What was the Holocaust?
This was called the Holocaust, a word meaning “widespread destruction.”
Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933.
Persecution
Hitler’s Nazi party had a hatred for Jewish people.
It is difficult to pick out one trigger for Hitler’s hatred of the Jews.
Hitler blamed the Jewish people for loosing WWI. He thought they were weak and inferior.
The Nazi’s passed new laws to limit the rights of Jews in Germany.
Phase One
Jews were no longer allowed in public places such as movie theatres and sports stadiums.
Signs saying “Jews Unwelcome” were hung in stores windows.
Jewish-owned stores were boycotted by non-Jewish Germans.
The sign says, “German’s!
Defend Yourselves!”
Nazi’s forced all of the Jewish people into one area of town.
This area was called a ghetto and was fenced in with barbed wire and guarded.
There was little food, water, or medicine available. It was very crowded and dirty.
Phase Two
Jews were put on trains to concentration camps.
Phase Three
People who were sent to concentration camps had very little chance of surviving.
Many people were murdered right away. Others were forced to work as slave laborers until they died of hunger or disease.
Allied forces found the concentration camps as they invaded Europe in 1945.
Rescued by the Allies
“They were dirty, starved skeletons with tattered clothes…It is unbelievable how any human can treat others as they were treated.”

A Jewish girl named Anne Frank was living in the Netherlands when WWII.

In 1942 German soldiers started arresting Jews in the Netherlands and sending them to concentration camps.
How could Anne and her family escape?
Anne and her family were prepared. They had built a secret hiding place above Anne’s father’s office.

Anne was 13 years old when she and her family moved into the hiding place.
In her diary, she described what it was like to share this small space with 7 other people.

German police found Anne’s hiding place in 1944. Anne and her family were arrested.
Anne Frank’s Diary
She died in a concentration camp in Germany just two months before the end of the war.
Anne Frank’s diary was later found in the family’s hiding place. It had become one of the most famous accounts of life under Nazi rule.
