since our teaching days require time on the weekends and in the afternoons and evenings, we owe our teachers a tremendous sense of gratitude and appreciation for all that they do. On a personal note, I am proud and lucky to work with all of these fine adults and teens. They share my passion for Judaism and my love of children. How lucky am I to be able to work with them each week?

It is my pleasure to announce our Religious School teachers to you….

“Mary Mary Quite ContraryHow Does Your Garden Grow?”Temple Shalom Preschool is proud to announce yet another expansion to its already growing curriculum. We have been busy preparing an

outdoor fruit and vegetable garden. This new initiative will allow our budding students the opportunity to engage in planting, observing, and partaking in the fruits of their labor. The garden’s foundation has been built, the soil prepared, and now the children are busy planting the seeds.

Growth is what it’s all about at TSP. This year’s program is designed to

cultivate not only the minds of our little ones, but to teach them both environmental awareness and the wonder of nature. Our garden is the latest addition to our already progressive academic program. The extra-curriculum subjects addressed in our science and technology labs continue to develop. Storyland, our arts and literature center, flourishes and expands its program annually. TSP’s arts and music departments, staffed by our talented Miss Jane and Miss Linda, tap the capabilities of our young artists.

The seeds are now planted and we are anxious to nurture not only our ground-breaking garden, but the minds of our sprouting little professors.

The leaves are falling and the colors are becoming beautiful - so it is time for all of us who have been away for the summer to return to Naples, full of energy to make this season of 2014-2015 a wonderful season. There will be a new directory, a bible for all of us to know the whereabouts of our friends.

Sisterhood has been busy over the summer planning a terrific season for all ages that we hope will delight, entertain and teach all of us from morning, through lunch and into evening. Sisterhood has already started to entertain almost two dozen of us at a fabulous French movie that was held at Silverspot Theatre in Mercato on Tuesday, September 9. Everyone enjoyed the snacks, the wine, the movie and of course, being together and sharing tales of the busy summer. The Sisterhood was happy to be a part of this terrific evening. Thank you, Tracy, for planning and running this very successful night.

On September 20, we will have a reception after the Selichot service and fabulous film. Please join us. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Don’t forget to stop by the Sisterhood table after the Yizkor/Neilah service on October 4 in the lobby. We look forward to wishing one and all a very happy new year!

On Tuesday, October 14 at 11:30AM, we are happy to present lunch

at Temple Shalom, our first luncheon of the season. Corporal Ray Erickson from the Naples Police Dept. will speak to us about how to protect ourselves and tell us things that we never thought we would need to know. A question and answer period will follow. There will be a sumptuous lunch with homemade desserts. The prices are; $22 for Temple members, $25 for non-members and $50 for sponsors. Please send you reservations to Sandy Stone at [email protected] or 239-597-1553. Checks made out to Temple Shalom Sisterhood can be mailed to the Temple, 4630 Pine Ridge Rd. Naples, FL 34119.

The Sisterhood Book Bag begins on a different day for the first meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, October 16 at 1:30PM. Please see page eight of The Voice for more information. This is a fun group and we are always looking for more members.

Looking ahead to November, watch your emails because we will be presenting a mystery luncheon, not held at Temple. Our speaker at the November meeting is someone who will tell us what to look forward to this coming season.

Don’t forget to bring your pop tabs from your cans. The Ronald Macdonald House will be grateful that you do!

A happy and healthy new year to the entire Temple Shalom Congregation!

Don’t forget to save and turn in the pop tops from your aluminum cans!!

Why?Ronald McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire alumi-num cans because it’s more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier. The program is an easy way for people of all ages to support RMHC and know that they are making a difference for families and children.

Place your tabs in a baggie and drop them off in the Temple office.

Thanks for helping to make a difference!

An exciting opportunity!!Dedicate a set of the new

High Holy Day Prayer Books

debuting in 2015

With your contribution of $108, you have the opportunity to memorialize or honor a loved one with a name plate

in each of the two books in the set.

What inspires a life well lived? It’s all the special moments. Like waking up in your spacious new

residence. Being greeted by name, with a warm smile. A great meal

in stylish surroundings with good friends. An invigorating workout

or swim in the pool. And the assurance that tomorrow’s care needs

can be managed for you, right here at home. This is retirement

living, enriched and unencumbered – tailored to you.

This is life, your life, at The Carlisle Naples.
