over to the sanctuary at 7:30 for the program. At the time

of this writing, we have two brass players and possibly a

third, who will be joining Todd and other organists from

our chapter in presenting music for organ and brass. We

are also looking forward to hearing the rebuilt Schantz

with the new added Walker digital stops as well as music

that we can use in worship and weddings.

On October 13th I and two other members of our chapter

attended the Grand Strand Chapter's workshop in Myrtle

Beach with clinician Richard Van Auken. It was a stimu-

lating program and we all came away with a collection of

complimentary hymn harmonizations. We also enjoyed

networking with another chapter and hearing from them

about their plans for hosting the upcoming Regional

Convention next June in Myrtle Beach. We look forward

to sharing what we learned with everyone in person at

the meeting on November 12th.

NOVEMBER PROGRAM

MUSIC FOR ORGAN AND BRASS

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12

Director of Music Todd Monsell will host the chapter in a program of music for brass and organ. Trum-

peter Todd Smith and trombonist Stephen Spaulding will be on hand to play. Dinner at 6:30 ($15) will

be catered by Dish & Design. BYOB for those who want a little wine. At 7:30 we will adjourn to the or-

gan gallery to hear the newly rebuilt organ (Schantz 1965/Schlueter 2017) with additional Walker digital

stops.

An email will be going out reminding you to reserve a place for dinner. Be advised that if you reserve a

spot and don’t show up, you will be invoiced. When you reserve, the chapter is obliged to pay for the

reservation whether you’re there or not.

CHANGES TO THE ST. LUKE’S SERIES Beginning in February 2019, the St. Luke's Series will undergo a change for the spring months. The

number of concerts will be reduced to four, and the day will shift to the first Wednesday of the month.

At the end of the spring season, the series will be revisited to see if the change has had an effect.

This is an experiment endorsed by the chapter board, by Tom Bailey, coordinator for the series, and by

Elizabeth Brown, the chapel office administrator. There are reasons for the change.

Attendance during the 2016-17 season was the lowest it has ever been, some performances attracting

only six or seven in the audience. Such audiences are disheartening enough for local performers. When

an organist journeys over from Beaufort to play for seven people, it’s just embarrassing. Under Eliza-

beth Brown’s guidance in the chapel office, things improved for 2017-18. Elizabeth worked hard to get

word out to the MUSC community about the concerts, and audiences reached upwards of 15-20 for sev-

eral of the performances. Now, the 2018-19 season is starting off with meager audiences once again.

The question is, why?

The MUSC area has changed since the series began back in the 1990s. There are more buildings, more

people working in them, lots more congestion. People in general seem to be busier. Parking is a bear.

Wednesdays make sense since the chapel is now closed on Mondays, preventing performers from com-

ing in the day prior to practice. Perhaps having fewer performances will generate healthier audiences.

We will assess things at the end of the season next spring to see how it all went. The board is certainly

open to other ideas, and the membership is encouraged — urged, even — to share them.

FURMAN UNIVERSITY CHURCH MUSIC CONFERENCE Furman University will host its 2019 Church Music Conference on campus

Thursday and Friday, Jan. 24 and 25, 2019. The featured clinician for the event

is Stephen Cleobury, acclaimed director of music at King’s College, Cam-

bridge, England.

The conference is open to the public. Registration for the two-day event is

$75 prior to Jan. 6, and $95 after that date as space remains. Conference at-

tendees who wish to sing in the combined choir for Friday evening’s Evensong

service, on a space available basis, must register by Nov. 15. Student registra-

tion is $50.

The conference, founded in 1971, is made possible through a grant from the

Thomson Foundation. Drawing church musicians from all over the Southeast,

the conference features nationally known clinicians who present lectures and

conduct workshops relating to the practice of church music.

One of the foremost church musicians of our time and faculty member at

King’s College since 1982, Cleobury will conduct open rehearsals of Furman’s outstanding choral en-

sembles, the Furman Singers and Furman Chamber Choir, and will also lead a demonstration rehearsal

with the youth choirs of Greenville’s Chicora Voices.

Cleobury will also speak about King’s College musical traditions, including the world-famous Festi-

val of Nine Lessons and Carols, and will conduct the Furman Singers, conference attendees, and the Par-

ish Choir of Christ Church (Episcopal), Greenville in a concluding Choral Evensong. This service will

include the premiere performance of Cleobury’s anthem, “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies,” com-

missioned for the 2019 Church Music Conference.

BEAUFORT, SC: CARTERET STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Carteret Street United Methodist Church is seeking a part-time organist who

will provide music in a worshipful spirit on Sunday morning and other occa-

sions.

▪ One service: 10:30AM (Year-Round), and weekly Adult Choir Rehearsals

(Wed. Sept.-May), and Monthly on Sunday evenings (June-August).

2013 and includes 36 speaking stops with standard couplers. Console accessories include a combination

action with 64 memory levels, swell and crescendo expression shoes, sforzando, transposer, and rec-

ord/playback system. The organ is prepared for MIDI voices. A grand piano is also present in the sanctuary.

EDISTO ISLAND, SC: TRINITY CHURCH (ACNA) Trinity is a vibrant and growing Anglican Church on Edisto Island, a little less than

an hour south of Charleston. Our sanctuary is historically registered and the current

church was built in 1881. The musical instruments in the sanctuary include an Allen

(MDS-6) digital 3-manual organ and an exceptional Yamaha Clavinova piano. The

duties include:

▪ Leading an enthusiastic Adult Choir occasionally accompanied by our Handbell

Choir in a vibrant 8 a.m. traditional service featuring hymns and classical music.

▪ Leading our Church Band from the piano at the 10:30 a.m. Contemporary Ser-

MOUNT PLEASANT: ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH (ELCA)

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant needs an organist/choir director.

They will consider one person for the position, and are willing to spit it between

two people. The church is a small one with one adult choir that meets on Wednes-

day nights (except during June and July). It has a two-manual pipe organ in the

back balcony and a grand piano in the front of the sanctuary. There is also a set of

As the winner of the Grand Prix d’Interprétation at the 24th Concours International d’Orgue de Char-

tres, Dexter Kennedy has established himself internationally as “one of the greatest organists of our

times” (Iceland Monitor). Praised for his “prodigious technique and grand style musicality” in The

American Organist, he currently serves on the music faculty of the College of Wooster (Ohio) as Instruc-

tor of Organ and Harpsichord. During the Fall 2017 semester, Kennedy served as Visiting Assistant

Professor of Organ at Oberlin College Conservatory.

CITADEL ORGAN CRAWL & POSTLUDE PROGRAM

Nancy Lefter will host the chapter. Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders has already installed the Trompette

Militaire (en chamade) in the rear of the chapel (2017). Renovations have begun on the Great, Choir,

and Pedal divisions which will fill the North Chamber. Most of the original 1937 Reuter pipework is to

be reused, placed on new wind chests. To be completed late 2018. Future phases include the relocated

Swell division, and new Solo division which will both be located in the South Chamber, along with a few

more Pedal stops. Bring your favorite 3-minute postlude to see what the organ can do.

We cruised Charleston Harbor in 2017, wining and dining and dancing on the bounding main. We’ll do

it again in 2019. Details will follow closer to the date.
