How organised is your wardrobe? I’m ashamed to say, particularly given the business I’m in, that mine is bursting at the seams, a bit dusty and in need of a good sort out. We all live our lives at such a fast pace that it’s hard to keep on top of these jobs. Providing I can push everything in and close the door I try to not think about it. But it can get me down, especially when I come to get ready and try to decide what to wear every morning.

I love my clothes and can be prone to hoarding pieces that hold happy memories, were so expensive it still hurts, or are so special that I can’t bring myself to part with them. I’m also guilty of hanging onto the odd piece I’ve never worn as well as much-loved items that don’t fit now but might do one day!

But I do always reorganise my wardrobe at the start of every new season. Swapping over certain pieces to make room for more weather-appropriate clothes is a must. This also gives me chance to evaluate what I have, what no longer serves me, and what I need to invest in for the new season.

C learing and re-organising a wardrobe can be tiring,

so it’s usually best to allocate several 1-3 hour stints. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. If you have a friend or family member who’s willing to help that can make a huge difference. In fact, it can even make the process fun and enjoyable. My goddaughter is a brilliant help and it’s lovely to spend time with her on a joint mission. She also gets first dibs on the clothes from the clear out; I love seeing her and other friends breathing

new life into pieces I have also loved. Being in the right frame of mind also means being prepared to be a bit ruthless and willing to part with things. I’ve had a few minor regrets - a classic LBD from Donna Karan Mainline springs to mind - but these are far outweighed by the feel-good factor you’ll experience when you finish. It’s like a weight has been lifted; suddenly, your wardrobe feels manageable again. Your state of mind will improve when each morning becomes far more relaxed and easier.

work with and visualise how you want your area to look. Pinterest and Instagram are great places to gain some inspiration. Influencers like the ‘Style Sisters’ Gemma and Charlotte have been sweeping the internet with their transformational skills and dramatic wardrobe makeovers. However, this trend in decluttering and reorganising is picking up more traction - and not only for its visual effects, but for its mental benefits too. Vicky Silverthorn (youneed-avicky.com), a professional organiser who’s

worked with many celebrities, says: ‘There’s an enormous connection between having an orderly home and letting go of stress’. To further this, a study published last year in the current journal Psychology found that clutter increased levels of cortisol - the stress hormone. Meanwhile, research by Harvard University found that those with tidy workspaces were more productive. So, the benefits of revamping your wardrobe far exceed simply having a fabulously colour-coordinated space: it’s about carefully curating your own life and personal style.

Wth a best-selling book, The Life-Changing

Magic of Tidying Up, and a new hit series on Netflix, it feels like the whole world is practicing Marie Kondo’s method of decluttering and folding their clothes upright.

Her philosophy is based on keeping possessions that speak to the heart and discarding items that no longer spark joy - thanking them for their service and then letting them go. People around the world have been drawn to this concept, not only for its effectiveness but also because it places great importance on being mindful and introspective.

Marie’s method is about choosing to keep objects that spark inner joy. Here’s how: pick up each item one at a time. Ask yourself if it sparks joy – you should feel a little thrill, as if the cells in your body are slowly rising. If it does, keep it; if it doesn’t, let it go with gratitude! Marie highlights the importance of giving everything a home. She says: “Clutter is caused by a failure to put things back where they belong. The trick is to designate a place for each thing – a home for every single one of your items.” But remember: before you even start thinking about storage, it’s imperative that you finish discarding first!

I takeout the pieces I can immediately decide what to do with,

putting them into piles on the bed.

The next step is emptying everything out that’s left in the

wardrobe and giving the closet a good clean. First, with the

vacuum cleaner and then a wipe down with a fresh-smelling

disinfectant solution.

I separate items into different categories: Donate, Gift a Friend,

Sell, Repair or Dry Cleaning. This process may take a few cuts

as I go back and review what’s still hanging and take out

more. Anything that doesn’t fit probably needs to go, or I apply

the rule of, ‘have I worn it in the last 18months?’ to decide if

something is worth keeping.

I then bag everything up that’s going and take it out of the

room, ready for its onward journey. At this stage, I’m starting to

feel better and decluttered.

Now there is space, it’s time to sort out your winter

wardrobe from your summer. I move the current season into the wardrobes and drawers that are most close to hand and put out-of-season items into more remote wardrobe spaces and storage.

This is where storage boxes and vacuum bags come into play. It’s worth noting that vacuum bags for storage are great space savers, but it’s not always easy to find things in them. I’ve also heard warnings that they can damage fabric by breaking fibres in the thread, plus they create a lot of creases.

If you’re tight for hanging space, consider using slim velvet touch non-slip hangers. These are excellent space savers and OK for tops, however you should still use large moulded hangers for coats and other items that need to keep a good shape. We have plenty of these hangers at Young Ideas that we can give you. You could also suggest that your other half uses the slim hangers for his shirts. He then needs less space, and you might be able to acquire an extra wardrobe if you are sharing! I failed on that one: mine uses the hangers but I couldn’t negotiate the extra space!

Tip: don’t forget to pack away your seasonal shoes or boots. People often forget to put shoes

away and they take up so much room in your wardrobe!

I try to split my wardrobe into everyday workwear,

weekend relaxed wear, going out pieces and then special eveningwear. Whatever your lifestyle, you can organise your wardrobe to suit.

The next step, by general consensus in the fashion world, is to organise your clothes by category: tops, shirts/blouses, dresses, coats etc. Within a category, it can be helpful to grade each item by colour. This is all super organisation. It’s good to set

up, but in day-to-day life it can be challenging to maintain this order. This is where I find a freestanding holding rail really useful for every day. In the week I put things onto this rail and then spend 30 minutes or so sorting it all out on a Sunday, putting everything back in order. If you can do this, it’s worth trying to keep on top of it all; it does ultimately save time, money and peace of mind. You know what you’ve got, where to find it and you will have a decluttered space and mind.

Trousers are best hung on clip hangers. If you fold them together

and hang them by the hem it really helps to drop out creases

and saves on ironing and steaming.

I tend to fold jeans over and hang them by type (skinny, crop,

white, black etc) on sturdy wooden hangers. Rolling is also a

good option or folding in half in a long drawer, depending on

your storage space.

jeansThe best way to store knitwear is by folding it into drawers or storage boxes. Ideally, store knits after cleaning and also pop in moth repellent. Breathable zip lock bags with moth repellent added in will give extra protection. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight but try to avoid storing bags and boxes under the bed, as anywhere dark and dusty is more prone to moths. Folding tissue between items is also good to prevent creasing and gives protection.

Bags are best kept in their original dust bags and stuffed

with tissue or an old towel to hold their shape and prevent

irreparable creasing. It helps if you can store bags along a shelf

or the bottom of your wardrobe; it’s not good to hang them as

this can damage the strap.

For underwear and small items, Ikea makes a great selection of

little folding fabric SKUBB boxes, which are great for organising

your drawers and shelves.

footwearFor my everyday footwear I use racks or pigeon holes. I try to

keep special pairs in their original boxes with descriptions on the

outer side, so I know what’s inside. Shoe trees and boot stays are

good practice, but I often just use scrunched up tissue paper to

help keep my shoes in shape. You can keep footwear fresh too

with shoe mists and trainer sprays.

My go-to wardrobe workhorse and all-time favourite essential is a pair of slimming black trousers. I have them in every cut you can think of. A pop colour pair also makes a good

Many of the larger supermarkets in the UK have textile recycling banks (including the Sainsburys in Ashbourne).

You could always drop your clothes off with a local charity shop or use the push bags through your letterbox.
