The Spark Remark

Over the past 5 years, Willoughby-Eastlake students have partnered with the Cleveland

Police Department, District 2 officers to give stockings filled with goodies to children in

need in Cleveland. We have been able to donate 50 - 200 filled stockings each year!

This year, School of Innovation students will have the opportunity to fill a stocking (or two)

using a list of suggested items. Of course, this is an optional activity, but if every student

filled at least 1 stocking we would be able to donate 225 stockings...the most donated in one

year ever! It’s also okay if family members want to help out too!

All of our stockings have been adopted! Remember to send the filled stocking back in to

school no later than December 1st. Thank you for helping us bring joy to children in need!

In social studies students have been working

in groups to create a timeline of all of our re-

search for our capstone project. They have

also been researching the history of inven-

tions and their impact on the community as

well as talking about using fractions to create

a timeline for capstone. In math students are

using the design process to design a bracelet

and review fraction concepts at the same

time. Student also had to follow certain con-

straints with fractions to design a bracelet

Some conversation prompts for you to ask your

child:

“What invention or inventor are you re-

searching?”

“What machine did you use in the FAB

LAB to cut out your stickers?

“Who are your group members for your

timeline and what does each letter in the

word GROUP stand for when working to-

gether? “

On Thursday Dr. Steven Adkins and Mr.

George Brown from the Willoughby Rotary

Club stopped by to hand our brand new dic-

tionaries to every 3rd grade at the School of

Innovation! They also taught us some of

what the thousands of Rotary clubs around

the world do in the name of service to peo-

ple. Thank you both for giving our students

the gift of knowledge!

This week fourth graders designed a healthy cafeteria menu. They also be-gan new chapters in math and were re-shuffled based on their needs. So your child MAY have a new math teacher for the time being. As we discussed at con-ferences, we redesigned the math con-tract to make it more user friendly for the kids. Therefore, it is on paper this time and will be completed at school.

The students had fun designing maps of Ohio showing where the Native Americans settled. Biography notes are due Wednes-day of next week. Look in your child’s folder this weekend for a rubric. We asked students to look over the rubric to deter-mine if any more work was needed for their notes. The video information will be shared with the kids next week.

Some conversation prompts for you to

ask your child:

“Where is your biography rubric and notes?”

“What meals did you suggest for the cafeteria menu?”

“How can you fit more physical fitness into the day at SOI? What were your suggestions?”

5th grade Weekly Update

The students presented their Civic Issue pro-jects this week. Everyone did a great job! The students also started brainstorming for their next design challenge involving the Earth’s movement. With a partner, the stu-dents will have to make a model to demon-strate how the Earth’s movement creates pat-terns. Each group will present to their teacher individually. In ELA, the students continue to read their novels and are working on their Cornell notes for their Biography .

Remember the Biography Tea is Tuesday, De-cember 8th. Last, the students are continuing to work on their Google Slides for Cap-stone. Their Capstone Slides are due Friday, December 4th. Fifth grade students learned about how risk is analyzed by playing Progres-sive Parkway with some staff members of Pro-gressive! Future 6th grade teachers Mr. Wernet, Mrs. Zampini and Mr. Bonick were at SOI on Tues-day visiting! They are excited about 16-17!

Next week we will be writing our music based on can-dy. Bring in some small pieces of candy to share if you have not done so already (all music students, except band mem-bers). Ideal kinds include bags of Candy Corn, Skittles, M & M’s, Hershey Kisses or other small kinds of candies.

The 4th graders started a one month fitness challenge on 11/19/15 and ending on 12/20/15 where they will attempt to accumulate the steps as a class to walk around the United States ( 10,420 miles). The students are using the www.peclogit.com website to log all their progress and will be taken on a tour of the United States going threw all the States capi-tols. Have your child show you the virtual USA map on the PECLOGIT site and show you the progress our our 4th grade has made over the past 2 days. Each student is responsible for their share of the work and we will be able to achieve this challenge if they work as a team. Please remind your child to log onto the PE classroom site daily and log their progress and reset their pedometers.

All classes have designed a project using Corel Draw. Third graders are finished cut-ting their project on the laser. Fifth graders are cutting and assembling their project this week and next. Fourth grad-ers will be cutting their pro-ject on the laser when we re-turn from Thanksgiving Break. Ask your student what robust means in terms of design.

Progressive STEM math outreach

Recently our friends from Progressive Insurance visited the SOI 5th grade classes to discuss insurance, problem-solving skills, and real world situations involving math. Fifth grade students learned about how risk is analyzed by playing Progres-sive Parkway with some staff members of Progressive. Ask your fifth grader “What is the difference in terms of insurance rates and risks if you live in an urban area or a rural area?” Students then worked in collaborative groups to solve problems using a board game. The students loved the game and the Progressive Team! Thanks for the visit!!
