There’s a story about compassionate response that I’d like to share with you.

The boy asked the woman, “Are you God’s wife?” The woman hesitated for a moment, not sure what to answer. Then she said, No, I’m just one of his childrenThe boy said, “Well I knew you must be some kin to him.”

On Sunday, we will look at how God’s compassion has touched each of our lives.

Set Apart and Changed by Relationship By Robin Denney

I watched an excellent movie this week: Invictus. It is a true story about how the white national rugby team of South Africa is set apart just after apartheid. The team manages to overcome their own deep-seated racism and moves from being a symbol of oppression to become a symbol of reconciliation and greatness for the whole nation. Relationships transform this team. Their captain leads by example and leads them into situations that change them as a team rather than just telling them to change. Nelson Mandela brings this angry team under his wing by showing them deep respect and believing in them. Finally the team develops relationships with impoverished black children in the townships and through time spent teaching rugby clinics, relationships are built with the children, and they are no longer able to see the children as “the other”. We too are called by God into relationships with an open heart, ready to be changed.

This Bible study is based on a synoptic and chronological study of the four Gospels. Together we will study and learn from the Jesus’ life and ministry and learn more about being disciples.

Set Apart to Love Others as Jesus Loves Us By The Rev. Rick Matters

The lesson from Galatians (1:11-24) clearly demonstrates how Paul understood that he was set apart. God set Paul apart for the purpose of building up the same Church he was previously trying to destroy.

In the same way but much less dramatically, you and I are being set aside for the sake of building up God’s kingdom. God sets us in the middle of the world, but sets us apart from the violence and consumer values that are so common in the world.

We are set apart in order to live a holy life. The holiness of our life is not perfection, but is measured by love. As we participate in God’s love (i.e., live in the power of the Spirit), we become an example for others. We practice sainthood in order to inspire others to become saints. Our calling is to know that God is setting us apart for the holy work of loving others as Jesus loves us.

“Many Cultures, Many Nations, All Children of God” is the theme for the 2013 Friends of Epiphany Dinner.

Telling Someone You AdmireBy The Rev. Rick Matters

At the 10:30 liturgy today we will baptize Leontine Britton Turner. At this joyful celebration we witness God setting Leontine apart through the water of baptism. Being set apart for the sake of the Gospel makes Leontine a saint. Her baptism reminds us that we, too, are saints.

The fact that Leontine is one year old makes it abundantly clear that being sainted is a gift from God. Her parents decide for Leontine, and she can confirm her baptism later. We have the opportunity of confirming our sainthood each day by striving to live in the power of the Spirit, rather than by our own wills. We do not give up having a will, but we seek to align ours to that of Jesus Christ.

The name of our parish also reminds us that we are already saints. We are set apart for the purpose of making saints not only through baptism, but primarily by demonstrating in word and deed that God loves others with the passion of the cross and the joy of the resurrection.

Set Apart for the Kingdom By Robin Denney

I recently went on a pilgrimage with other young adults from the diocese to the Oglala Sioux Nation in South Dakota. Six hundred pilgrims gathered with six monks from Taize, to be hosted by the Lakota people for three days of prayer and reconciliation. It was a time to be set apart from the world and inspired. I learned of the oppression of the Oglala Sioux: from the massacre at Wounded Knee, to the practice bombing of the reservation during WWII, to the present day efforts to seize their land for oil exploration. Theirs is the poorest county in the US with the worst life expectancy (48 for men, 52 for women). Yet despite all this, I discovered a people full of hope and faith, who threw open their arms in hospitality and trust to outsiders they could have considered enemies. As we prayed together, sat in silence together, danced together, wept together, and learned together, it was a glimpse into the Kingdom of God.
