The Wave Volume 17, Issue 3 October 5, 2018 Mrs. Ackley’s Message . . . SCHOOL SAFETY & SECURITY As you know, keeping our students safe is a top priority. I appreciate parents calling me directly when they have an issue or concern. I also welcome feedback from parents when something just does not seem right. For example, I encourage you to let the office know if you see a suspicious vehicle or person in the parking lot. Trust your gut instincts and communicate if you feel compelled. I value our strong relationship between school & community in North Lake and it is in everyone’s best interest to help in maintaining a safe, secure setting for our happy children. Further, I want to clari- fy that when you see police vehicles in our parking lot, do not assume the worst. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s De- partment has a charge to increase deputy presence in the schools. Deputy Dan Adrian is our school liaison officer and walks through our building multiple times a week. I am very comfortable with the police presence in North Lake School and am reassured that the emergency responders are well- versed in our school layout and know the facility map. As always, I am happy to discuss school safety & security with you and plan to address this topic in most WAVE articles. ATTENDANCE & AFTER SCHOOL AGENDAS I cannot stress enough the importance of good school at- tendance and timely arrivals. Although Arrowhead may have different consequences for absenteeism than North Lake School, I want to remind everyone that good habits start early and are more easily maintained when they begin in grade school. I have noticed a steady rise in absent/late students over the past few years and hope we can work together to have students in seats when school is in session. I am willing to discuss your individual situation and problem solve with your family if needed. Also, we seem to be experi- encing confusion in the office at the end of the school day. Some students are unsure where to go at 2:30 pm, and teachers are not always able to check voicemail and/or email at the end of the day. I understand that plans can change and encourage parents to communicate after school plans with the office. We are here to help and ensure your child follows your after school plan. SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION WEEK October 7-13 is Wisconsin School Board Week and I want to recognize our North Lake School Board and thank them for their service to our school community. Sue Schultz (Presi- dent), Deb Schaber (Vice-President), Bob Gatchel (Treas- urer), Marty Iverson (Clerk), and John Marchek (Member). I am extremely grateful to have such an experienced school board who puts students first and makes financially-sound decisions. I encourage parents to attend a meeting and have even heard that it makes for a fun date night! ACCOMPLISHMENTS OUTSIDE OF NLS Ty Javier and Nikolai Savitskij participated in the Milwau- kee Maker Faire last weekend. According to Maker Faire’s website, Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hob- bies, experiments, projects. It is called the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth! Ty Builds is featured on the website at https://milwaukee.makerfaire.com. Fellow North Laker & friend, Connor, came to see his friends in action. Ty described their project to me: “We made a pressurized cannon that kids could demo. Kids shot down cups and most had a good time. Some were scared. One of the best parts was before we started we got to drive through the State Fair Park grounds to get there.” Congrats to these young engineers with entrepreneurial spirit! Please submit the cool things that your kids are accomplishing outside of NLS and I will happy to include your submission in future WAVE articles. CAMEL YOU BELIEVE IT?! Thank you, Travis & family, for sharing Humphrey on Tuesday afternoon with us. We are so blessed by our rural setting and were thrilled to have a unique pet visit! We will all have good luck for one year compliments of Humphrey. Express Yourself Express Yourself Express Yourself Express Yourself

Counseling Corner: Hello North Lake families! It seems that I can’t teach a lesson lately without the topic of video games, and especially Fortnite, coming up. Whether they are bringing it up in Health as we talk about healthy habits, in Guidance as we talk about feelings, or during conversations between each other about their “skins and dances”, it is definitely consuming the thoughts of many of our students. I wanted to share some great resources for you that might help if you, as many parents I am talking to, are suffering from “Fortnite Frustration”! Screenagers has some Tech Talk Circle plans that you can use to discuss topics with your family, friends, or other parents who want to open up conversation around the topic of technology. Click here (https://goo.gl/CD4RnS) for a link to the Circle focused on Video Games. If you are interested in the other resources they have available, let me know and I can share them with you. I’ve shared this one (https://goo.gl/iC2Kro) before, but it’s a good time to revisit a family screen time contract, so here you go! As always, please let me know if there are any ways that I can support your child! Take care-
