This Art Competition, which features the work of students from all the Jewish schools in Melbourne as well as some of the other independent schools, is a wonderful showcase for the talents of our future artists. The judges’ report this year commented on the extremely high standard of the award winners’ artworks, which was demonstrated by the technical skills, creative concepts, and originality of these art pieces. Art work entered by King David students did remarkably well this year, with students from both the Middle and Senior campuses achieving a total of ten awards, including one age category where KDS students were awarded first, second and third places. King David VCE student Shana Watson was awarded the major prize, $1000.00 Bencjon Rozencwajg Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded to the student whose work demonstrated the most potential. Year 3 visit toThe Jewish MUSEUMAs part of the Jewish Studies curriculum, the Year 3 students recently went on an enlightening excursion to the Jewish Museum of Australia. The students explored four areas:
• The artistry and poetry of the Hebrew alphabet created by a French contemporary artist Marc Lopez Bernal.
• Aleph Bet Yoga fun using body movements to create letters whilst singing an Aleph Bet song.
• As a prelude to Rosh Hashanah, the students looked at symbols connected to various Chaggim celebrated this year.
• Playing activities with the Hebrew alphabet featuring colourful and interesting objects.

On Friday 17 August, the Year 7 and 8 Enrichment students visited ‘The Wonders of Mesopotamia’ exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.
This excursion ties in with the Enrichment topic for this term on Ancient Mesopotamia. Students have been studying and investigating the reasons why Mesopotamia is considered the cradle of civilisation. This excursion afforded them the opportunity to explore the ancient city states of Sumer, Assyria and Babylonia. They were also able to collect information and gain additional knowledge to add to their research projects. The exhibition was awe-inspiring and students had a fantastic time.

Ancient Wonders
Year 4 students were incredibly fortunate to be visited last week by author Goldie Alexander.
Ms. Alexander is the author of the book ‘Surviving Sydney Cove’ which the students have been studying in their English classes.
Ms. Alexander explained her process of writing and how she came up with the personalities for her characters. The students were particularly excited to have Ms. Alexander sign their books.

Last Friday, The King David School hosted a group of 6 students, 3 teachers and one parent from Glen Iris Primary School. They spent the afternoon learning how to build and program a LEGO NXT robot in preparation for the Victorian FIRST LEGO League Championship which will be hosted by KDS (for the first time) on Sunday 2nd December at the Rebecca Magid Centre.
It was a chance for the fledgling Glen Iris team to learn from two of The King David School’s experienced LEGO Robotics practitioners in Gabi Abrahams and Sasha Goldenberg.
The Glen Iris team were very appreciative of the assistance and resources provided, and KDS will continue to provide mentoring support to the team in the lead up to the Victorian tournament later this year. KDS is very proud to be recognised by the FIRST organisation as an inspirational leader in robotics within the Victorian community.

On 16 August, Vanessa (Mr Black’s wife), came to talk to the Year 3’s about the brain. She is a Brain Scientist.
Vanessa showed us slides of a healthy and an unhealthy brain. The healthy brain belonged to a 75 year old person and the unhealthy brain belonged to an 85 year old.

We also learnt about our short and long term memory and we completed a fun memory test. She read some words aloud and we had to write down what we had remembered. Then we did a dot to dot activity using our pre-frontal cortex. This was quite challenging and very enjoyable.

The students of The King David School have shown overwhelming support for the ongoing charity mobile phone collection.
Noah, Hannah, Sonny and Joshua are displaying almost 100 phones which have been collected so far to assist a variety of organisations. One of the nominated charities is Gorillas Facing Extinction - which is organised by Zoos Victoria.
Did you know that each time your phone rings, a tiny piece of metallic ore named Coltan from Africa is making the call possible? Natural habitats are being destroyed in the search for Coltan. By donating your mobile phone you are lessening the demand for mining by returning the coltan coated capacitor for a second life.
Please continue to donate old phones. We will continue to send them on to a range of worthy causes.

Students at Magid were only too happy to discard their school uniforms in favour of a denim uniform on Friday 3 August. Everyone on campus joined in to raise much needed funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Posters like the one displayed were on view around the School to remind students of this important annual event.
A total of $276 was collected by the homerooms which brings the running total of money raised for charity to $2000 so far this year.

Year 4 students certainly pulled together for a Charity bakes sale on Friday 17 August.
The team of fundraisers sold items from tables on the verandah and also went round the School selling items on trays to students and staff.
The students requested that the money they collected be donated to the Byron Bay Hospital in NSW. Staff there were delighted to hear of their unexpected donation.
A hospital spokesperson said that the donation would be put towards a Slit Lamp for examining eyes in the Emergency Room.
Congratulations to all the students who worked so hard and to everyone who purchased items on the day.

SolutionIf the first worker worked for n days, he has to receive n dollars per day, so n x n = n2 dollars in total. The second worker worked for (n –1) days and he received (n + 1) dollars per day, so (n – 1) x (n + 1) = n2 – 1 dollars in total. So, the first worker has one dollar more in total.

His uncle has sent the following information:
‘My little 4 ½ year old nephew has been diagnosed with Leukemia (JMML). He has been in intensive care in Melbourne for the past week with a 24x7 hour monitoring nurse by his side. We’ve been told that a blood stem cell or marrow transplant is the only chance of saving his life and that there is up to a 98% chance he will survive with the transplant. In 95% of cases the transplant can be as simple as a blood donation similar to what is given at a blood bank.’
Finding a match is extremely difficult. The only chance of a match is from someone from his own ethnic background, i.e. someone from the Jewish community. This is now urgent so if you or anyone you know between the ages of 18 and 45 would consider helping to save his life by taking a blood test in our quest to find a matching donor, not only could you save his life but our words would not be able to convey our gratitude and appreciation.

Fresh from their sell-out season of Avenue Q, JYM theatre co. is delighted to present its inaugural play season. Staging Marvin Chernoff’s charming comedy, Chaim’s Love Song in September, JYM is excited to be tackling a new style of show.
JYM provides a connection to the Jewish community for many of its members and provides a unique opportunity for individuals who, for religious reasons, may not be able to participate in mainstream companies.
Chaim’s Love Song is a poignant, heart-warming comedy about laughter and tragedy, the power of memory and our search for love and meaning. When an elderly Jewish man meets a young Gentile woman sitting on his park bench, an unlikely friendship blooms from awkward beginnings. The show is overflowing with Jewish humour and philosophy, wrapped around the spirit of survival at the heart of our community.
Experienced director Brendan Cohen returns to JYM for Chaim’s Love Song. Brendan is “delighted to return to the intimacy of a well-crafted play full of laughter and emotion.” Having directed three of JYM’s previous productions, he is excited to be joining JYM on their first non-musical experience.
The show also boasts King David ex-collegian talent with cast member Paula Kofmansky. Paula is delighted to be returning to the JYM family to perform the role of Chaim’s daughter Rachel.
