The Weapon Systems Of The Marine Corps

M16A4 Rifle

The M16A4 is the basic weapon system of the United States Marine Corps. During basic training you get the version with iron sights (for now at least). When you get to Marine Combat Training (MCT), you get the upgraded version with the Trijicon ACOG and the laser infrared sight. This weapon system has served the Marine Corps since 1963. Since then it has had a few upgrades, including a

chrome-lined barrel. This rifle fires the .223/5.56 round. M16A4

M203 The M203 weapon system is an M16A4 with a 40mm grenade

launcher attached to it. It has a 160 yard effective range and is used in a variety of situations. The M203 attachment begun being used

in 1969.

M9 – 9mm Pistol Honestly, I hate this pistol. I’ve seen it fail too many times under stressful

circumstances like sand, water, cold weather, etc. In my opinion, the Glock 17 would be a much better service pistol for the Marine Corps. The M9 is also

known as the Beretta 92, and runs around $595. This is another reason that the change to the Glock would be good. You can buy a Glock for around $475 brand new and they will shoot in any weather, dirty, wet and even broken… it will still

fire.

M249 LMG The M249, also referred to as the SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)

fires the same .223/5.56 round as the M16A4, but with a much heavier rate of fire (1,000 rpm). This weapon system comes with

multiple barrels that must be changed while shooting to reduce the risk of the barrel malfunctioning. This is a belt-fed or canister-fed

system.

M240B (Bravo) The M240B is very similar to the M249 in design, only

it fires a much heavier round (.308). The .308 round travels further than the 5.56, penetrates better and in

easy terms… does more damage.

M67 Frag Grenade Weapon of choice for clearing rooms where known

hostiles are suspected to be. The M67 has a kill radius of 5 meters and an injury radius of 15 meters. They are

small, easy to carry and very easy to use.

AT4 – Anti-Tank Rocket This is the basic rocket system of the Marine

Corps. It is used to defeat tanks, bunkers, vehicles, fortified structures and anything

else that might need to be blown up.

Ka-Bar Knife This knife has served the Marine Corps since before the Vietnam War, and many people to this day still carry newer versions of the leather-handled one. While it

is a good knife, I personally prefer the Gerber ASEK, a Columbia River or a custom made knife from Blackhawk or Stryker. The Ka-Bar has been put through some tests and it faired well, but not well enough to be worthy of being called the

Marine Corps signature knife. It breaks the first rule in knives and is not a full-tang blade.

Barrett .50 Sniper Rifle There are about 3 different versions of this rifle in use (that I know

of), but they all fire in the effective range of just over one mile. This rifle has changed the battlefield, and allows Marine Snipers to take out high value targets from a distance beyond being able to be

located once the shot is fired. This rifle weighs in at 30.9 lbs.

The Weapon Systems Of The Marine Corps

.50 BMG This weapon system is typically mounted on vehicles,

tanks and other armored vehicles. Try lugging this around in battle and you’ll never make it. It weighs

hundreds of pounds when chambered and ready to fire.

M27 Information Coming Soon! Research is being done.

This is a new weapon system as has just recently been introduced for field use/testing. It is still unclear what, if any, weapon system this will replace. It is a full-auto

weapon made by H&K.
