Dear Residents,

I was delighted to hear that a group of people who have called themselves the Wroxall Wombles (Mary Read, Kate and Lauren Thompson) have started litter picking in the village. If anyone would like to join them please let me know and I will put you in touch. The extension plans for the school were before Councillors in June. This expansion is badly needed now there are 2 extra year groups at the school. How different a situation we are in now than when the school was threatened with closure just a few years ago. It continues to be a thriving school and I was pleased to see the school contributing to last month’s Way Magazine. Rodney Downer and myself met with Island Roads to explore the possibility of upgrading the zebra crossing to a pelican crossing, which would go some way to not only helping people young and old to cross the road, but would also help to slow the traffic down. At the present time we do not meet the criteria and the cost would be astronomical. Look out later in the month for the new Wroxall Parish Council website. www.wroxallparishcouncil.org. If anyone has any old Wroxall pictures that could be added please can you let me know. Adrian Gallop, Chairman, Wroxall Parish Council

LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOUNDARY COMMISSION RESULT

Despite a few of the residents of Wroxall making submissions

requesting the LGBC to re-consider their plan to link Wroxall with Lowtherville and Bonchurch, and in the face of the Commission’s own guidelines, our well-argued views have been ignored. Once again, we are treated as Cinderella. Only time will tell how this affects us all in our small but vibrant village. History of our Houses

In and around Wroxall

Middleton House as it is today, once fondly known locally as The Gas

House

October 1987 Demolition of gas workshops and extension to Middleton House.

November 1981 We purchased the property from Mrs. Marie, it had been empty for about

two years.

February 1972 Mr. Marie granted ‘The Council for the Administration of the Isle of

Wight’, a portion of land abutting St John’s Road for the widening of

the road and creation of a pavement.

November 1967 Mr. Marie leased land to the Southern Electricity Board for the sub-

station on Grove Road.

December 1958 The Southern Gas Board assigned the lease to Mr L. Marie.

April 1926 Under lease was created between Clarice Aitken and The Shanklin

Gas Company for ‘…a piece of meadow land at Wroxall…’

On this land was erected a single-story building for the gas company.

Later, after several changes of use, including a cafe and a garage, it

was lived in as a bungalow ‘Alpha’. Subsequent to that it was used

as a hairdresser and is now Alpha Cottages 1 & 2.

June 1924 An indenture was made between William Downer (painter), Albert

Stainer (watchmaker), Oliver Kingswell (‘…the said Highway Foreman

of the trustees of the society known as the Isle of Wight District no.

45 of the Independent Order of Rechabites Friendly Society), Frank

Young, Isle Dealer (the Vendor) and The Shanklin Gas Company (the

Purchasers). Middleton House was built to accommodate the

Manager, provide an office/shop for gas appliances and workshops

were built for repairs.

June 1906 Miss Malvina Mary Bell of Denmark Hill, Surrey, leased ‘…a piece of

land and premises…’ to Mr. A.C. Ansell, a pork butcher from Ventnor.

Between July 1879 and February 1893 the ownership of the land gets complicated with

numerous people seeming to have some kind of lease, expired, small amounts of rent

changing hands and very strict covenants including not to use the premises ‘…for any

noisome or offensive trade or business or commit or suffer any nuisance or annoyance

whatsoever whereby the neighbourhood would or might be rendered unhealthy or less

desirable for habitation…

Rew Valley WI meet in Wroxall Methodist Church Hall on the second Wednesday of each month at 2 o'clock. Thanks to all of you who came along to our recent coffee morning which was in aid of Daisy Chains, an Island based children's charity helping children and babies with long term health needs and life limiting conditions. We raised £312 for this worthy cause.

This month we welcomed Sally Ashe who gave us an interesting talk on Action on Fraud. Our programme of events is very varied - during May Members got together for two afternoons to learn how to make items in Paper Mache, as well as our lunch club which is going from strength to strength plus, of course, our normal talks. If you would like to come along to one of our meetings you will be made very welcome. Ladies can attend two meetings before joining. This gives you a chance to decide whether or not it is for you. For more information please contact Gill on 854470 or Nette on 854201

40 YEARS WROXALL BADMINTON CLUB JUNE 2019, A SHORT HISTORY

Wroxall Badminton Club celebrated 40 years in June when a group of over 70 people attended a party held at Wroxall Community Centre. The evening was a great success when friends and families and other clubs attended the event. There was a Quiz, Disco and Buffet and a display of photographs of past events over the last few years. The raffle raised money for The British Heart Foundation and a local charity. When the club started, the numbers were limited to 50, as when the first meeting was held about a hundred people turned up! The first team started playing league in the 1979/80 season in Division 7. Two years later there were 2 teams in Divisions 7 and 8. At the end of 1987/88 the B team won Division 6. In the 1990’s the 2 teams played in Division 3 and 5 and increased to 3 teams between 1990/1993 in Divisions 2, 4 and 5. The following year Wroxall were runners up in The Mallett Cup Tournament and in 1995 were runners up in The Peggy Doherty Tournament. In 1995 and 1997/98 the B team won Division 4. Wroxall Badminton Club won It’s a Knockout at Niton 2 years running in 1993 and 1994. From those early days in 1979 when Wroxall only played on a Tuesday morning, we now have two teams in the league in Division 2 and 3. When the club was thriving, and there were plenty of members they held BBQ’s, Treasure Hunts and Bowling Nights. The Club took part in Wroxall Carnival with the younger members of the family joining in and there were Fancy Dress Tournaments at Christmas. During the St John’s Church Flower Festival, they contributed funds for a display. Louise Underwood started the Juniors which she ran for many years and encouraged them by taking them to Junior Tournaments and coaching them. Some of these young people are now playing league as adults. Meg Rigby runs the Senior Badminton Club which is still held on a Tuesday morning and is so popular that Wroxall has had to limit new members coming in. During the evening there was a presentation of shields for this seasons winners and thanks were given to the Chairman Clayton Simpson and the committee members for keeping the club alive. The newest members were welcomed, and it was hoped they will play for Wroxall next season.

WROXALL PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

The other morning, I was alarmed to see what appeared to be a detachment of armed women soldiers returning from active service. On making further enquiries, I discovered that they had been ‘armed’ by our IW Councillor, Rodney Downer! Not with weapons of war, however, but a squad of volunteer litter-pickers with the appropriate weapons for waging war on litter in the village. When the Parish Council learned that Rodney had paid for these litter-pickers out of his own pocket, it was agreed that he should be reimbursed. What a splendid example of community action. Thanks to all involved. It is my personal view that local issues taken remotely pay insufficient regard to local communities. Firstly, in order to fit in with nationally determined numbers for Council Electoral Wards, the Boundary Commission has decreed that Wroxall be divorced from Godshill and ‘married’ into a new ward - Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch. Secondly the Isle of Wight has been set a house-building target of some 9000 new homes. This has obvious implications for Wroxall. Failure to comply could result in the IW Council losing its planning powers. Once again, we are potentially victims of the ‘Numbers Game’ so beloved of unelected bureaucrats. Am I alone in hearing alarm-bells ring for democracy?

Further to a letter from Bob Seely, our M.P., outlining his ideas for action, it was the suggested that the Parish Council hosts a public meeting attended by him. In the meantime I’d urge you to make your views known on our MP’s website (bobseely.org.uk) where, under the heading ‘Island Plan Survey’, you’ll find, and be able to fill in, his petition to the Government, making the Island a special case, demonstrating that we cannot fulfil their housing targets. Bob also has a survey on the Island’s housing needs, which is very easy to complete on-line. Nationally there are many derelict sites and disused buildings, many in public ownership. It’s my view that not a single blade of grass is dug up for housing until all of these sites have been used. Even Wroxall has its share of derelict sites, one of which is an embarrassing eye-sore.

IW Councillor Rodney Downer Dear Residents, on inspection by the tree officer it was requested to remove an ash tree that was suffering from ash die back. The tree was situated at the back of St John’s terrace on the path, it has now been removed. Along the old railway line, a branch had been snapped off a tree and was wedged in its canopy, at my request Island Roads dealt with this matter.

The potholes in Castle Road have been filled in but I will keep an eye to see when any more develop as they surely will. A resident contacted me about the road condition at the top of Clarence Road. A section has been marked off but there is some more poor surface further up, there are utility covers that are rattling and these have been requested to be dealt with. A group of residents have been litter picking in the village. As Island Roads only let people have litter pickers for a week at a time a batch were purchased. I would like to extend thanks to these residents for their help in keeping our village tidy. The bank near the bus stop opposite Appuldurcombe Road is overgrown again and I have requested that the Council cut it back. As reported in last month’s Way I have provided some literature regarding riparian rights and responsibilities. This gives bullet points on the subject and will be on the Parish Council notice board. The Environment Agency also has a booklet called living on the edge which contains more detailed information. It is on the Environment Agency website and is thirty-seven pages long available in PDF format. Please do not hesitate to contact me on 854203 or [email protected] Kind regards Rodney Downer.
